KSAT asked some local universities the following

questions and received these responses:

1. Will students living in on-campus be reimbursed for the days they’ve not
been able to spend in their dorm rooms? As well as any meals? How
many live on campus? How many are enrolled?
2. What kind of special accommodations, if any, will be made for any
foreign students who may not be able to return to their home country,
or may not have any other place to stay in San Antonio?
3. Was the plan to extend spring break and move to online instruction,
already in place or in the works?
4. Will students undergo any further screening when they’re allowed to
return to campus, or will there be any further precautions taken?

UTSA
1. The academic year is being extended so those students who did not use their on-
campus housing during spring break will still have access to it through the extended
spring term. Same with meal plans.
2. We do not currently have that situation at UTSA. However, if we did we would certainly
work closely with the student to assist in finding housing accommodations.
3. UTSA has been evaluating scenarios and options for weeks. Given the declaration of
coronavirus as a pandemic, and while students were away at spring break, it made
sense to implement this change now.
4. Students showing flu-like symptoms are being instructed to notify Student Health
Services for assistance with screening and assessment.

St. Mary’s University

1. St. Mary’s University is discouraging students from returning to campus unless
necessary to gather essential items, such as computers and study materials, until classes
resume on March 23. Food service remains operational. St. Mary’s enrolls 3,514
students. About 1,230 students live on campus. We are continuing to discuss options for
how best to handle on-campus living in light of rapidly changing information about the
new coronavirus.

2. St. Mary’s University understands that some students may not be able to return to or
remain in their permanent residence, and may be required to stay on-campus during
the extended spring break. If students need to stay on campus, they have been asked to
complete an Extended Spring Break Housing Form. The Office of Residence Life will
review each submission and notify individuals with a decision within one business day.

3. The St. Mary’s Critical Incident Response Team has been meeting daily to monitor the
rapidly evolving situation and identify necessary steps to safeguard our campus
community. St. Mary’s faculty, who uniformly deliver in-person instruction, will use the
week of March 16 to prepare for the possibility of delivering effective online instruction.
We are doing our due diligence to continue a level of educational quality we feel is
appropriate for our students while responding to issues related to the coronavirus.

4. Precautions for students include:

a. Self-reporting any international travel and, if they’ve visited countries under CDC
Levels 2 and 3 travel restrictions, undergoing a 14-day self-isolation off campus
b. Self-reporting illness if they have symptoms of the coronavirus.
The campus is also undergoing additional cleaning efforts and adapting food service,
such as removing self-service options in the cafeteria.

UIW
1. These two questions are still being considered at this time. We have 982 students living
on campus. In the Fall of 2019 there were 10,382 students enrolled globally and 8,175 in
the US.
2. International students, like all students, will be allowed to apply for exemptions in order
to remain in the residence halls.
3. Yes, a plan to conduct online classes has been a part of the conversation for several
weeks. Faculty was asked to start a “trial run” on the process during this initial Spring
Break week.
4. All students are being asked to adhere to the medical advice previously adopted and the
guidelines set out by the CDC. Those who travelled to areas directly affected by COVID-
19 are being asked to self-report travel, self-monitor and self-isolate for 14 days.
