IN-SITU CONCRETE CULVERT METHOLOGY STATEMENT
In-Situ Concrete Culvert simply means that the building and installation of the concrete culverts
on or at the proposed site under the supervision of the Site Engineer/Supervisor on site upon
culvert installation site conditions. This forms of culverts will be cast on site unlike the
prefabricated culverts. Also, for reinforced concrete culvert, it means the construction of the
concrete pipe with cement and steel reinforcement on site, rather than constructing it in
factory.

This In-Situ Concrete Culvert mythology statement clarifies the procedures involved in the
installation of it.

1. Locations

According to the CWYC Surveyors and Engineers the culvert locations along the CW2
sections are being updated, scheduled and proposed for the replacement for damaged
culverts with the new concrete culvert at various locations along the Highlands Highway
from Henganofi-Mangiro/Miunde-Kagamuga.

2. Excavation

After the position of the culvert has been determined, and set out by the CWYC
Surveyors/Engineers, The excavation begins with respect to the approved design level. The
excavation will be kept free from damage free from storm water and streams.

3. Bedding and Compaction

After the excavation, CWYC will do the compaction and leveling works in order to achieve
the standard soil stability. Then fill up granular bedding material and compact then the sub-
base to such a level that will provide a minimum cover above the proposed level of the top
of the In-Situ Concrete Culvert.

4. Formwork and Concrete Slab.

After bedding and compaction, CWYC carpenters are going to erect form work along the
excavated site according to the length, width and height of the In-Situ Culvert to be
constructed. The meshwork for the concrete slab should have concrete spacer block fixed
at various varying intervals to ensure a reliable concrete cover. It is allowed to set and any
curing procedure is applied.

5. Placing

After formwork and concrete slab are complete, we are going to lay the Reinforced
Concrete Pipes (RCP) from the outlet end of the barrel with the socket ends upstream and
spigot ends downstream then end of each end is going to be butted carefully to maintain
straight barrel for jointing.

6. Jointing

When installing In-Situ Concrete Culvert, CWYC is going to use the two most recommended
joints when placing the culverts. They are expansion joints and construction joints.

7. Concreting and Curing

After joints are done, concreting shell be done to plaster the Concrete Culvert joints then it
will go under curing process for twenty one days to obtain the required strength. During the
curing process, CWYC Engineers shell be monitoring it closely. After the required curing
period of time the CWYC Engineers will inspect and test the concrete strength and
approved for backfill.

8. Backfilling and Compaction

We are going to backfill and compact after the approval for the concrete and curing are
released from CWYC Engineers and In-Situ Concrete Culvert Experts from site. The
backfilling materials to be used are granular materials free from lumps and stone of greater
size than 75mm and having at least 50% retained on 2.36mm sieve. Then compaction is
going to be every 200mm up to the road dimension.

Backfilling and compaction will be supervised by the CWYC Material Engineer, Site Engineer
and the Supervisors.

9. Safety

During the construction of the In-Situ Concrete Culvert, CWYC is going to install various
corrective road safety measures to keep the steady flow of the road users without any
disturbance on site.

The safety of the workers on site, machineries and materials is going to be closely
monitored and controlled by CWYC Safety Officer and the Site Engineer.
