CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

Education nowadays has become prominent things as it involves most people to take part

in this matter. It is one of the imperative aspects that not only inculcates the essential skills, abilities and

knowledge among the individuals but also lead to overall growth and progress of the individuals, community

and nation as a whole. The inculcation of academic knowledge, skills, abilities and proficiency among the

individuals is enhanced through learning in academic performance. Academic performance is determined by

examination grades at the end of a particular term, semester of programme.

According to Official Gazette (2016) Senior High School is year of specialized upper

secondary education. Students may choose a specialized based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. In

olden days, parents did not involve more in the studies of their children, but the trending world today

demands more in the studies of their children.

According to Garcia and Thornton (2014:1) current research shows that the involvement of

family in learning helps to improve students’ performance, reduce absenteeism and restore parent’s

confidence in their children education. Parental involvement is included in the list of multiple factors that

influence students access (Jeynes, 2015).

The more parental involvement, the more students are likely to become productive

members of society as well as excel in academics. In additional, the lack of parental involvement may lead to

difficulty in school for some children (Flores et al., 2015).

As a researcher, we specifically intend to establish the level of parental involvement and

performance. We wanted to know what are the contribution of parental involvement in studenGts’ academic

performance.
Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the impact of parental involvement in academic


performance of Senior High School student’s academic performance in Himamaylan National High School.

Specifically, this study ought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of Senior High School students in terms of the following variables?

C. Strand
D. Socio-Economic Status
2. What is the level of parental involvement among Senior High School students in terms of the following:
A. Gender
B. Age
C. Strand
D. Socio-Economic Status
3. What is the level of academic performance among Senior High School students in terms of the
following:
A. Gender
B. Age
C. Strand
D. Socio-Economic Status
4. Is there a significant difference in the level of parental involvement among Senior High School students
when group according to:
A. Gender
B. Age
C. Strand
D. Socio-Economic Status
5. Is there a significant difference in the level of academic performance among Senior High School
students when group according to:
A. Gender
B. Age
C. Strand
D. Socio-Economic Status
6. Is there a significant relationship between level of parental involvement and academic performance

Significance of the Study

This study is intended to benefit the following:

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers, they will gain best practices that encourage partnership
with parents in addition to effective support strategies. The result of this study will give educators a better
understanding of how particular kinds of parental involvement affects students’ academic performance.

Parents. This study would be beneficial to the parents which they can better support their child in the school
considering all the barriers, and build a healthy and productive relationship with the school and their child’s
teacher. The result of this study would inform the parents on the level of their influence towards their children.

Students. This study would be beneficial to the students because they would able to acquaint their parents
about the impact of parental involvement on the elevation of their academic performance. The students would
be aware on the level influence of their parent’s involvement and could possibly inspire them to do better in
school. Students will benefit overall from the collaborative efforts of both the school and the home.

Administrators. The result of this study is significant to the administrators at school and district level because it
will help identify persistent barriers of parental involvement at opportunities to overcome barriers. This study
could serve as a standard data to improve programs for school advancement.

Future Researchers. This study is significant to the future researchers for this will serve as their baseline if
they will to continue this investigatory project.

Definitions of Terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally to express the simplest meaning and to
emphasize the word as used in this study.
Parental Involvement. Refers to the activities occurring between a parent and a child or between a parent and
teachers at school that may contribute to the child’s educational outcome and development ( Seedee, 2014).

Operationally, in this study it refers to the support and guidance of the parents that enhance and positively
affects their child’s academic performance.

Academic Performance. Refers to the extend which a student, teachers, or institution has achieve their short
or long term educational goals (Heick, 2016).

Operationally, academic performance refers to the grades of the students which is affected in this study.

Senior High School. Refers to the grade 11 and 12, the last two years of the K-12 program that DepEd has
been implementing since 2012 (Montegrande, 2016).

Operationally, refers to students of Himamaylan National High School at Himamaylan City and the participants
of this study.

Scope and Delimitations

This study is delimited to determine whether parental involvement increase to academic performance of Senior
High School students.

The respondents of the study will be the 120 grade 11 and 12 students from different strands. 60 respondents
from academic track and 60 respondents from technical vocational livelihood track.

Specifically, 20 students from each strand of Accounting, Business and Management (ABM), Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). 10 students
from each track of Arts and Design, Computer programming, Hairdressing, Cookery, Shielded Metal Arc
Welding (SMAW), and the Electrical Installation Maintenance (EIM).

Summary:
In the high mountain of Negros Occidental there’s a very young lady named Rona Mahilom. She
have a five brother’s with her parents living in that mountain.
In the school, teacher spoke well of Rona. One day, her parents went to the next village which was
far from their house. Late in the evening, as the children we’re fast asleep inside their wooden hut, a cat over
turned the oil lamp and it cause fire.
Rona saved her five brothers, after saving her brothers , rona grabbed a plastic pale and ran to the
nearby stream to fetch water and returned to the burning house to put off the flame she did that several times
until she finally collapse because of the tiredness. When she woke up, Rona was in the hospital receiving
treatment for her burns. Her bravery made her very popular. The Mayor of Manila Alfredo Lim , gave her one
million pesos. Rona’s future looks bright and her dream to become a teacher someday will surely come true.
Plot:
Late in the evening, as the children we’re fast asleep inside their wooden hut, a cat over turned the
oil lamp and it cause fire. The blazing oil spilled into Rona’s bed and scattered the floor. Rona jumped up when
her shoulderlength hair got on fire. She was about to ran outside the door when she saw her brother’s still
sleeping. And she wake up her brother’s and saved them as fast as she can.
Moral Lesson:
Don’t be selfish , if you are brave enough why not save others life your relative or not you have to
save them if you can.
