CHAPTER III

METHODS

This chapter will provide the discussion about the research methods used by the

researchers in doing this research study. This chapter will cover the overall data in the

research paper. This chapter includes the research design, research locale, subjects of the

study, research instruments, and data analysis.

Research Design

In this section aim to discuss what kind of research design that have been used in this

research study.

The researchers used the descriptive tool as research design of their research study.

According to McCombes(2019), descriptive research design aims to accurately and

systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon. It can used in both qualitative

and quantitative researches. This research design is widely used in education, nutrition,

epidemiology, and the behavioral sciences. The most common method on descriptive

research design is the survey, which includes questionnaires, personal interviews, phone

surveys, and normative surveys.

The researchers chose descriptive design in their research study to describe the

experiences or behaviors and observations of the learners towards their experiences and

observations on earthquake drill by conducting interview, analyzing, and interpreting. The

most common method of descriptive research design has been used as a data gathering tool

or technique.
Locale of the Study

The subject of this study is from San Juan Senior High School-Stand Alone specifically the

Grade 11 students. Since the subjects was limited to ten learners, we came up with the chosen

subjects through simple random sampling. Random sampling is a method of selecting a

sample from a statistical population in such a way that every possible sample that could be

selected has a predetermined probability of being selected (Smith, 2017). This sampling

method is conducted where each member of a population has an equal chance of becoming a

research participant. In order to conduct this sampling strategy, the researchers defined the

population first. List down all the member of the population, and then selected members to

make the sample. For this purpose, the selected respondents would be going to answer the

following questions during the interview.

Research Instrument

A research made questionnaires and interviews was the tools used in this study.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers worked with the different persons who has a knowledge and skills

about earthquake drill. The researchers conducted an interview to these different people

namely: Mr. Marfori R. Garcia, a teacher of San Juan Senior High School-Stand Alone and

an officer of Philippine Red Cross La Union Chapter, Mr. Gerardo L. Hoggang, Master

Teacher II, a Mathematics Teacher and one of the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

Coordinator of San Juan Senior High School- Stand Alone, Mr. Gino Osvi Mabalot, the

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer of San Juan, La Union and the ten
selected learners of grade 11 in every strands from Academic track and Technical Vocational

and Livelihood track of San Juan Senior High School- Stand Alone.

Data Analysis

In this part, the researchers will analyze, interpret, and record the data that have been

gathered from the subjects of the research paper.

From the answers of number one that we have gathered from the subjects through

questionnaires, the most common activity of disaster preparedness that being implemented in

San Juan Senior High School- Stand Alone is earthquake drill.

From the answers that we have gathered in question number two from the subjects

through questionnaires, the most common experiences that they have been experienced

during the earthquake drill in San Juan Senior High School- Stand Alone is that many

students are not being serious during the earthquake drill and some of the subjects said that

they experienced a well-organized earthquake drill.

From the answers that we have gathered in question number three from the subjects

through questionnaires, the performance of students of San Juan Senior High School- Stand

Alone during the earthquake drill is well-organized and they performed it with a disciplined

manner. But some of the subjects said that the students were not serious during the

earthquake drill, some students were not participating and some of the students were

irresponsible.

From the answers that we have gathered in question number four from the subjects

through questionnaires, the most common benefit that learners can gain in having good
performance is that they will become proactive in terms of disaster preparedness like

earthquake drill. The subjects also said that they can protect themselves and also their family

when disaster might come. The subjects also said that they will know what to do when

disaster might come.

From the answers that we have been gathered in the follow up question from the

subjects through questionnaires, the subjects observation during the earthquake drill that need

improvement is that learners must perform the earthquake drill in proper manner and the

teachers must know their duties and responsibilities during the earthquake drill that done in

the school quarterly. The suggestions of the subjects to those problems or lacking on the

performance is that, DRR coordinators and teachers must be strict in every performance of

the school and students during Earthquake drill. With that, students will perform it in correct

manner and the performance of the school in terms of earthquake drill will become good and

excellent.

The answer of the two DRR coordinators is related to each other and also similar to

the answers of the learners regarding their observations during the earthquake drill. There

observation is that many students were not taking the drill seriously and they’re just do

whatever they wanted to do. Students were not following the proper manner on conducting

the earthquake drill.

The DRR coordinators answers about the benefits that school and the students may

gain if they do the proper manner on performing the earthquake drill is that they will become

proactive when it comes about disaster preparedness.

One of the DRR coordinator answer is the weaknesses of the students is that they are

lack on skills and knowledge about disaster preparedness. And also, the students were not

taking it seriously.

Meanwhile, the other DRR coordinator answer is that there is no weaknesses in

students when it comes to the disaster preparedness activities like earthquake drill because

they know what are they going to do.
