Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual
Introduction
The intention of developing a legal set-up and calibration procedure
for the 8500 indicator series is to ease the working process and to
minimize the number of errors that may occur during legal set-up
and calibration.

Therefore, the operator will be guided through the part of the

procedure that concerns the legal set-up. At any legal set-up menu
point it is possible to select only allowed values placed in a rolling
memory stack.

The best calibration results will be obtained by warming up the

scale for at least 60 min. prior to calibration!

60 min.

This manual covers different indicators in the 8500 indicator series,

with different keyboard layouts. Therefore, it is necessary to show
the different keys in this manual. The keys are separated by a “/”.
The key in front of the “/” is active on an 8564 MK-I indicator, and
the key after the “/” is active on the rest of the indicator series.

Non-ratiometric calibration
The 8500 series of indicators initially has two calibration sequences:

• Non-ratiometric calibration (NRC).

• Legal set-up and calibration.

The NRC is an internal calibration of the A/D converter on the

weighing board and, when performed, the A/D converter will
compensate for any offset errors not related to ratiometric
measurements.
The first time ever the indicator is powered up,
followed by will appear in the weight display, and
the indicator will be forced into the NRC mode. The NRC is to be
performed as described:
1. In the NRC mode the indicator shows flashing in

912475 2002-01-16 Page 3 of 30 Legal Set-up and Calib. Manual 8500 Indicator Series
Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual
the weight display.

2. Press the / (registration key). The indicator now

performs the NRC, and will be forced into legal set-up and
calibration when finished by displaying in the
weight display.

3. Proceed with the legal set-up and calibration.

The non-ratiometric calibration needs only to be done when

changing the load cell, load unit, cable length or weighing
board! This is done by typing in the password for non-
ratiometric calibration. See schematic below, and follow above
description.

Password entry

In the user menu and the password entry, there will be an

automatic time-out after 30 sec., if the keys are untouched.

Legal set-up menu points

As earlier mentioned legal set-up and calibration starts by entering

the password. Upon doing this, the indicator will respond with the
number of the first legal set-up menu point.

The meaning and function of the legal set-up menu points and the
calibration points will be explained in the following.
Changing the legal set-up menu points and/or performing a new
calibration will result in a change of the check number for the legal
set-up and calibration menu. On verified scales this will result in a
new verification of the scale.

Gravity compensation
When moving around the world, gravity changes due to change in
latitude and altitude. The gravity is highest at the poles, and lowest at
equator.

This also means that the gravity affects the weighing results from a
scale if it is calibrated at one position, and then moved to another
position.

Example: A 3 kg / 1 g scale calibrated in Aarhus, Denmark, and

then moved to Mellac, France.

912475 2002-01-16 Page 12 of 30 Legal Set-up and Calib. Manual 8500 Indicator Series
Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual

Aarhus, Denmark: Latitude = 56°, Altitude = 0 meters

Mellac, France: Latitude = 48°, Altitude = 0 meters

Moving the scale from Aarhus, Denmark, to Mellac, France, will

actually affect the result with approx. 2.2 g. The scale will then
readout 2.2 g less at maximum capacity than expected, as you move
the scale closer to equator, where the gravity is lower.

Please refer to section “How to set the scale for gravity

compensation” for a description on how to set the scale for gravity
compensation.

How to set the scale for gravity compensation

The following procedure describes what to do to set the scale for

gravity compensation.

1. First the latitude and the altitude for the calibration position
need to be provided. Then the correction factor table to find the
calibration correction factor. (Please refer to section “Correction
factor table”).
2. Set the calibration point to the found correction
factor.

Use the keys (zero-set key) or (tare key) to select

calibration point .

Use the keys / or / to change the value. If the

keys are pressed and released (< 1.5 sec.), the value will change
only with steps of 0.01.
If the key is pressed and hold (> 1.5 sec.), the value will change
with steps of 0.10.

912475 2002-01-16 Page 13 of 30 Legal Set-up and Calib. Manual 8500 Indicator Series
Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual
3. Calibrate the scale. (Please refer to section “Calibration menu
points”).

4. After the calibration, finish the legal set-up and calibration menu
(refer to section “How to finish legal set-up and calibration”),
and perform the necessary weighing tests (e.g. linearization).

5. Provide the latitude and altitude of the destination position, and

find the destination correction factor in the correction factor
table. (Please refer to section “Correction factor table”).

6. Start the legal set-up and calibration menu (refer to section

“How to start legal set-up and calibration”) and set the
calibration point to the found destination
correction factor.

