GRADE 9 RECOLLECTION

SY 2017-2018

The Grade 9 Recollection is a journey towards forming a healthy conscience of the

students anchored on the life and teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, inspired by the teachings of
St. Ignatius. It focuses more on the witnessing aspect of their faith using responsibly their gift of
freedom.
Seen in the context of the Grade 9 students who are on the crossroad to discernment
process on moral issues, the recollection is aimed at awakening the student’s conscience to
appreciate and follow Christ’s example— to praise, reverence and serve God.
As a Jesuit school, we imbibe the spirituality of our founder St. Ignatius of Loyola
quoting the First Principle and Foundation: “Human beings are created to praise, reverence and
serve God our Lord. And by means of doing this, to save their souls. The other things on the
face of the earth are created for the human beings, to help them in the pursuit of the end for
which they are created.
From this it follows, that we ought to use these things to the extent that they help us
toward our end, and to free ourselves from them to the extent that they hinder us from it.
To attain this, it is necessary to make ourselves indifferent to all created things, in regard
to everything which is left to our free will and is not forbidden. Consequently, on our own part
we ought not to seek health rather than dishonor, a long life rather than a short one, and so on in
all other matters.
Rather, we ought to desire and choose only that which is more conductive to the end for
which we are created.”
Guided by this principle, we hope to unlock the Ignatian value of Discernment as our
weapon to attain healthy CONSCIENCE as we go through this recollection.

bad is a sin. It is an offense against reason, truth and right conscience. (CCC 1849)
 Conscience is understood as a kind of inner voice always summoning us to love the good
and avoid evil. (CFC 701)
 “But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days… I will
place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they
shall be my people.” (Jer. 31: 33)
