Slicha

English Version
The first time in my life I remember seeing a star of David was when
I was a little kid, trying to draw a star with my crayons and my father
showed me how you combine two equal triangles to build a star.
As a school kid I learned about the Shoah and how this symbol was
abused to mark jewish people and suddenly I did not dare to draw my
stars like this anymore because I felt deeply ashamed and guilty about
being a German. How could I dare to abuse this symbol for my dra-
wings. This feeling of guilt and shame never really left me. I know that
many people in my generation say we have to forget, we have to move
on.
I always said and still say if we forget, we will repeat the same horrible
things again.
Now some of you may know that and part of my family lives in Israel
and due to my beading I met people from all over the world and was
often asked (especially after making several cross designs) „Why don‘t
you make a star of David“
Somehow all my attempts failed. I don‘t know why. The angles were not
right, the parts not matching.
Two days ago, there was an assault. A german Nazi terrorist tried to at-
tack the Synagoge in Halle, a city in central Germany on Yom Kippur. If
there would not have been a stable and resisting door, that he could not
break with his shotguns and self made grenades, probably 70 or more
jewish people, who were fasting and praying in their Synagoge would
have been the victims of a massacre!
He shot two people on the street instead, random victims, later he was
captured by the police.
in the last years it became more and more suitable for certain populists
in certain right extremist parties, to use the language of Hitler, Goebbels
and other Nazis.
Words that I only knew from history lessons suddenly seemed to be pre-
sentable again. Words I thought no german politician would ever dare
to use in public again.

Those words are the seeds for terrorists like him!
I was shocked, wanted to cry, felt helpless... and as for so many among
you, the beads are my therapy and my language. So this morning I sat
down and beaded this star. As if there was never another pattern than
this in my head. It grew right out of my hands, just like the two triangles
my daddy showed me as a kid.
I called this star „Slicha“ which means forgiveness. Because that‘s the
only thing I can ask for. Slicha, but never forget!

And yet I hope you like this star and enjoy making one

Supplies
216 firepolished beads 2mm
6g seed beads size 11°, color A (11A)
6g seed beads size 11°, color B (11B)
Beading thread: Miyuki Beading thread/ oneG
Beading needle size 11

This pattern requires knowledge in CRAW

Step 1
String six 11A and make a ring by passing again through the first bead.
Do not reinforce as we need a rather loose ring.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 3

Step 2
String one 11B and pass through the following 11A. Repeat 5 more
times. Exit from the first 11B added in this step.

Step 3
We will make one round in Double RAW. Therefor
string four 11A and pass again through the 11B you
exited from. Weave forward into the first 11A added
in this step.

Step 4
String one 11B and pass through the following
11A. Repeat 2 more times. Then weave through
the following 11B, A, B of the base ring.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 4

Step 5
For the second unit we string again
four 11A, pass again trough the 11B
we exited from and from there into the
first new 11A. Add one 11B in the first
two gaps, in the third one, pass through
the 11B of the previous unit instead of
adding a new one. Then weave through
the last new 11A and from there
through the following 11B, A, B of the
base ring. Repeat 3 more times for the
following three units..

Step 6
For the last unit we string again four 11A, pass again trough the 11B
we exited from and from there into the first new 11A. From there pass
through the side 11B of the very first unit in the round, then into the
next 11A of the new unit, add one 11B in the next gap and pass through
the 11 B of the previous unit to join as you did in the previous units.
Weave into the last 11A of theactual unit to finish the step.

Step 7
Exit from one 11B at the upper edge. String six 11A and pass again
through the 11B you exited from. AGAIN MAKE A RATHER LOOSE
RING. Weave into the first 11A of the ring and from there through the
following 11B at the top round. From there weave into the next 11A of
the actual round. Proceed in this way unitl you finish the round, then
pull the thread tight to snuggle up the beads.

Step 8
We continue from the four 11A of one DRAW unit on the side of our
element. Here we make one CRAW unit with 11B at the sides and 11A at
the top (see drawing below).

Add three more CRAW units on top of

the first one made in the same way.
We have a strip of 4 CRAW units in
total now.

Step 9
Weave along the long line of that CRAW strip and add 3 times one fire-
polished bead in the gaps between the 11B. Repeat on all four sides of
the strip. In the end, exit from one 11A at the end of the CRAW strip.

Step 10
Weave once in a circle through the
four 11A and then again, this time
adding one 1B after each of them.

Step 11
In this step we create the starting round of the next corner unit by start-
ing from one 11B of the last step and stringing six 11A. Make sure your
new ring is in the same angle like the first one as shown in the picture
below. Pass again through the 11B you exited from and from there into
the first new 11A. The end of the CRAW strip is already the first DRAW
unit of your actual ring.

Step 12
As in step 2 we add the 11B into the following 5 positions in the ring. In
the end, exit from the first 11B added in this step.

Step 13
Repeat the steps 5 to 7 from here to
complete the second corner unit.

Step 14
Counting from the CRAW bridge to the first
corner unit, skip one DRAW unit on your
actual corner and make a second CRAW strip
as shown from step 8.

Continue in this way and

make one last strip of three
CRAW units after the sixth
corner unit. Zip this strip
with another CRAW unit to
the very first corner unit to
close the hexagon.

Then fill the gaps of this last strip with
firepolished beads.

Step 14
We now create the triangles of the star. Therefor start from one DRAW
unit that is next to one CRAW strip. Add one CRAW strip with firepo-
lished beads as shown in steps 8 through 10 and also add the four 11B
at the end of the strip. Exit from the 11B as indicated in the right picture
below.

Step 15
Starting from this 11B we string four 11A
and pass again through the 11B we exited
from.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 9

Step 16
These four 11A are the foor of your next
CRAW strip but notice that you have to con-
tinue from their underside as your strip as to
continue back to he base. Make three CRAW
units and zip them with a 4th unit to the mat-
ching DRAW unit of the following corner.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 10

Step 16
We add the firepolished beads now. This
will only happen on three edges, so we
exit from the top of the last CRAW stri-
pAdd the missing three 11B in between
the four 11A at the starting point of your
CRAW strip.

Step 17
Between the 11B left and right at the tip of the triangle (see red arrows
in the drawing above) we make a bridge of two DRAW units. Exit from
one of the two 11B and string four 11A. Pass again through the 11B you
exited from, then add one 11B in each gap between the 11A. exit from
the second new 11B. String again four 11A, then
add one 11B in the first gap, weave through the next
11A, pass through the other 11B (to join the bridge),
weave through the next 11A and add one 11B in the
third gap. Pass through the last 11A to finish. See
pictures on the following page.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 11

Step 18
To shape the tip of the star, we will weave along the four 11B at the front
(two side beads of your DRAW bridge and two side beads of the tips of
the CRAW Strips). In the left and right position and in the lower positi-
on we will add one 11A. In the top position though, we join the two 11B
by passing from the one into the next. Pull the thread tight. eventually
reinforce to snuggle up the beads. Then pass again through the round
and add one 11B in the top position to create a pointy end.

Slicha by Sabine Lippert (2019) 12

Step 19
Now we repeat the step on the
back. Finally we fill the gaps of the
4th edge of your second CRAW
strip with three more firepolished
beads. This brings us also back to
the base.

Repeat from step 14 to make the

other tips of the star.

Enjoy the beading!
