3 Example answer
The inventor of the fictional Simpsons named the characters after members of his
own family, except for Bart (an anagram of ‘brat’), whom he based on his brother.
The parents Homer and Marge have three children: Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie.
Other characters who appear are Homer’s father, Marge’s twin sisters, neighbours,
shopkeepers and school staff.
Careless Homer, who is not a good father figure, works at a nuclear power station
while his wife looks after the children. Ten-year-old Bart, who is lazy and rebellious,
is always in trouble, especially at school. The eight-year-old Lisa is his opposite, being
academic and musical. Maggie, less often seen, sucks a dummy and rarely speaks. The
family live in a typical suburban house with their pets. Although they are always having
problems and quarrelling, they are a close family.

4 a The long-haired teenager with a pony tail, a sixteen-year-old boy, was sometimes
mistaken for a girl.

7 Try as I might, I could never catch up with my brother. And I certainly tried hard. He
was seven years ahead of me, which meant seven years of knowledge, seven years of
experience and seven years of growing that I had to do very quickly. Impossible, of
course, but it didn’t stop me trying to narrow the gap. I thought he was marvellous.
He taught me all sorts of games, and whenever I beat him I thought he had been kind
and let me win. All I wanted was to be like him.
This worshipping reached a peak when I was ten. My brother was learning to drive.
Being able to drive was the most grown-up thing imaginable to me. How I longed for
my seventeenth birthday! On my eleventh I remember thinking: ‘Only six more years
to go.’
By this time, though, my brother was on the verge of leaving home. I shall never
forget the day he went. He had always been there and now, suddenly, he was leaving
the family. I went into his bedroom, sat on his bed and cried. I cried bitterly, feeling
utterly alone and lost. I had spent eleven and a half years with constant company –
someone to play with, someone to fall out with, someone I loved. Of course, he came
home for holidays, but it was never quite the same.
