Stem Cells: Potential Benefits and
Bioethical Problems
Stem cells are the body's raw material; from them all other cells with specialized
functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or in a laboratory, the
stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells.
These daughter cells become new stem cells (self-renewal) or specialized cells
(differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart
muscle cells or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate
new types of cells.
Doctors and scientists are excited about stem cells because they could help in many
different areas of health and medical research. The study of stem cells can help
explain how serious diseases such as cancer and birth defects occur. Someday,
stem cells could be used to create cells and tissues for the treatment of many
diseases.

Advances and research with stem cells:

• The increase of stem cells in the brain may improve cognitive functions that are
lost with age.
• Create “biobots” with animal stem cells and capable of carrying out simple tasks.
• Amniotic membrane stem cells useful for studying gestational diabetes.
• "Artificial" spermatozoa and ovules from stem cells.
• Conclusions of the BioCord Board of Experts, for the World Day of Umbilical Cord
Blood
• An infarcted heart is regenerated with a bioimplant of umbilical cord cells
• Discover a molecule that could expand the number of stem cells present in a unit
of cord blood
• A patch with stem cells could be a treatment against heart failure.
• Create artificial embryos from a single mouse ear cell
• Stem cells for a painful disease in dogs
• Henrique recovers from aplastic anemia by transplanting with his umbilical cord
cells
• First treatment with stem cells to cure complex perianal fistulas

Stem cell treatment offers many benefits to patients who have been diagnosed with
debilitating chronic diseases. It provides a viable and effective therapy to improve
the natural ability to regenerate the body. It also provides a valuable source of
rejuvenation of tissues and organs, being one of the most used in anti-aging.
There are two positions that can sometimes be interpreted as contradictory. If the
center of discernment is located in the research activities by themselves, or in all
human beings who participate in the process.
Patients as beneficiaries may be exposed to decision-making that is not fully
informed because they suffer from great needs and anguish because they are
seriously faced without therapeutic options, and are subjected to pressure from
advertisements that promote the use of stem cells in the therapy of incurable
diseases as direct consumption.

It is important that sample donors understand the complications that may arise from
the sampling, since sometimes they are procedures that may involve some risk to
their health, even if they do not compromise life.

In conclusion, we can say that our team is in favor of stem cells, since they are an
important source of research for the cure of various diseases of the future, more and
more laboratories have stem cell manipulation techniques, in addition to that stem
cells are one of the most promising alternatives in the development of therapies and
procedures to cure diseases, to date, incurable.
