Complex Engineering Problem
Problem Statement:
An alcoholic fuel (CnH2n+1 -OH) enters the combustion chamber of a four stroke SI engine at a
rate of 0.05 kg min-1 where it is mixed and burned with 80 % of stoichiometric air quantity that
enters the combustion chamber at 7 C as shown in figure A An analysis of the combustion gases
reveals that hydrogen in the fuel burns to H2O but only 95% of the carbon burns to CO 2 with the
remaining 5% forming CO. If the exit temperature of gases is 1500 K.
Determine
(a) The mass flow rate of air is
(b) The rate of heat transfer from the combustion chamber.

Solution:
Balanced Chemical Equation
C 2 H 5 OH +0.8 ¿

Part (a)
As 1mole of ethanol →14.042 moles of air
Molar mass of ethanol=46.048 kg
Mass of ethanol=0.05 kg
0.05
No .of moles of ethanol=n= =0.0010806
46.048
So,
59
0.0010806 mole of ethanol→ 0.0010806 ×(0.8)(4.76)( ) moles of air
16
0.0010806 mole of ethanol→ 0.0 15173 moles of air
Molar mass of Air=M =28.97 kg /mol
Hence , mass of air=ṁ air =0. 43958 kg /min

mass of air=ṁair =0. 43958 kg/min
