PERTEMUAN 3: PARTS OF A SENTENCE


MENGENAL BAGIAN – BAGIAN DARI SATU KALIMAT

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES


MATA KULIAH : BAHASA INGGRIS 4

A. INTRODUCTION

In the third meeting, We would like to inform that we are going to study parts of a
sentence. The material preparation of one semester in English IV . It is TOEFL preparation
which is taught when the students have passed the previous lesson of English I, II, and III. In this
lesson the students are hoped to be able to understand in both structure part and the written
expression part of the TOEFL. The students will have the module TOEFL Preparation which
discuss from chapter 1 to chapter 5. Chapter 1 discuss about: NOUNS, Chapter 2 discuss about :
PRONOUS, Chapter 3 Discuss about : PARTS OF A SENTENCE, Chapter 4 discuss about :
VERBS and chapter 5 discuss about : PREPOSITIONS.
In the third meeting, The students will discuss about parts of a sentence from the module,
after the discussion, the students will have a test to measure the english – language proficiency
of individuals about parts of a sentence from the module. The result can be used to indentify
student’s current levels of proficiency, to evaluate progress at the end of the every chapter.
Intensive Reading comprehension will be given in the first meeting. It is reading material which
will make the students think through the problems in the reading text about parts of a sentence
but also the students must understand the use of appropriate grammar in some contexts. The
students will be instructed to made the sentence or simple sentence which based on the
instruction while the learning process. Reading comprehension will guide the students to skim
and to scan the text which make the students think analyze about the situation in the text.
B. OBJECTIVE OF THE LECTURER
The objectives of the learning process are hoped to make the students understand the
structure part and the written Expression part of the TOEFL , each chapter opens with reading
passage of general interest, The aims of the chapter is to provide a context for the grammar
focused on in the chapter as well as to introduce students to the academic and law contents , The
students understand some vocabularies concerning the law and the academic materials , The
students will be guided to do some exercises in every chapter. .

C. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION

Phillis Wheatley

Phillis wheatley was kidnapped from Africa at the age of eight, she was brought to
Boston in 1761, a sickly child only able to speak senegalese. At the age of thirteen she wrote her
first poem. In 1773 her first book of poems was published the second volume of poetry published
by a women in America.
At the Boston slave market, phillis was purchased by john wheatley, a tailor whose wife,
impressed by the child’s aptitude, taught her to speak, read and write E nglish. In a few yaers
phillis had also learned geography, history, and latin and had develop a liking for classical poets
suchs as horace and virgil. Her first poem, a translation from Latin of ovid, so amazed the
literary circles in Boston that They had it published. In 1768 she wrote “to the kings most
excellent health,” and in 1772 she composed a poem to her mistress, who was so moved that she
freed Phlllis and send her to EEngland to regain her health.
With the London publication of her book, poems on various subject, religious and moral,
her fame spread on both sides of the Atlantic, and she became a celebrity.

2. grammar : parts of a sentence


The clause has a subject and a verb. It can stand independently or alone.

1.A simple sentence contains a singles clause.


She wrote a book
Subject verb object

2. A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a conjunction ( such as and
or but).
At age thirteen she wrote she wrote first poem and in 1773 she wrote her first book

- At age thirteen she wrote she wrote first poem = Independent clause
- and = conjuction
- in 1773 she wrote her first book = independent clause

3. A complex sentence contains an independent (main) clause and a dependent (subordinate)


clause. The subordinate clause may be a noun clause, an adverb clause, or an adjective clause.

Her mistress realized that Phillis was talented


- Her mistress realized = Main clause
- That Philis was talented = Noun clause

She wrote a poem for her mistress, who was very impressed.
- She wrote a poem for her mistress = Main clause
- who was very impressed = Adjective Clause

She went to England because she had health problems.


- She went to England = Main clause
- because she had health problems = Adverb Clause

A clause has a subject and a verb. Some verbs (action verbs take an object )

The verb / kata kerja


The verb may be a single word (wrote in the previous example) or a verb phrase with one or
more auxiliary verbs and a main verb (would have written) . the verb may be in active form or
passive form

The subject may take various forms : Subjek dalam kalimat Bhs Inggris memiliki beberapa

2. A Pronoun : She wrote a book
3. A clause : What He teached amazed everyone
4. A gerund : Writing was his talent
5. A gerund phrase : Writing poetry was his talent
6. An invinitive : To write requires special talent
7. An infinitive phrase : To write poetry in latin requires speial talent
