SUBJECT: Diagnostic Trouble code E24 is displayed. Engine will not accelerate or only accelerates to a
mid speed range

RESOLUTION
Review the attached documents to perform pinpoint troubleshooting tests.
The same sensor is used from year 2004 - Current 2009.

Diagnostic Trouble Code E24

 WHAT can set this code? A mechanical malfunction of the


throttlebody. Any time the battery is disconnected or
throttle body has been disconnected/ replaced or the
Accelerator Sensor has been disconnected/ replaced you
must perform:
 Accelerator Released Position Learn.
 Throttle Valve Closed Position Learn.
 Idle Air Volume Learn ( TAS Fast Normal ).
 Failure to perform these learns may cause this code to set.

 Accelerator released position learn:


1) Turn key switch to the ON position and count out 2 seconds.
2) Turn the key switch OFF and count out 10 to 12 seconds.
3) Turn the key switch ON and count out 2 seconds.
4) This learn is completed. You may key off now.

 Please review the attached pinpoint tests required to
perform when the Electronic Throttle Control ( ETC )
does not respond to commands from the accelerator.
 Back probe the ETC Connector pins With key off and
with key on and engine running at idle and engine
running at 2000 rpm.
 Do not disconnect the connector at this time.

 Do not pierce the wire insulation.

 The definition of DTC E24:
 The accelerator pedal position sensor 1 output voltage
has been approximately 0.15 volts or less (OPEN) for a
predetermined amount of time.
 System has detected disconnection by short circuit or
open and turns the mil light on and sets code E24.
 Inspection:
 Use the Diagnostics program. Key on. View the
Throttle Angle and Accelerator Angle from the ECM in
the Input Monitor screen.
 Both should read 0% at idle position with an idle
speed of 695 to 725 rpms. Readings of 2% (+2%/-0%)
are acceptable. A reading of > 2% will cause a DTC E24.
 Depress the accelerator pedal against the pedal stop
bolt. Both throttle angle and accelerator angle should
be 100% ideally. Readings of 98% (+0%/-2%) are
acceptable.
 Release the pedal and both should return to 0%.

manuals.

EC61 and Page 167

The required signal voltage readings for ECM pins 106


and 98 were accidently switched. This is the correction.
All newer manuals have been corrected.

 Example: If the Throttle Angle is at 60% and the
accelerator angle is at 25% you may have a in the
accelerator position sensor circuit.

 Check the following:


 Check accelerator pedal position sensor voltage by
back probing connector of accelerator sensor with the
key switch on.
 Check signal 1 voltage at Accel. Sensor pin 5 or ECM
pin 106 .
Wire 173 Color: Red/Blue.
 Accel. Pedal released should read approx. 0.6 volts
 Accel. Pedal depressed should read approx. 4.2 volts

 Check the following:
 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 2 ,Signal 2
 This is signal voltage Accel.
 Sensor pin 2 or ECM pin 98.
Wire 174 Color : Black/White or Yellow/Red
 Accel. Pedal released should read approx. 0.3 volts
 Accel. Pedal depressed should read approx. 2.0 volts

 Check the following:


 Measure the voltage between accelerator sensor
terminals and ground with a volt meter (DVOM).
 Accel. Sensor 1 power supply
 Power supply voltage
 Accel. Sensor pin 6 or ECM pin 90.
Wire 537 Color : Green or Orange
 Idle approx.--5.0 volts
 Approx.2000 rpms --5.0 volts

 Check the following:
 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 1 ,Signal 1
 This is signal voltage
 Sensor pin 5 or ECM pin 106.
Wire 173 Color : Red/ Blue
 Idle – Approx. 0.6 volts
 Approx. 2000 rpms – 0.65 volts

 Accelerator Pedal Position sensor 1 ,sensor 1ground


 This is ground
 Accel. Sensor pin 3 or ECM pin 82.
Wire 936 Color : Black
 Idle approx.--0.0 volts
 Approx.2000 rpms -- 0.0 volts

 Check the following:
 Accelerator pedal position sensor 2 power supply
 This is power supply
 Sensor pin 4 or ECM pin 91
Wire 166 Color : Orange / Blue or White/Blue
 Idle – Approx. 2.5 volts
 Approx. 2000 rpms – 2.5volts

 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 2 ground


 This is sensor ground
 Sensor pin 1 or ECM pin 83
Wire 937 Color : Black or Black/White
 Idle – Approx. 0.0 volts
 Approx. 2000 rpms – 0.0 volts
