Dear Parent/Carer

Surf your way to success!

Our three priorities for this academic year are challenge, independence and wellbeing. We want to
make sure we challenge your child in every lesson, every day. We also believe that through focussing
on independent work outside of College, students’ achievement will increase. This is in addition to
supporting their wellbeing through our continued work to achieve the Wellbeing in School award. The
last priority will support students pastorally throughout the College.

Your child is, in effect, competing with all other Year 11 students across the Country, due to the new
GCSE assessment system. In order to secure the best possible outcomes for our students, we have
purchased internet-based learning and revision resources, that used frequently, will increase your
son/daughter’s chance of success in the summer.

Our experience shows that a little and often approach yields the best results and we would ask that
your child spends at least 30 minutes per day on these resources from now on, in addition to other
homework and revision cards. It is important that students focus on what they don’t know, and use
their personal Question Level Analysis (QLA) documents in subjects such as maths and science, to
identify where gaps in knowledge are. We are convinced that this approach will help your child to
achieve.

We will be monitoring usage of these resources and, as an incentive, we will give free prom tickets to
students who meet our expectations. As we want the best for your child, we will keep students behind
after-school who do not meet expectation, in order to catch up on missed learning.

We recently bought revision books for Maths, English and Science for your child. In addition to the
direction given below, they should also work through these. Your child’s teacher will check the work
when it is complete. The main two websites we are using are Hegartymaths and GCSE POD – both
websites allow us to track progress and usage; your child has a username and password for both. The
websites are artificially intelligent and create tasks for students based on internal analysis which focus
on previous errors. They are fantastic resources which students must use and make the most of.

Mathematics – Hegartymaths - https://hegartymaths.com

Students should use Hegartymaths for 30 minutes every other day. We can track task completion and
monitor their learning and progress. Hegarty also links to our QLAs and to the individualised PinPoint
learning resources your child will receive after the mock. Your child needs to use their individual QLA
(red and amber topics) to close gaps in their knowledge. It is essential they watch the videos, as this
helps them to learn.

Science – GCSE POD and exampro
GCSE POD www.gcsepod.com works in a similar way to Hegartymaths; students watch the video, then
answer the questions. As science is three subjects, we are asking that each student completes 30
minutes of science every other day. Students can also complete tasks on exampro, which is a free
website. This website provides exam-style questions for students to complete. A GCSE Science Guide
for Independent Revision is enclosed.

English – GCSE POD

Your child can also access English tasks on GCSE POD www.gcsepod.com. There are videos to watch,
questions to answer and also practice comprehension tasks.

Starting early and getting into good habits now will help your child as they approach the GCSEs. They
will be more successful if they revisit previous learning now, rather than putting off revision until later.

Yours sincerely

Stuart Edwards
Principal
