REAL. The Story of Dr. Bucky Lab

nai010 publishers 2019 ISBN 9789462084681 Acqn 30178
Pb 22x28cm 144pp col ills £36

'REAL' is a new series of publications that investigates technology and material development to
provide architects and designers with concrete ideas for their designs. This first edition is based
on an interview by Ulrich Knaack with Marcel Bilow, aka Dr. Bucky Lab. In the Bucky Lab and the
Bucky Lab Seminars the combination of architecture and building technology is brought to a
higher level. Architecture students develop and build prototypes of their projects and do research
on how to design an innovative sustainable building. The design's materials and structural
performance are both virtually and physically tested. The results are used as feedback to
optimise the design.

Typologie 4 - The Wooden Crate

Typologie 2019 ISBN 9782490958054 Acqn 30265
Pb 21x26cm 64pp ills £22.50

Each volume of 'Typologie' is devoted to a single, ordinary object. Wooden crates are often found
at open-air markets, where they are used to transport and display fruits and vegetables. Their
design, a few slats of poplar wood stapled together, has remained unchanged for many decades.
In spite of this simple and rudimentary construction, the crate embodies resilience, balance,
lightness, and the economic use of a natural resource. Modern crates are the result of changes to
containers for food products that have evolved from rural wickerwork. With an interview between
artist Philippe Weisbecker, historian Pierre Cornu, and Jean-Luc Baley, director of a wooden
crate factory.

the heart of the book's message, and its methods for inventing can serve anyone who wishes to
get in touch with their own creative side, whether for their professional goals or as a hobby. With

Bush Masters Okinawa

World Photo Press 2019 ISBN 9784846531973 Acqn 30286
Pb 15x21cm 416pp col ills £55

The United States armed forces maintained a continuous and conspicuous presence on Okinawa
in the latter half of the 20th century, using the Japanese islands as a key staging point for the war
in Vietnam and deployments abroad. Among other local businesses, embroidery shops were
booming in the late 1960s and early '70s, producing countless hand-sketched designs that were
then transferred to flight jackets, patches, and other military memorabilia. Colourful hot rods,
pinup girls, cobras, eagles, skulls, insignias, and much more came to decorate the outerwear of
the troops stationed there or enjoying some R&R. This remarkably rich compendium has them all.

Touching Beauty
Corraini Editore 2020 ISBN 9788875708313 Acqn 30527
Pb 21x26cm 224pp col ills £46

Can we perceive, distinguish, and appreciate beauty through touch? What happens if the gaze is
no longer there, or was never there? Is the enjoyment of beauty lost forever or can we find it in
other ways? The book 'Touching Beauty. Montessori, Munari' explores these questions through
the thinking, ideas and original works of Maria Montessori and Bruno Munari, some of the most
illustrious figures in modern Italian culture. Both of them, although moving in very different fields,
posed these same questions, which now become the object of a detailed analysis and reflection
on the aesthetic value of tactility.
