The Revelation (613) yousuf mahbubul Islam, PhD

Did God speak to Moses (pbuh) directly? Moses was a prophet as accepted by Judaism,
Christianity and Islam {1}. It is also accepted that God spoke to Moses directly {2}, i.e.,
without an intermediary. The Holy Scripture of Islam, the Qur’an, mentions the names of
some [10.47] of the prophets while confirming the fact that God spoke to Moses direct.
“We have sent you inspiration as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after
him; We sent inspiration to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes to
Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon and to David We gave the Psalms. Of
some Apostles We have already told you the story; of others We have not; and to
Moses God spoke direct.” [4.163 – 4.164]

The Verses are speaking to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) regarding the inspiration sent to
him and to prophets before him. The purpose of inspiration was mainly that the prophets
deliver a fundamental message [21.25] of the oneness of God and proclaim good news
and warnings [4.165] from God Almighty regarding accountability on the Day of
Judgment and what would happen afterwards. How and why did God speak to Moses
directly? To look for answers, lets pick up the story of Moses in Chapter 28 of the Qur’an
at a point just before God spoke to him.
“Now when Moses had fulfilled the term and was travelling with his family he
perceived a fire in the direction of Mount Tur. He said to his family, "Wait here; I
perceive a fire; I hope to bring you from there some information or a burning
firebrand that you may warm yourselves."” [28.29]

Moses was employed by his to be father-in-law for a period of eight to ten years [28.27].
After which one of the daughter’s was given in marriage. Verse 28.29 reports on a time
after the marriage when Moses was travelling with his family. Moses was inspired by
God to perceive a “fire” on Mount Tur. He immediately had an urge to investigate and
find more about the fire. So he left his family behind and climbed up the mountain.

28.30 “But when he came to the (Fire) a voice was heard from the right
bank of the valley from a tree in hallowed ground, "O Moses! Verily I am
Allah the Lord of the Worlds.”
What happened when Moses reached the place where he perceived the “fire”? As
nothing was burning, it was more likely something like a glowing light. At this point, God
spoke and introduced Himself! What did He say? He addressed Moses and said, I am
Allah, Lord of the Worlds! Looking for the meaning of multiple “Worlds”, Verse 34.1
declares two worlds, the current world and the world hereafter immediately following the
Day of Judgment. What did He then say subsequently?

28.31 “"Now do you throw your rod!" But when he saw it moving (of its own
accord) as if it had been a snake He turned back in retreat and retraced not
his steps, "O Moses!" (It was said) "Draw near and fear not: for you are of
those who are secure.”
Now God started to directly train Moses on what to do and say when he would stand
before Pharaoh. As the snake made him retreat in fear, God assured him that he had
nothing to fear, he was well protected.
28.32 “Move your hand into your bosom and it will come out white without
stain (or harm) and draw your hand close to your side (to guard) against
fear. Those are the two credentials from your Lord to Pharaoh and his
Chiefs: for truly they are a people rebellious and wicked.”
God trained Moses on how to demonstrate two miracles. In addition, when afraid,
bringing the hands close beside the body would help relieve fear. As God mentioned
Pharaoh and his ministers, Moses was reminded of the challenges he would face if he
returned to the palace of Pharaoh.

28.33 “He said, "O my Lord! I have slain a man among them and I fear lest
they slay me.”

28.34 “And my brother Aaron he is more eloquent in speech than I: so send

him with me as a helper to confirm (and strengthen) me; for I fear that they
may accuse me of falsehood.”
As Moses’ intention was to carry out God’s commandment, he simply sought His help in
the challenges he would face. Did God reassure Moses?

28.35 “He said, "We will certainly strengthen your arm through your brother
and invest you both with authority so they shall not be able to touch you:
with Our Signs shall you triumph you two as well as those who follow
you."”
God assured Moses that He would give both brothers strength and authority and that
Pharaoh would not be able to harm either of them.

28.36 “When Moses came to them with Our Clear Signs they said, "This is
nothing but sorcery faked up: never did we hear the like among our fathers
of old!"”
After showing the miracles, Moses mentioned that these were from the One and only
true God and that his mission was to invite Pharaoh and his ministers to turn to Him
shunning arrogance. However, Pharaoh, in his mighty arrogant style, rejected the
miracles to be fake magic and that he had not heard of any god other than himself
[26.29].

28.37 “Moses said, "My Lord knows best who it is that comes with
guidance from Him and whose End will be best in the Hereafter: certain it is
that the wrongdoers will not prosper."”
Moses was humble and said that it is only God who decides each person’s fate on the
Day of Judgment.

28.38 “Pharaoh said, "O Chiefs! No god do I know for you but myself:
therefore O Haman! Light me a (kiln to bake bricks) out of clay and build
me a lofty palace that I may mount up to the god of Moses: but as far as I
am concerned I think (Moses) is a liar!"”
Pharaoh in return arrogantly threw a challenge to Moses.

28.39 “And he was arrogant and insolent in the land beyond reason he and
his hosts: they thought that they would not have to return to Us!”
28.40 “So We seized him and his hosts and We flung them into the sea:
now behold what was the End of those who did wrong!”
