Pacific Northwest History Offers Many

Tourist Attractions

By: Meghan Colloton

The pacific northwest is a unique place to visit. Home to national parks, mountains, bustling urban
areas and vineyards, a visit to the pacific northwest coast is perfect for a family vacation or a
romantic getaway for two. Whether you are traveling by land or planning a cruise, your next
vacation will be full of pacific northwest history, culture and outdoor fun.
Victoria, B.C.
If you find yourself in Washington, it's not difficult to make your way to British Columbia's capital
city of Victoria. This breathtaking city is a frequent stop along one of the area's many pacific
northwest cruises. Not only does Victoria offer some of the best museums and historic buildings
in Western Canada, but its mild climate provides a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Head to
Victoria's Inner Harbor, where you can tour Thunderbird Park's 15 totem poles or experience a
traditional high tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. Famed for its gardens, be sure to visit
Butchart Gardens. Visitors enjoy the colorful displays at this botanical wonder, which has survived
for over one hundred years.

When you are ready to tap your inner outdoorsman, you can run, walk or bike along the Galloping
Goose Trail. Your adventure will take you through an old railway line, where you will pass
farmland, hidden lakes and forests. Hop on a whale watching boat to catch a glimpse of Orcas in
the Pacific waters. Before you leave, visit the intriguing Fisgard Lighthouse, where you will learn
why Vancouver Island's west coast was called the "graveyard of the Pacific."

Portland, Ore.
Portland isn't your average urban oasis. The Rose City is bisected by rivers, mountains and
vineyards, which makes it the perfect pacific northwest stop for an outdoor adventure, romantic
getaway or family vacation.

Glacier National Park, Mont.

For those planning a pacific northwest vacation a little farther off the coast, Glacier National Park
in Montana is the ideal setting if you want to escape the bustling city life and vast highway
systems. Established in 1910, there are few roads within the park's 16,000 square miles of
natural landscape. You can hike through meadows sprawling with wild flowers and pass over 200
lakes, waterfalls, lush forests and about 50 glaciers. Take in the breathtaking views from Going-
To-The-Sun Road. This 52-mile highway takes you through the park, crosses the Continental
Divide at Logan Pass and crosses the towering Garden Wal
