This document provides guidelines for students to follow for their first documented essay assignment. It outlines the formatting requirements, including page length of 5-8 pages excluding the works cited page. Students must use at least seven credible sources, including academic sources other than just websites, and cite them using MLA style. An optional draft can be submitted by October 25th for feedback, or students can just submit the final version which is due November 29th. All group members must be present to submit the final essay and do a peer evaluation of each other's contributions.

Follow the instructions under “Format and Guidelines for Papers” in our syllabus. Write all of your group members’ full names in alphabetical order in the upper left-hand corner of the first page. For the type of paper, write “Fairy Tale Essay.” Create an original title for your essay. Do not make a separate title page for your essay. Your essay should begin below its title on the first page.
PAGE LIMIT: Your first documented essay should be 5 to 8 pages long (roughly 1500-2000 words). This page count should not include the page(s) containing your list of Works Cited.
SOURCES AND LIST OF WORKS CITED:
Use at least seven credible sources to support your arguments, opinions, and ideas in both essays. Do not consult only websites. You should also consult and cite some academic journal articles, books, and other types of sources. Do not cite Wikipedia because it is not always reliable (although you may consult it initially). Use the MLA 2016 (8th ed.) documentation style for citing your sources. Be sure to read the pdf “2016 MLA Guidelines” which I will post in our FB group soon.
FIRST DRAFT AND REVISION (OPTIONAL):
If you wish, you may submit a complete or partial draft of your essay on or before Friday, October 25, 2019. It should be a hard copy only. Submit it to me in person during any of our class periods on/before Oct. 25. Do not submit it to the English Dept. because student papers submitted there sometimes get misplaced. If you submit your draft on Oct. 25, I will return it with my comments on November 06 or 08. Also note that the earlier you submit your draft, the sooner I will be able to read it and return it to you, and the more time you will have to revise it. If you decide not to submit a draft of your essay, then I will read only the final version of your essay which is due on Nov. 29 (see below).
SUBMISSION OF FINAL VERSION:
Submit a hard copy of the final version of your first documented essay on Friday, November 29, 2019, during our class period. Bring it to our classroom. I will not accept essays sent by e-mail. You and your groupmates must all be present when you submit your essay. You will each be required to describe your contributions to the work on your essay and to evaluate your groupmates’ work. This will be done orally, not in writing. If you are absent or arrive very late, and thus fail to participate in your group’s peer evaluation, you will receive a .50 deduction on the grade of your first documented essay. You should arrive at, or within 10 minutes of, the beginning of our class period on Nov. 29. If all the other groups have finished their peer evaluations and you have not yet arrived, I will proceed with your group’s peer evaluation and then leave the classroom. I will not spend the rest of the period waiting for you to arrive. You will be marked absent and will receive the .50 deduction mentioned above. 2
