CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This research is about the study of procrastinating in punctuality in submitting or

making performance task. And if procrastinating can really have an effect and to promote

a way to avoid procrastination therefore the students, teacher and the future researcher

who are reading this will have a foundation what procrastination is. And the students,

teacher and the future researcher who are reading this will have a way to avoid the

procrastination.

Procrastination may vary in different situations and people may decide to

procrastinate in order for them to have more time for preparations and therefore they

might have a change to get better results in their performance task. And in some case

procrastination leads into the failure of the students that keeps procrastinate until he/she

forget.

Procrastination is the thief of time based on Edward Young. And yes it is for the

time we were doing this study we procrastinate for the third time until we decide to do

our performance task see no one is immune to the procrastination even the people who

done research on it and study it only the people who have the will to act on it can make

procrastination a distance memory.

According to some students procrastination is the reason why are they failing their

own subject/class. And according to scientists, they describe procrastination is the

voluntary delay of an action despite the foreseeable negative consequences. Essentially

procrastination is all about giving into the fleeting feeling of the present to avoid having

to follow through. It’s a coping mechanism that boils down to “I know I should be doing

this but I’m putting it off even though it looms in the future

According to Dr. Piers Steel, a psychologist at the University of Calgary and one

of the leading experts on procrastination in the world, the real reason why you

procrastinate is because you exhibit a lack of self control, which manifests as increased

impulsiveness.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Educational procrastination is defined as unnecessary delay for doing

assignments. Personality traits are very important in explaining procrastination. This
study aimed to investigate the structural model of academic procrastinating based on
personality traits by student’s educational motivation.

Though procrastination phenomenon has big impacts on our lives, little

research has been done on it. Milgram (1992) has done the first historical analysis
on the subject matter and argued that procrastination rises from advance societies
who require various commitments and deadlines. Ferrari et al. (1995) in their book
stated that this particular behaviour has already existed long ago, but it is only been
related to negative connotations in line with the introduction of the industrial
revolution. In the beginning, procrastination was never related to any negative
interpretation as it is viewed neutrally by the society. However, from the earlier
researches done, procrastination can be then interpreted as one of behaviour
problem.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

What are the possible reasons why students procrastinate?

What is the result of procrastination?

What will be the effect if students keep on procrastinating instead of being proactive?

HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant relationship between students that procrastinate than

students that don’t procrastinate.

Can students that procrastinate have a good or better academic performance than
students that don’t procrastinate.

Students who are identified as active procrastinators will have a positive

relationship with intrinsic motivation suggesting that these students have a greater sense
of intrinsic motivation in their studies than extrinsic motivation.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

Our main objective is to spread what is procrastinating in SHS level and how to
counter it. Our topic will be, what is the reason, the result of procrastinating in academic
performance, students that procrastinate versus students that don’t procrastinate, and boys
in BCC that procrastinate versus girls in BCC that procrastinate. We were obtaining
throughout personal interview to get the true answer and to avoid false information from
BCC not including the elementary, highschool and College Students. Our respondent will
be 40 students in every section in Grade XI STEM students in BCC. 2 to 3 weeks, it
depends on how busy our respondents and it will and it will and for us, it will be a long
term study.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Procrastination has become the most common issue that cause interference on
every student’s daily life. Students who procrastinate, usually they are unable to complete
important academic task on time and it may cause a significant distress on their academic
performance. Learning what procrastination is very helpful and beneficial to students,
teachers and readers of our study about procrastination. If they know about
procrastination, they might be able to get rid of procrastination in their daily life, but in
the end only themselves can quit procrastination. The benefit to the counsellors is that
they can plan better solutions for procrastinators when they know how to distinguish
the degree to which the procrastinators is anxious/or depressed. As for the lecturers,
this research may help them to know that some procrastinators do find meeting them
for educational purposes is not easy, so the result from this research may give the
lectures an overview to approach the matter.

Review of related literature

Procrastination is, according to Dr. Piers Steel, one of the self-regulatory

weaknesses that can't be explained until now; it's also a common and damaging trait in
this period. Steel has therefore studied the related philosophical, theoretical and
quantitative works resulting in correlation, experimental and qualitative results.

The meta-analysis of potential causes and effects of procrastination indicates that

neuroticism, rebelliousness and feeling are specifically pursuing a weak link. Steel also
said the following were strong and consistent symptoms of procrastination: task
evasiveness, task lag, self-efficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as awareness and self-
control facets, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation.

Continued procrastination research should not be delayed, particularly as its preva
lence appears to be increasing. (Steel, 2007) Milana Knezevic said that procrastination is
the
worst enemy of a student; it is a disease that eats away the productivity of the students.
An American study estimates that the signs of this behavior were shown by 70%
of student"Students are biologically and socially predisposed to postpone what we should
do todayuntil tomorrow." "In addition to the cliché, students are more impulsive in their e
arly years

Grace Shang an Koo, a columnist in the Inquirer newspaper, blogged something

about procrastination entitled as “Why do people procrastinate?”According to Koo,
procrastinating has to do with „estimation‟. Almost everyone procrastinates and there are
some more than others. She also said that people procrastinate or doing things off when
they overestimated the time they have or underestimated how long it takes to accomplish
a task.

Also, people may overestimate their abilities and motivation, expecting that things
will go smoothly without a flaw. She also mentioned that people uses all sorts of excuses
to justify their procrastination: It's either they do not know how to complete or they really
don't know what needs to be done. Sometimes, they will say that they are not in the mood
or they forget. To blame others or waiting for the right moment or for inspiration is also
one of the excuses.

Another thing that Koo expressed in the blog is that people may also think that
they can do better under pressure, waiting until the last minute, believing they can finish
on time and do other tasks. She mentioned that there is a research who said that there are
active and passive procrastinators:

The active ones are those who works under pressure and finish performance tasks
on time while on the other hand, the passive procrastinators are those who continue to
wait and delay and never get to accomplish their work. Perfectionism could also be the
cause of procrastination. “Unhealthy or neurotic
