DISCIPLINES AND IDEAS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

Activity No. 1
General Instructions:
1. Observe your immediate surrounding.
2. Identify at least one (1) social problem you have seen that you have think must be addressed by
proper authorities.
3. Make a Position Paper to the social problem that interests you.
4. The purpose of a position paper is to generate support on an issue. It describes your position on
an issue and the rational for that position and, in the same way that a research paper
incorporates supportive evidence, is based on facts that provide a solid foundation for your
argument. It is a critical examination of a position using facts and inductive reasoning, which
addresses both strengths and weaknesses of your opinion.
5. The classic position paper contains three main elements:
a. An Introduction, which identifies the issue that will be discussed and states the author’s
position on that issue.
i. Nature of the social problem
ii. The author’s position on the issue
b. The Body of the paper, which contains the central argument and can be further broken
up into three unique sections:
i. Background information
ii. Evidence supporting the author’s position
iii. A discussion of both sides of the issue, which addresses and refutes arguments that
contradict the author’s position
c. Conclusion, restating the key points and, where applicable, suggesting resolutions to
the issue.
d. References, list of any sources that were used at any point in your position paper. Use
6th Edition APA format in the In-text and reference citation.

6. Plagiarism is a form of stealing; as with other offences against the law, ignorance is no excuse.
The way to avoid plagiarism is to give credit where credit is due. If you are using someone
else’s idea, acknowledge it, even if you have changed the wording or just summarized the main
points.
7. To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use:
a. another person's idea, opinion, or theory;
b. any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings--any pieces of information--that are not common
knowledge;
c. quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words; or
d. Paraphrase of another person's spoken or written words.
8. Position Papers will be graded according to the following criteria:
a. Sufficiency – The position paper provides sufficient information - 50%
b. Accuracy – The position paper provides accurate information - 20%
c. Organization – The position paper exhibits clear and organized presentation of thought – 30%
9. Submit your position paper in the Google classroom on Monday, January 27, 2020, from 7:30 am until
5:00 pm.
