METHOD STATEMENT FOR THE
CONSTRUCTION OF KERBS

ALL WORKS TO BE CARRIED OUT IN CONFORMITY WITH SPECIFICATION AND


APPROVED DRAWINGS.

A. Section 1: LAYING

1 Surveyor will do required setting out for the concrete foundation as
per approved layout plan. Survey pins at 10m centre.

2 Concrete for foundation will be laid.

3 Flexible board of 18mm thick will be provided every 4m long to form


an expansion joint.

4 Kerb units will be laid on (3:1) cement mortar bedding on the


previously laid concrete foundation within a tolerance of (± 3mm) at
each end of elements to the lines and grades given on the drawing.
Flexible board 18mm thick will be provided through the kerb and
backing as an expansion joint at each 4m.

5 After kerb units have been laid continuous backing shall be poured for
the elements using steel forms.

6 Joint between kerbs shall have a width of maximum 4mm and be


filled with a sand cement (1:1) mortar with one fifth (1/5) part
hydrated lime or equivalent chemical and pointing of joints shall be
made by groove tool and cured.

7 All Kerbs shall be thoroughly cleaned of all extraneous material prior


to approval.

8 Kerbs shall be painted (if applicable/required) with a reflecting white


or yellow paint and block paint by using of glass beads.

9 The paint shall be chlorinated rubber type specifically made for road
painting.

10 After the pattern of the painting is approved by the Client, the paint
shall be applied by approved system. The two coloured paints must
have sharp clear cut off edges between them.

SECTION 2: TILES (PAVING BLOCKS)

ALL WORKS TO BE CARRIED OUT IN CONFORMITY WITH SPECIFICATION AND
APPROVED DRAWINGS.

1. The Surveyor will do the required setting out of the kerb stone to suit the
approved pattern of tiles as per shop Drawing.

2. The approved bedding sand as per specification shall be spread in 50mm


thick layer on approved sub base layer. Slope and level of bedding
material shall be of the same tolerance as the final paving surface.

3. After spreading of 50mm thick sand bedding, the approved concrete


block paving shall be laid as per the approval pattern and shop drawings.

4. Inspection request shall be submitted before laying of tiles.

5. The paving alignment and levels shall be controlled by survey pegs at the
intervals of 10m and 2m in curves with string lines.

6. The edge restraint to the paved area shall be laid in advance of the laying
course, where block do not fit the edge restraint or other obstructions the
gaps shall be filled using fabricated and blocks.

7. After completion of 20m² or such area of the laying, Inspection Request


shall be issued for laying approval.

8. After approval of the laying, 2 passes of a vibratory plate compactor with


rubber mat device shall be used to seat the blocks in the bedding sand.
Fine dry approved joint filling sand shall then be brushed over the
paving filling the joint and further pass of the plate vibrator made in each
direction.

9. Immediately after compaction replace all damaged paving blocks and


joints > 3mm.

10. After initial compaction the joint (> 3mm) sand shall be brushed in to the
joints and vibrated with a vibrating plate compactor. This process shall
Continue until brushing and vibrating have filled all joints.

11. The finished surface shall be within 5mm with the design level and the
maximum deviation when checked by 3m straight edges shall not exceed
3mm.

C. CLEAN-UP

Upon completion, leave project site clear of debris and surplus material.
