1 Safety instructions

This application note may only be used in combination with the relevant product manuals which contain all
safety instructions. The user is fully responsible for any application that makes use of OMICRON products.
Instructions are always characterized by a  symbol even if they are included in a safety instruction.

DANGER
Death or severe injury caused by high voltage or current if the respective
protective measures are not complied with.

 Carefully read the content of this instruction as well as the manuals of the
involved devices before taking them into operation.
 Contact OMICRON Support if you have any questions or doubts regarding
the safety or operating instructions.
 Follow the instructions listed in the manuals, especially the safety
instructions, since this is the only way to avoid danger that can occur when
working on high-voltage or high-current systems.
 Only use the involved equipment according to its intended purpose to
guarantee a safe operation.
 Existing national safety standards for accident prevention and
environmental protection may supplement the equipment’s manual.

Only experienced and competent professionals who are trained for working in high-voltage or high-current
environments may perform this application note. Additionally, the following qualifications are required:
• Authorized to work in environments of energy generation, transmission or distribution and familiar
with the approved operating practices in such environments.
• Familiar with the five safety rules.
• Good knowledge of CIBANO 500 and its accessories.

2 Using this document

This application note describes how to execute an Undervoltage Coil test using the CIBANO 500.

Reading the ANP_15001 application note alone does not release you from the duty of complying with all
national and international safety regulations relevant to working with the CIBANO 500.

3 Operator qualifications and safety standards

Working on HV devices is extremely dangerous. Measurements must be performed only by qualified, skilled
and authorized personnel. Before starting work, clearly establish the responsibilities. Personnel receiving
training, instructions, directions, or education on the measurement setup must be under constant supervision
of an experienced operator while working with the equipment.

The operator is responsible for the safety requirements during the whole test. Before performing tests using
high voltage, read the following:

• Do not perform any test without having carefully read the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

• Read in particular all safety instructions and follow them.

• Do not use the test equipment without a good connection to ground.

The measurement must comply with the relevant national and international safety standards listed below:

• EN 50191 (VDE 0104) "Erection and Operation of Electrical Equipment"

• EN 50110-1 (VDE 0105 Part 100) "Operation of Electrical Installations"

• IEEE 510 "Recommended Practices for Safety in High-Voltage and High-Power Testing"

• LAPG 1710.6 NASA "Electrical Safety"

Moreover, additional relevant laws and internal safety standards have to be followed.

Title Description
Provides information on how to use the CIBANO 500 test system and
CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual relevant safety instructions.

3.2 Safety rules

Before starting a measurement, read the safety rules in the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual and observe the
application-specific safety instructions in this application note when performing measurements to protect
yourself from high-voltage hazards.

General

Always observe the five safety rules:

• Disconnect completely.
• Secure against re-connection.
• Verify that the installation is dead.
• Carry out grounding and short-circuiting.
• Provide protection against adjacent live parts.

Caution: Never touch any terminal without a visible ground connection!

4 Introduction
The described tests are possible when using OMICRON PTM version 4.00 or above.

CIBANO 500 has an integrated stabilized power supply. An additional external supply is needed when the
undervoltage coil voltage is different from the nominal voltage for the other coils.

The undervoltage coil timing test is explained in chapter 7

Before using recommendations from the current document, operators must be trained and have read the
CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

5 Static contact resistance test

This chapter describes how to measure static contact resistance when the undervoltage coil is supplied by
CIBANO 500. When it is connected to an external power supply or mechanically blocked, the usual test
procedure, as described in the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual, can be followed.

In order to measure static contact resistance of a circuit breaker with undervoltage coil, the use of CB MC2
modules is mandatory when the undervoltage coil is supplied by CIBANO 500.

The undervoltage coil is connected to CIBANO 500’s B3 output. The continuous power supply is configured
as described in chapter 17.2.10 of the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

Figure 1: Continuous power supply in PTM status bar

Once the undervoltage coil is supplied, the normal operating mode to measure contact resistance is possible
as described in chapter 17.2.4 of the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

6 Open and close timing tests

This chapter describes how to test circuit breaker timing when the undervoltage coil is supplied by
CIBANO 500. When the coil is connected to an external power supply or mechanically blocked, the usual
test procedure, as described in the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual, can be followed.

The « Timing » test module or « Dynamic Contact Resistance » test module can both be used to analyze
timing. The « Dynamic Contact Resistance » test module can give additional interesting information for the
diagnosis of SF6 breakers or vacuum breakers.

The undervoltage coil is connected to CIBANO 500’s B3 output. The continuous power supply is configured
as described in chapter 17.2.10 of the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

Figure 2: Continuous power supply in PTM status bar

Once the undervoltage coil is supplied, the normal operating mode to measure contact resistance is possible
as described in chapter Application of the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.

7 Opening time with undervoltage coil
The « Timing » test module or « Dynamic Contact Resistance » test module can both be used to analyze
opening time with undervoltage coil.

opening coil. The close coil is connected to the B2 output. The motor can be
connected to the B4 output when it is used to charge the closing spring.

Option 2: The undervoltage coil is connected to the B3 socket. The close coil is connected to the B2 output.
The motor is connected to the B4 output and can only be controlled manually.

7.2 Settings and conditions

An OC sequence is used to measure the undervoltage coil behavior. Voltages are configured in the same
way as for a classic timing test.

7.3 Sequence setting
The undervoltage coil is supplied during 1000 ms [1]. 200 ms after the supply starts [2], the close command
is sent. 200 ms are added at the end of the sequence [3] in order to see the breaker open, because then the
undervoltage coil is no longer supplied.

Figure 5: Sequence setting

Once the settings are done, the motor must charge the closing spring and then the « Start » button can be
pressed.

Specific case: the undervoltage coil nominal voltage is different from the opening and closing coils voltage.
If the undervoltage coil nominal voltage is different from the opening and closing coils voltage, then the
supply duration must be increased (for instance 5000 ms). The breaker will be closed manually during this
time (the B2 output is then deactivated and an opening sequence is enough).

7.4 Results and calculations
7.4.1 Graphic assessment
In the « Plot » view, you display the options « Cursors & Settings » and activate the display of the opening
coil voltage.

Note

You can rename channel B-

as you wish

Figure 7: Display configuration

In the plot view, you adjust cursors C1 and C2 [1] between the end of the undervoltage coil supply (t=1 s)
and the longest binary trace (last phase to open). The result [2] can be noted in the field « Comment » [3].

7.4.2 Table assessment
The opening time with the undervoltage coil is calculated by subtracting the undervoltage coil supply time
(for example, 1000 ms) from the value read in the table.

Figure 9 Undervoltage coil time measurement. Opening time is 1107ms-1000ms=107ms.

8 Other tests
The following tests are possible with recommendations from the CIBANO 500 PTM User Manual.
