‘’Basic warped square tutorial’’

Instructions by
Bev at Il Mio Jewellery and Crafts
There are several good videos on youtube to show how to make a warped square as it has been
around for quite some time. It is formed the same as a normal square, with 4 central beads, but as
two different types/shapes of bead are used it causes the square to warp. This results in a natural
bend so that a triangle can be formed. As a triangle, it can make a wonderful bail as it can be made
as big or as small as you need and also, with careful planning, various patterns can be formed to
match your work.
You will need size 11 seed beads and size 11 Miyuki beads.
For this tutorial with a square consisting of 9 rounds I have used:
124 x Size 11 Delicas
56 x Size 11 Miyuki seed beads:

Round 1: Start by threading on 4 delicas (red dots in the

photo opposite). Leave approx 5 inches for the tail so that
you can sew this in later.
Join these into a circle with a couple of knots.
Take your thread through all 4 delicas to strengthen the
circle.
Round 2: Now add 2 delicas to your thread and take your
thread through the next delica. Make sure they sit like a V
shape. Thread on two more and take through the next delica.
Continue adding to the remaining two delicas (purple dots in
the photo). After placing your last pair, take your thread up
through the first delica of the first pair you added. This is
‘stepping up’.
The photo is after completing round 2 and the thread is in the
correct position.

Round 3: Add 2 seed beads to your thread and take the

thread down the second delica of this first pair. Now add one
delica between the two delicas along the side. Now add 2
seed beads and repeat for the rest of this round (green dots
in the photo).
Step up so that you are between the two seed beads you first
placed. Step up to this position in each round.

As you can see, each corner now has seed beads and delicas
are used along each side. Make sure they are laying correctly.
Your square will have already started to ‘warp’ so make sure you
give a gentle tug to your thread to make sure the delicas ‘snap’
into place. They won’t like it but they will go!
Round 4: Now add two more seed beads and this time place a
delica in each of the two spaces along the side and continue all
the way around. Step up.

Continue in this way, building up your square until it is the size

you need. Delicas along each side, seed beads at each corner.

Round 5: Add 2 seed beads and then 3 delicas along the sides.
Step up.

Round 6: Add two seed beads, then 4 delicas along the sides.
Step up.

This is after round 6. You can see how the square can be
gently folded over to form a triangle.

Round 7: Add two seed beads then 5 delicas along the side.

Round 8: Add two seed beads then 6 delicas along the

sides.
Step up.

Round 9: Add two seed beads then 7 delicas along the

sides.

You can make the square as large or small as you
want by continuing to add two seed beads to the
corners and working delicas along the edges.

After you reach the size you want you can make it
pretty by adding size 15s around the edge or a
contrasting colour in the size 11 seed beads.

To use as a bail just fold over and secure through the

bottom beads.

Happy beading!
