periodic water spraying, workers to wear dust masks when necessary.

8.8 The required permit to work shall be obtained prior to commencement of

work. add: excavation authorization and confined space entry permit when
applicable.
8.9 The project safety officer is responsible along with the project / section / site
engineer for ensuring that all operations are carried out with due regard to the
safety of all project personnel and property.

9.0 PROCEDURE
9.1 Deep Excavation ( full open cut method )

9.1.1 Deep excavation or the construction of foundations .with the great

variety of excavation methods and lateral supporting systems, to come
to the most appropriate design, we have to consider, in combination ,
the local geological conditions, the environmental conditions the
available construction equipment’s and make an overall plan
accordingly
Since the foundation construction, itself a field of specialty, involves
many construction details.
9.1.2 Composite drawing is always to be available at site when conducting
survey or excavation/drilling activities.

9.1.3 Composite drawing- Cable detectors that can detect both live and dead
cable are to be used.

9.1.4 Cable detecting device-surveyor is always to physically identify the limit

of trench or cable turning point in line with design prior to any cable
laying.

9.1.5 Excavation shall be carried out in accordance with the lines, level and
profiles shown on the engineering drawings. Generally open cut
excavation will be applied.

9.1.6 Rock breakers will be used in hard Strata where Sheer teeth bucket
excavations and / or shovel loaders are inefficient.

9.1.7 Excavated material that is suitable for backfilling shall be screened

before being stockpiled in an agreed unconstructive location for later
Use.
9.1.8 Unsuitable material shall be removed and disposed from site to an
approved dumping area.

9.1.9 Excavation will be inspected daily by "Trained" persons to declare

excavation safe prior to any person entering.

9.1.10 Excavation maximum expected depth of excavations is 5 meters.

9.1.11 The Full open cut method can be further distinguished into the
slope full open cut method and the cantilever method. As figure 1
shows, the slope method does not use retaining walls or struts.
Instead , the construction site is excavated with sloped sides .since
there is no strut to obstruct excavation

9.1.12 Shoring, bracing and protection of excavation to underground services,

shall be carried out if required (to be determined as per the
specification)
USE 2.0 M
9.1.13 Excavated soil will be placed 1.50 m as a minimum away from the
Edge of excavation. Large stock piles to be removed from work area .

9.1.14 Rock breakers will be used in concrete breaking instead of jack

hammer/Hilti machine in order to ease/expedite the breaking activities in
Case of large volumes.

Existing Underground Utilities

• Look around for obvious signs of

underground services, e.g. valve covers or
patching of the road surface.
• Use Cable Avoidance Tool CAT to locate &
trace any services. Mark the ground
accordingly.
• Make sure that the person supervising excavation work has service plans and
knows how to use them. Everyone carrying out the work should know about safe
digging practices and emergency procedures.
• Prepare shop drawing detailing all known underground services

Avoiding Trench Collapse

……….

• Prevent the sides and the ends from collapsing by battering them to a safe angle or
supporting them with timber, sheeting or proprietary support systems.
• Do not go into unsupported excavations.
• Never work ahead of the support.

• Remember that even work in shallow

trenches can be dangerous. You may need to provide support if the work involves
bending or kneeling in the trench.
• Position of Cranes, set back from edge of excavations

Materials Falling into Excavations

• Do not store spoil or other materials close to the sides of excavations. The spoil may
fall into the excavation and the extra loading will make the sides more prone to
collapse.
• Make sure the edges of the excavation are protected against falling materials.
Provide toe boards where necessary.
