1. General Information Variation Calibration

The TM-42 is a transmitting magnetic compass system that

displays the heading of the ship and sends NMEA-0183
sentences, using the FLUXGATE(SF-30) to sense the magnetic
field of a magnetic compass. The primary functions of the TM-42
Step 1 : Display the start of the variation calibration
are to provide backup heading and to sends NMEA-0183

sentences. The TM-42 also has several functions, such as a
deviation calibration ,a variation calibration and dimmer function.
① Press the DEV/CAL button and hold for 2 seconds to enter the
variation calibration mode when the TM-42 display the heading.
The initial screen of the variation calibration mode will be

① Press the DEV/CAL button and hold for 2 seconds to enter the
deviation calibration mode when the TM-42 display the
heading. The initial screen of the variation calibration mode will
be displayed on the 7-segment. Press the DIM+ or DIM- button
once to switch to the deviation calibration mode. Then the
initial screen of the variation calibration mode will be displayed
on the 7-segment. <step 1>

② Press the DEV/CAL button once to jump to the <step 2>. In

the <step 2>, you could adjust and set the deviation
calibration address. This address represent the angle for the
deviation calibration, which is 36 from 0 to 350 by steps of
10. Select the address for calibration and press the DEV/CAL
button once to jump to the <step 3>.

③ In the <step 3>, you could adjust and set the deviation
calibration value. This value is set from -9.9 to 9.9 using the
DIM+ or DIM- button by steps of 0.1. And press the DEV/CAL
button once to adjust the calibration value in the other address.
If the calibration is all done, press the DEV/CAL button and
hold for 2 seconds to escape the calibration mode.

For example, if you want to correct the difference between the

magnetic compass and the TM-42 at 110°, set the address to

1. Insert and fix the TM-42 in the console or the place for install.

2. Connecting cables to the TM-42. Information on the TM-42

connections and interfaces is shown in the <Figure 1>.

5. Power On & Functional Tests

If the cable connection of the TM-42 is all done, the final test is
required as shown.

ground. 2. Input the power to the TM-42 and check the display heading is
accord with the magnetic compass.
3. Check the NMEA-0183 serial port is working properly.
3. Install the Fluxgate(SF-30) beneath the Magnetic Compass like
the Figure 2. The direction of the installation of the Fluxgate is
very important. Please install the Fluxgate with caution.
6. Troubleshooting
- 7 -
1. The "ErrF" error message is displayed on the 7-segment.
: This message caused when the cable connection between the
TM-42 and the FLUXGATE(SF-30) is not correct.
☞ Recheck the cable connection between the TM-42 and the
FLUXGATE(SF-30).
2. All LEDs and 7-segment display is off.
☞ Check the fuse or the cable connection.
3. The difference between the magnetic compass and the TM-42
is so large.
☞ Check the installation of the FLUXGATE(SF-30). Or replace
the FLUXGATE.
4. There's no NMEA output from the TM-42.
☞ Change the wiring between the DNx pin and the DPx pin.
(where x means the NMEA output channel number)
