Using Library Services - Guidelines (Alumni)

Library Services is committed to providing equal access to UAL’s library services and facilities for all users. We aim to
support your research by providing a variety of learning environments and a range of facilities and services. We need
your active co-operation to ensure Library Services can deliver this aim.

We will... You will be expected to....


 provide reference access to  have studied for a year or more, or been employed for a period of one academic
Library Services. year or longer, at one of the Colleges of University of the Arts London or one of their
former constituent Colleges, and be a registered member of the Alumni Association
No access will be provided to  have no outstanding liabilities to Library Services
networked resources including  make an appointment to use Library Services and observe the conditions of that
databases appointment. Access arrangements are shown in our disability support table. You
should let us know if you have any access requirements when you arrange your visit.
 show your Alumni card when borrowing items for use in the library
 ensure all items issued to you for use within the Library have been discharged from
your record
 reimburse Library Services for any item damaged, stolen, lost or not returned
 treat all items with care and respect; material must not be defaced or marked
 provide a variety of learning  recognise that these facilities are shared with other users and be considerate of their
environments to support your needs by observing the following in the designated areas:
research o silent use only of mobile phones ie texting
o no eating, drinking (bottled water excepted) and smoking
o maintain silence
o talk quietly in the Quiet and Group Study Areas
 provide a clean and tidy  contribute to maintaining a clean and tidy environment by:
environment o clearing your study / computer space when you leave
o placing all rubbish in the bins provided
o refraining from misusing or damaging furniture or equipment
o ensuring all artwork is confined to the designated area
 provide a range of equipment to  use the photocopiers in accordance with the Copyright and Patent Act (1988) and
support your research not for commercial purposes.
N.B. Due to licensing restrictions, the viewing of DVDs/videos is not permitted and there
is no access to online resources and other computing facilities
 treat all users with respect and  treat all users and staff with respect and courtesy. Antisocial behaviour in particular
courtesy will not be tolerated, this includes:
o demeaning, abusive, indecent or offensive language or comments
o threatening behaviour, malicious verbal abuse or physical harassment
o shouting and / or use of aggressive or inappropriate gestures
o comments that discriminate on the basis of sex, race or other irrelevant
distinction
 follow health and safety  evacuate immediately on hearing the fire alarm or when asked to do so in an
regulations to ensure a safe emergency
environment is provided  show your Alumni card at the request of staff
 not lend your Alumni card to any other person; you are responsible for all materials
borrowed using your card
 take responsibility for your personal property
 notify the Alumni Relations office and Library Services of any changes of address or
lost Alumni card immediately

Library Services offers the following support for alumni:


 Guides in large print and on coloured paper, on request.
 Induction loops.
 Height adjustable tables and chairs.
 Magnifier.
 Access to photocopiers (you must comply with copyright legislation).
 Fetching items from the shelves. If you have difficulty getting any items from the shelves, library staff can
collect material for you. Please give half a day notice, if possible, so that we can make sure the material is
ready for you.
We undertake to deal fairly and courteously with all our users but in return we require that people respect what is asked of them in these
guidelines. If users of Library Services fail to abide by these, this may result in:
 Users’ behaviour or actions being reported to the Alumni Relations Office
 Users being asked to leave the premises
 Users’ Alumni membership being suspended
 Disciplinary or legal action

Security systems including CCTV are in operation. If the exit alarm sounds you are required to allow staff to check your belongings. Library Services complies
with both the Data Protection Act (1998) and the Freedom of Information Act (2000). All Library Services guidelines also comply with the existing codes of
conduct, charters, statutes, ordinances and regulations of the University of the Arts London.
