Project #3 – Gas Turbine – Case 29

Model the performance of a gas turbine fired with natural gas in ChemCad having the following
characteristics:

US Customary Units
Guaranteed Net Electrical Output at ISO Conditions on Natural Gas 200 MW
Net Heat Rate at ISO Conditions (LHV) 9267 BTU/kWh
Thermal Efficiency 36.81%
Exhaust flow to the HRSG 4,300,000 lb/hr

Firing Temperature (Combustor Outlet Temperature) 2500 F

Combustor pressure drop 5% of Inlet Pressure

Compression ratio 17
Compressor stages 18
Compressor efficiency 90%

Turbine stages
Turbine efficiency 88%
HRSG Pressure Drop 1 psi

All turbine stages are air cooled (Note)

Air is extracted from compressor stage 13 to cool the outlet of turbine stage 1 to 1925F.
Air is extracted from compressor stage 9 to cool the outlet of turbine stage 2 to 1475F.
The remaining air is extracted from compressor stage 6 to cool the outlet of turbine stage 3.

Notes and Assumptions:

1. Assume that the air is at ISO Conditions (59 oF, 14.7 psia, 60% relative humidity.)
2. Assume that natural gas is 100% methane (CH 4) delivered to the turbine at 59 oF and 475 psia.
3. Assume the pressure ratio across each compressor stage is constant.
4. Assume the pressure ratio across each turbine stage is constant.
5. Cooling air does not produce power to the stage which it is added but will produce power in
subsequent stages. It should enter at a pressure higher than the exhaust pressure of the turbine
stage.

Deliverables:

Produce a heat and material balance diagram for the gas turbine. Include the following Information

 What is the compressor power requirements, in MW?

 What is the turbine power requirements, in MW?
 What net power did you calculate for your gas turbine simulation, in MW?
 What is the difference between the power you calculated and the guaranteed power in the
table above?
 What is the temperature, pressure and flowrate of the cooling air to the first (hottest) turbine
stage?
 What is the temperature, pressure and flowrate of the cooling air to the second turbine stage?
 What is the temperature, pressure and flowrate of the cooling air to the third (coolest) turbine
stage?
 What is the temperature, pressure and flowrate of the air entering the combustor?
 How much natural gas is entering the combustor?
 What is the temperature of the flue gas to the HRSG?
 What is the CO2 Emissions Rate (lb CO2/MWh) based on the guaranteed electrical power?
