Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter details out the research methodology for the present study. It

explains the research setting, design, participants, instrument used, data gathering

procedure, statistical treatment, and as well as the research protocol for the whole

research.

Research Setting

The study was conducted at Capitol University. It is a non-sectarian, co-

educational private academic institution located in Cagayan de Oro City. Capitol

University has produced several topnotchers in the licensure examination for Nurses as

well as for Teachers. Among the college institutions of the area, Capitol University is the

only school who is offering BSMT and BSME courses that were accredited by Marina.

Research Design

The study is quantitative in nature which requires understanding and opinions

from the respondents as its results. It was determined that a quantitative approach

would be the most appropriate because the studywill be interpreting the data gathered

involving numbers.

Research Participants

The data will be collected from the population ofCapitol University particularly

Pre-bacc Maritime. Slovin’s formula will be used to get the sample size needed for the

research. The study participants include150 Grade 11maritime cadets who will answer

the given survey questionnaires with a 0.05% margin of error.

a. N (total population) = 240

b. E (error tolerance) = 0.05

Sampling Method
In order to optimize the results of the study, convenience sampling was used to

seek data from the respondents. All available grade11 cadets during the distribution of

the survey questionnaires will be chosen to participate in the study.

Instruments Used

The instrument that was used in this study is a descriptive survey questionnaire

design which would allow the researchers to obtained data from the respondents. The

draft questionnaire was drawn up on the basis of the researcher's readings, previous

studies, professional literature, published and unpublished thesis relevant to the study.

Likert Scale will be used as the basis for the survey questionnaire (e.g. agree, disagree,

strongly agree, and strongly disagree). The requirements for the design of a good data

collection instrument have been considered in the preparation of the instrument.

Data Gathering Procedure

A sample of 150 Grade 11 SHS Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime Cade was selected

from population-based sample of Capitol University through convenience sampling. The

researchers looked for necessary resources that would help them in the study. They did

an intensive reading from the internet. From these, the researchers were able to

construct ideas and find some survey questionnaires related on the topic. The

researchers will ask permission from the school principal and each section’s advisers to

proceed with the distribution of the questionnaire to the cadets. The researchers will

clearly explain all the directions and items to the participants. The data gathered will be

then tallied, tabulated, analysed, and interpreted numerically in accordance to the items

found in the instruments. A packet of questionnaires will be used as the main instrument
of the study to determine the relationship and impacts of school discipline towards

academic performance of cadets. The researchers will make sure to follow all

necessary ethical guidelines in conducting a proper investigation.

Statistical Treatment

To interpret the data effectively, the data responses to the questionnaire by the

Grade 11 SHS Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime Cadets was statistically analysed with the

study data instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as mean, percentage are

considered. Field Survey (2014) and Data Field (2015) are used to tabulized the results.

Protocol

Throughout the study the researcher ensured ethics remained a top priority.

Following the methods as outlined in this chapter was paramount in ensuring the validity

and reliability of the study. In order to maintain and follow the ethical ways in conducting

a research, a letter of permission to the Principal and a consent form for the

respondents will be made. The informed letter of permission and consent form prior to

the survey is shown in Appendix A. In addition, all recorded data will be confidential.