7. Finish the legal set-up and calibration menu. (Please refer to

section “How to finish legal set-up and calibration”).

On the following pages you will find an example showing the

procedure for a scale that is calibrated in Aarhus, Denmark, and
moved to Mellac, France.

Calibration menu points

The calibration of the 8500 indicator series consists of two parts.

First the calibration of the minimum load, and then the calibration of
the maximum load.

Minimum load calibration:

Select minimum load calibration point . At this
point only the keys (zero-set key) and (tare key) will be
accepted.
• Pressing (tare key) decrements the menu point to
.
• Pressing (zero-set key) will start the minimum load
calibration .

1. Respond to this by emptying the goods plate.

2. Press the (zero-set key) to start registration of minimum

load.
3. The display will now show flashing bars .

4. At this point two things may happen:

• If the registration can be completed without any errors, the

indicator will respond by showing the calibration point
(maximum load calibration).
• An error code may occur. If this happens, please refer to the
section “Calibration error codes”, page 23.
Maximum load calibration:

912475 2002-01-16 Page 20 of 30 Legal Set-up and Calib. Manual 8500 Indicator Series
Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual

1. Pressing the (zero-set key) will result in displaying of the

required calibration load which normally equals the selected
maximum capacity.

2. Now place the required calibration load on the goods plate.

3. Press the (zero-set key) to start registration of maximum

load.

4. The display will now show flashing bars .

5. Like at calibration point (minimum load

calibration), two things may happen:

• If the registration is completed successfully, the indicator will

respond by showing the first calibration menu point, which is
calibration point .
• An error code may occur. If this happens, please refer to the
section “Calibration error codes”, page 23.

Legal Set-up and Calibration Manual

It is also possible to perform the maximum load calibration, using a

calibration load weighing less than maximum capacity. This
procedure is certainly not recommendable, but may be used at
very large capacities, or in an emergency situation. In any case
it is important to choose as large a calibration load as possible.

Any calibration load can be selected within certain limits:

• Calibration load cannot exceed the maximum capacity

• Calibration load cannot be below 100 divisions

.
When the display is showing the required calibration load

, it will be possible to activate the keys / or

/ and thereby decrease or increase the calibration load by 1
display division.

Keeping the keys / or / activated will result in the

following:

• The requested calibration load decreases/increases by steps of 10

display divisions.
• The decreasing/increasing will run at high speed until the button
is released.
When calibration has been finished, a weighing can be
performed. After having performed this weighing test, it will
be known to the operator if any fine calibration or
linearization is needed (normally not necessary). But if this is
a fact, the indicator will have to be put back into the
calibration mode. Please refer to "How to start legal set-up
and calibration", page 4.
By stepping down with the key (tare key) from
, it is possible to reach the calibration point
numbers , and

Calibration error codes

This section provides a listing of the error codes that can occur
during calibration.

This error code may be given during calibration at calibration points

and .

Meaning: During calibration the signal from the load

cell is too unstable.

Example: This error code is given if the goods plate

vibrates during calibration.

How to continue: Press the / (registration key).

The indicator responds by stepping back to the

current calibration point, either
or .

It will then be necessary to perform this

calibration point once more.

This error code may be given during calibration at calibration point

.

Meaning: The dynamic range is not big enough.

Examples: This error code will be given if the goods plate

is not unloaded, before minimum load
calibration, or if the pre-load is too big.

How to continue: Press the / (registration key).

The indicator steps back to calibration point

. It will then be necessary to
perform this calibration point once more.

This error code may be given during calibration at calibration point

.
Meaning: The load on the goods plate or the pre-load is
too heavy, or a hardware error has been
discovered.

How to continue: Press the / (registration key).

The indicator responds by stepping back to the

calibration point .

This error code may be given during calibration at calibration point

or .

Meaning: The load on the goods plate or the pre-load is

too light, or a hardware error has been
discovered.
How to continue: Press the / (registration key).

The indicator responds by stepping back to the

previous calibration point.

This error code may be given during calibration at calibration point

.

Meaning: The registered maximum load, incl. 5% of the

dynamic range, exceeds the permitted
maximum value.

How to continue: Press the / (registration key).

The indicator responds by stepping back to

calibration point .
Step back to calibration point
by pressing (tare key). Find out what
caused the error. Either the calibration load or
the pre-load is too heavy.

It is now necessary to perform a complete

calibration at calibration points
and once
more.

How to finish legal set-up and calibration
