Final Term Examination (Winter-2019)
Course Title: Heat Transfer Instructor Name: Dr. Muhammad Amin
Class Number: 1481 Program: BSCHE

Note: Attempt all Questions

Q. NO.1:

Steam in the condenser of a power plant is to be condensed at a temperature of 30°C with cooling
water from a nearby lake, which enters the tubes of the condenser at 14°C and leaves at 22°C. The
surface area of the tubes is 45 m2, and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 2100 W/m2 · °C.
Determine the mass flow rate of the cooling water needed and the rate of condensation of the steam
in the condenser. (Marks=10)

Q. NO.2: A counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger is to heat water from 20°C to 80°C at a rate
of 1.2 kg/s. The heating is to be accomplished by geothermal water available at 160°C at a mass
flow rate of 2 kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled and has a diameter of 1.5 cm. If the overall heat
transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 640 W/m2 · °C, determine the length of the heat
exchanger required to achieve the desired heating. (Marks=10)

Q.No.3: A double-pipe counter-flow heat exchanger is to cool ethylene glycol (Cp _ 2560 J/kg ·
°C) flowing at a rate of 6.5 kg/s from 90°C to 30°C by water (Cp _ 4180 J/kg · °C) that enters at
18.5°C and leaves at 60.3°C. The overall heat transfer coefficient based on the inner surface area
of the tube is 205.6 W/m2 · °C. Determine (a) the rate of heat transfer, (b) the mass flow rate of
water, and (c) the heat transfer surface area on the inner side of the tube. (Marks=10)

Q.No.4: A double-pipe parallel-flow heat exchanger is to heat water (Cp _ 4180 J/kg · °C) from
20°C to 70°C at a rate of 0.5 kg/s. The heating is to be accomplished by geothermal water (Cp _
4310 J/kg · °C) available at 150 °F at a mass flow rate of 10 kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled
and has a diameter of 0.8 cm. If the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 530
W/m2 · °C, determine the length of the heat exchanger required to achieve the desired
heating.(Marks=10).

Q.No.5: In a counter flow single pass heat exchanger is used to cool the engine oil from 150˚C to
55˚C with water, available at 23˚C as the cooling medium. The specific heat of oil is 2125 J/kg K.
The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube of 0.4 m diameter is 2.2 kg/s. The flow rate
of oil through the outer tube of 0.75 m diameter is 2.4 kg/s. If the value of the overall heat transfer
co-efficient is 240 W/m2 K, how long must the heat exchanger be to meet its cooling requirement.
