Library Budgeting:
Many changes will happen over the summer due to the merge of Wheat Ridge Middle School in
which the transition or technology budget will cover. These items include the installment of
Apple TV in the purple room, the addition of 100 ChromeBooks, the installment of a ceiling
mounted projection system in the purple room, professional subject signage, and the installment
of a locking countertop at the circulation desk for iPad management.
The standard school library budget is $10/student which would put JHS's library budget at
$8,000. Funding has increased due to the addition of 7th and 8th grades to JHS's enrollment,
bringing our recommended funding to $15/student. The following recommendations are areas
for concentration for the 2015/16 school year.
1. Additional seating for relaxed reading. In the 2014/15 school year, we added
contemporary soft seating in front of the windows by the fiction section and a grouping in the
nonfiction area. One more seating group would create an attractive, inviting space for
students to work and charge iPads. $2,500.
2. Conference room furniture. The purple room was transitioned in 2014/15 to a small group
work space by adding a screen, ceiling mounted projection system, phone, computer and
printer. It has been reserved almost every day. The current tables and chairs are a miss-
match of leftover furniture from our building. We need to add a nice conference table and
comfortable, matching seating to make it a more usable space. $2,500.
3. eBooks. With our district vendor's eBook program, checking out, downloading, and turning-
in ebooks through students' 1:1 iPad devices is more efficient and user-friendly than ever
before. We need to encourage this program and expand our offerings to include high-
interest fiction, high-interest nonfiction, and unlimited license titles that support the JHS
curriculum. Some of these eTexts need to be in the Spanish language to support our high
ESL/ELL student population. $3,750.
4. Continued collection development. The JHS library is strong with high-interest fiction and
some sections of nonfiction. We need to focus in continual development of these areas and
purchase resources that can increase our titles in Spanish language (we have a high ESL/
ELL population), religions, language, arts, literature, history, and geography.
