The teacher discuss the definition of the arithmetic sequence then illustrate
an example of a sequence in which there is a common difference to define further
the definition  of the sequence.
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained
by adding a constant called the common difference. Common Difference is the difference
between any two consecutive terms.

A.    15, 25, 35, 45      1, 3, 5, 7, . . .

(Finite Sequence) (Infinite Sequence)

45 – 35 = 10 7–5=2
35 – 25 = 10 5–3=2
25 – 15 = 10 3–1=2
Common Difference is 10 Common Difference is 2
3. Activity
The teacher calls students randomly to identify if the following is an
example of arithmetic sequence.
1. 3, 7, 11, 15, 19
2. 4, 16, 64, 256
3. 1, 0, 1, 2, 3
4. 48, 24, 12, 6, 3, ...
5. 9.5, 7.5, 5.5, 3.5, ...

Answer:
1. Arithmetic Sequence
2. Not
3. Arithmetic Sequence
4. Not
5. Arithmetic Sequence

The teacher will illustrate the formulated formula of the arithmetic

sequence. Then, give an illustrative example of a sequence where the formulated
formula of the arithmetic sequence can be applied.

an = a1 + (n – 1)d

where:
an = nth term
a1 = first term
n = number of term from a1 to an
d = common difference
Example 1:
Find the 14th terms of the sequence 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .

Solution:  a1 = 5     n = 14      d = 2       an = ?

Substitute in the formula   an = a1 + (n – 1)d
                                      a14 = 5 + (14 – 1)2
                                            a14 = 5 + (13)2
                                            a14 =  5 + 26
                                            a14 = 31

Example 2:
In the arithmetic sequence -7, -4, -3-1, 2, ..., what term is 44

Solution:  an =  44   n = ?      d  =  3  a1 = -7

Substitute in the formula   an = a1 + (n – 1)d
                                            44 =  -7  + (n – 1)3
                                            44 =  -7  + 3n – 3
                                            44 =  -10 + 3n
                                            3n = 44 + 10
                                        3n/3  = 54/3
                                             n  =   18

Example 3:
Find the 42nd term of the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, …

Solution:  a1 = 5     n = 42      d = 5       an = ?

Substitute in the formula   an = a1 + (n – 1)d
                                      A42 = 5 + (42 – 1)5
                                            A42 = 5 + (41)5
                                            A42 =  5 + 205
                                            A42 = 210
Example 4:
Which term of the arithmetic sequence is -18, given that a1 = 7 and a2 = 2?

IV. ASSESSMENT

            Answer the following.

1. Find the 11th term of the sequence  3, 4, 5, …
2. If a1 = 5,  an = 395, and  d = 5, find the value of n.
3.
