If Phil Maloney permits himself celestial glances, he man- ages to keep the stars from his eyes. The general manager and coach of the Vancouver Canucks will take what he considers within the grasp of his National Hockey League team and leave the dreams to those who sleep. “{ should sit up and pound the table and say that we're going to finish first,” he says, sitting up and pounding the table. “But I've got to be realistic.” Maloney reviews his roster; discusses the NHL schedule and the Canucks’ opposition in their newly-aligned division; looks at last season's final standings and concludes: “This is the first year since Vancouver came into the NHL that we have a realistic shot at the playoffs. This has got to put everyone in a better frame of mind.” But, as Maloney prepared to open his first training camp as coach and g.m., he was aware that four years of frus tration and defeat had left their marks. “Everybody's got roblems,”” he said. ‘All 1 ask is that they put them aside while we get on with the job of winning. When you're win: ning, all of those problems suddenly seem less significant. “AIL | ask these guys is to believe that when I do some- thing, I’m doing it because I think it will help the team. If 1 play a guy out of his normal posi- tion, it’s because | believe that's where 1 think he'll help us most.” What Maloney’ should have going for him most is the record of the Canucks after he took over as coach on January 15, 1974 Canucks managed only 25 points in 41 games prior to his appointment. But they came on to compile 34 points in 37 games for Maloney, hockey’s ‘Silver Fox’. Maloney vowed he'd get Vancouver out of last place in the Eastern Division, which he did, and in the process Canucks accumulated the best record of any NHL Vancouver team This season he not only expects Canucks to make the playoffs, which would mean finishing at least third, but to finish second in their division. Maloney has said that the only thing he will concede is the fact Chicago might finish first in the division that includes St. Louis, Minnesota, the expansion Kansas City Scouts and Vancouver In conclusion, Maloney points out: “Naturally, every time we play teams in our own division we have to consider the games as four-pointers, “But then .. . every game is so important.” | BEHIND THE SCENE 1974-75 SEASON SCHEDULE ae ere ro Wetec, oxebar 9.1074 ree ' Shey t 18a | Seer | Robert G. Kurt had a year remaining on his playing contract but at the age of 38, elected to launch a coaching career instead. fone In another eleventh-hour move, Phil Maloney snared Larry Popein from the New York Rangers’ organization and named him Western Scout. ‘Pope’ took an active part in helping Maloney on the ice during training camp and will be scouting both the pros and juniors throughout the coming season. eee Biggest surprise of the camp was goaltender Gary Smith's medical chart. He weighed in at an incredible 217 pounds . incredible because he’s been playing anywhere between 220 and 225 for the past 11 years. roars Now on the Canucks’ payroll as a full-time employee is Eastern Scout Jack MacDonald. He and John (Peanuts) O'Flaherty will work out of Toronto. And yet another new face: Pat Dunn, the Canucks’ new head trainer, Dunn worked for a year-and-a-half under Maloney with the Seattle Totems and turned down seven other offers for the Vancouver appointment. Dunn and his right-hand man, assistant Phi! Langlois, ran a flawless ship during training camp. All of the statistical information included between the covers of this 1974-75 Canuck Yearbook was compiled by play-by-play broadcaster Jim Robson of CKNW. We think you'll agree, he did a super job. 88 THE GREATEST HOCKEY NUT OF ALL BRINGS YOU GREAT HOCKEY. PLAY BY PLAY. For great Hockey, check out Jim Robson. He's nuts about the game.
