THE “STRONG” TEAM – 4 members (Grading: 10 pints, 50% team, 50% individual)

Instructions: You need to do two tasks simultaneously:

1. Build the tallest possible stable* building with two sheets of paper, using the
attached instructions. You can fold it, rip it, and bend it. But you can NOT use
any other materials. The paper is irreplaceable.
2. Build a paper airplane that can fly using only one piece of paper

YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

 The person who is reading the instructions in the team leader

 You have 15 min. to complete the project. The leader is responsible to
keep track of time. No warning will be given. BOTH PROJECTS MUST
FINISH WITHIN 15 MIN OR ALL MEMBERS WILL LOSE 10 POINTS!
 The leader is responsible to assign responsibilities & authorities (1. Design,
2. Manufacturing, 3. Inspection) to the other three members, provide
guidance, keep the team focused on the two goals simultaneously, and
manage conflicts. NO MEMBER IS ALLOWED TO DO ANYTHING OTHER
THAN HIS/HER ASSIGNED TASK AND THE PRODUCT WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTABLE IF HAS NOT PASSED ALL PHASES (DESIGN, MAUFACTURING,
INSPECTION), EVEN IF IT WORKS.
 A list of all members’ responsibilities and authorities must be provided to
the instructor, along with members’ performance score, and records of all
three phases performance data at the end of the experiment
 Team score (5 points):
o For the building exercise, the team will be evaluated based on the
building height. The tallest building gets full score, the shortest gets
2 points, and the other teams (who make it on time) will be prorated.
o For the airplane exercise, the team will be evaluated based on the
building height. The team will be evaluated based on the length of a
straight line the plain can fly. The longest path gets full score, the
shortest gets 2 points, and the other teams (who make it on time)
will be prorated.
 Individuals (5 points) will be evaluated based on leader’s assessment ONLY
 The leader will be evaluated based on his ability to manage the team.
 If your team misses the deadline, all members will miss all points

**
Stable means that the building should stand still indefinitely, as long as it is not touched and/or moved.
THE “STRONG” TEAM – Design Criteria for Tall Building
 Use ONLY TWO pieces of 8 ½ x 11 papers for the building and two other
sheets, just as support (see below)
 Build a multi-story building as shown below. Come up with a way to
connect the papers to each other without tape or glue (e.g.
Folding/puncturing, etc.)
 The team leader to design the team (roles & responsibilities), based on a
quick initial interview
 The designer to calculate all Hi & Ri parameters to maximize the height of
the building
 The builder to manufacture per design documents, AFTER design
completion
 The inspector to perform quality control AFTER manufacturing and return
to designer or builder, if flawed (depending on the root cause)

THE “STRONG” TEAM – Design Criteria for Airplane
 Right after designing the building, The Designer to come up with a design
(from personal experience or on the internet), document the design, and
then share with the builder to build it.
 The tester to QC the airplane after QC of the building, and after the builder
completes his/her work
THE “AGILE” TEAM – 4 members (Grading: 10 pints, 50% team, 50% individual)

Instructions: You need to do two tasks simultaneously:

1. Build a stable* building using sheets of paper, based on the attached

instructions. You can fold, rip, and bend the papers. But you can NOT use any
other materials.
2. Build a paper airplane that can fly using only one piece of paper
Guidelines:
 You have 15 min. to complete both projects. No warning will be given.
BOTH PROJECTS MUST FINISH WITHIN 15 MIN OR ALL MEMBERS WILL
LOSE 10 POINTS!
 Team score (5 points):
o For the building exercise, the team will be evaluated based on the
building shape (similarity to the image below) and stability.
o For the airplane exercise, the team will be evaluated based on the
building height. The team will be evaluated based on the length of a
straight line the plain can fly. The longest path gets full score, the
shortest gets 2 points, and the other teams (who make it on time)
will be prorated.
 All members to evaluate all their teammates in a sheet of paper, with no
mention if their own names, and submit to the instructor at the end of the
exercise (5 points).
 If your team misses the deadline, all members will miss all points

**
Stable means that the building should stand still indefinitely, as long as it is not touched and/or moved.
THE “AGILE” TEAM – Design Criteria for the Building
 Use ONLY TWO pieces of 8 ½ x 11 papers for the building and two other
sheets, just as support (see below)
 Build a multi-story building similar to what is shown below. Come up with a
way to connect the papers to each other without tape or glue (e.g.
Folding/puncturing, etc.)

THE “AGILE” TEAM –

Design Criteria for Airplane
 Use your imagination/experience and build an airplane that flies the
longest path
THE “INNOVA-“ TEAM – 5 members (Grading: 10 pints, 50% team, 50% individual)

Instructions: You need to do two tasks simultaneously:

1. Build the tallest possible stable* multi-story building using two sheets of paper,
using your imagination. You can fold it, rip it, and bend it. But you can NOT
use any other materials. The paper is irreplaceable.
2. Build a paper airplane that can fly using only one piece of paper
Guidelines:
 You have 15 min. to complete the project. BOTH PROJECTS MUST FINISH
WITHIN 15 MIN OR ALL MEMBERS WILL LOSE ALL 10 POINTS!
 Come up with your own team design (leadership and work distribution)
 The team will be evaluated based on the overall performance on both
exercises, observed by the instruction team’s observation.
 You will submit your work after 15 min., whether or not you manage to
complete both projects.

**
Stable means that the building should stand still indefinitely, as long as it is not touched and/or moved.
THE “COOL” Team – 5 members (Grading: 30 points, 50% team, 50% individual)

Instructions: You need to build an airplane that can fly the longest possible path,
using ONE piece of paper (no tape). You can fold it, rip it, and bend it. But you
can NOT use any other materials. The paper is irreplaceable.
 You have 15 min. to complete the project. One person must keep track of
time. No warning will be given. THE PROJECT MUST FINISH ON TIME OR
ALL MEMBERS WILL LOSE ALL 30 POINTS!
 The team (15 points) will be evaluated based on the building height. The
highest building gets full score, the shortest gets 2 points, and the other
teams (who make it on time) will be prorated.
 Everyone must make notes of teammates’ performance and provide it to
the instructor at the end of experiment. Individuals (15 points) will be
evaluated based on all peers’ assessment. Individuals’ assessment
truthfulness and fairness will impact your own grade too (If you give 25
points or more to all you WILL lose points.
THE PRODUCTIVE GROUP – 5 members (Grading: 50 points, 50% team, 50% individual)
PART 1 (25 points):
