With the increasing scarcity of resources in terms of agricultural space and resources, food
security is becoming more of a concern especially for urban dwellers where availability of
food is become more costly. Another concern is the escalating problems of waste products
and its pollution impact. These are the basis of the smart greenhouse system of which the
basic components address the issue of food security through a self-sustaining system
specifically designed for an urban environment. The building blocks of the green house
system of recycled household items also addresses the issue of escalating waste products.

Another important component is the incorporation of compost material within the water used
for irrigation. To ensure efficiency, an automation method is designed for the motor system
that mix the compost solution and water. The irrigation system instruction is also automated
through IoT application to fit in the busy schedule of urban dwellers.

For energy optimization, an investigation is carried out to determine the light intensity
required to turn on the LED strip to facilitate photosynthesis during low light condition. The
light intensity reading data is collected and analysed to determine the condition of the LED
required to light up.

The smart greenhouse IoT system provides a solution with full use of cheap recycled material
and advance IoT approach. Urban dwellers can optimise limited space conditions to create
self-sustaining food supply with less energy usage through optimisation of light source
consumption.
