We experienced driving in the foggy weather in Qatar.

Driving in fog is
considered to be the most dangerous weather hazard, especially if it is
exceptionally dense fog or combined with other adverse weather conditions.
Foggy conditions are the number one cause of large multi-car pile-ups.
However, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of a crash.

Tips for safe driving during foggy conditions:

DO:
 Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that allows you to stop
within the field of vision
 Make sure your vehicle's lights are turned on.
 Increase your following distance. You will need extra distance to brake
safely. Use the two second rule.
 Use your low-beam headlights. High beams reflect off the moisture
droplets in the fog, making it harder to see if you have fog lights on
your vehicle, use them, in addition to your low beams.
 Be patient. Avoid overtaking, changing lanes and crossing traffic.
 Use fixed objects or features to help guide you. E.g. Use the right edge
of the road as a guide, rather than the centreline.
 Look and listen for any hazards that may be ahead.
 Reduce the distractions in your vehicle. E.g. turn off your cell phone.
Your full attention is required.
 Keep looking as far ahead as possible.
 Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use your demister and wipers
to maximize your vision.
 If the fog is too dense to continue, pull completely off the road and try
to position your vehicle in a safe parking area. Turn on your hazard
warning lights, in addition to keeping your low-beams headlights on.
Wait for the fog to clear sufficiently to continue the journey.

DON’T
 Don’t switch on your hazard lights while travelling. This overrides the
directional indicators and creates a risk if you need to signal a change
of lane. Hazard warning lights only have two purposes:
 To indicate an immediate hazard on the road that other drivers need
to be aware of
 To indicate a stationery vehicle that cannot be moved due to an
electrical or mechanical problem
 Don’t stop on a highway or heavily trafficked road. You could become
the first link in a chain-reaction multi-vehicle “pile up”.
 Don’t speed up suddenly, even if the fog seems to be clearing. You
could find yourself suddenly back in fog.
 Don’t speed up to pass a vehicle moving slowly or to get away from a
vehicle that is following too closely.
 Before you drive, and during your trip, check weather forecasts and
road reports. If there is a weather warning or reports of poor visibility
and driving conditions, delay your trip until conditions improve, if
possible.
 Take an extra look before you cross the road and do not attempt to
cross the road if there are vehicles around - remember fog and wet
conditions increase the distance that cars need to stop.
 Visibility is reduced in foggy condition so wear high visibility clothing.
