Executive Summary

THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

My Internship is an integral part of the Travel Insurance Sector. The Organization that I choose
for my internship project is Thomas Cook India Ltd. This Six week period of my internship in
such a huge Organization gave me a real time exposure to know about the organizational
process.

The project title of my training was “STUDY THE MARKET OF COUNSELLORS FOR
TRAVEL INSURANCE”. The project helped me to understand about the products and plans of
the company particularly the product TATA AIG Student Guard Plus Plan and how to promote
the company’s Plans to the Counsellors or better say Overseas Education Consultants. Through
my learning I came to know that the market of Counsellors depends on those students who travel
abroad for overseas education and the role of Counsellors is to provide right guidance and
assistance to these students in their education, learning and travelling abroad so that they can get
good foreign universities. After selection these students travel abroad for their higher education
and they need Student Insurance because of two reasons, first for getting VISA and secondly, it
is also one of the requirement of the Foreign Universities which makes the foreign students
eligible to study there. The Company provides the above mentioned plan for Student Insurance
and that’s why the company need to do tie-up with these Counsellors so as to grab maximum of
the outgoing students and generate revenues for their company by issuing these students their
plan/student travel policy.

The Study also helped me to know about company’s various market competitors through the
market research and how is Thomas Cook India Ltd. different and better from it in their Plans
and business strategies. Through the internship my negotiation skills also increased and also
came to know that to tackle any Counsellor is not so easy and that to Indian Counsellors as they
are very much aware of many things.

Introduction to the topic

➢ Study the Market of Counsellors for Travel Insurance -

Here Counsellors are the Overseas Education Consultants who do proper counselling of
students and give right guidance and learning to the students who want to study abroad. Thus the
market of the Counsellors is because of these students and when these students travel abroad for
Overseas Education they need VISA and for getting VISA, Travel Insurance or better say
Student Insurance is must and also many of the foreign universities/colleges demand Student
Insurance as one of its requirements and for this reason also Student Insurance becomes vital for
these students. Travel Insurance is must for students going for overseas education in European
Countries. Now the question arises “Why we are interested in these Overseas Education
Consultants?” The answer to the question is that the Company – Thomas Cook Insurance
Services (India) Ltd. is also having its business from Travel Insurance including Travel
Insurance of students going abroad for study, apart from Life Insurance and General Insurance
such as Home Insurance, Car Insurance, etc. and as the market of Counsellors is from students
going abroad for study for whom Student Insurance is must, thus there is a need to tap these
students for generating revenues for the company by issuing Student Insurance (TATA AIG
Student Guard Plus )Policy to them. Thus by tapping these Overseas Education Consultants we
can tap the potential, these potential students for the company and that’s the reason the company
is interested in these counsellors. The Company don’t make the Counsellors their agents but
make them the “COLLECTION REPRESENTATIVES” for their Organization by doing tie
up with these Overseas Education Consultants that only do collection from these students by
giving company’s insurance plan to the students and collected money is given by the Counsellor
to the Company and the company after getting money give suitable Pay Outs/Commissions to
the Counsellor which would have fixed earlier while doing tie-up via agreement.

NOTE -

6|Page
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

1) The Commission is between 25 to 33% and for higher Pay Outs, the person in higher
management is contacted and concerned.

2) The Commission is given depending on the business of the Counsellors.

3) Thomas Cook India Ltd. has tie up with TATA AIG General Insurance Company
Limited. and thus through Thomas Cook Insurance Services (India) Ltd. it sells TATA
AIG Product- TATA AIG Student Guard Plus

Why Students go abroad?

Study abroad can be an enriching and eye-opening adventure, where learning extends to the
world beyond the classroom walls. There is no substitute for living and studying in a foreign
country if you want to gain in-depth knowledge of another culture's customs, people, and
language. In addition, you will find that living and studying or working in another country can
develop important transnational competencies that can be of interest to future employers.

Personal Growth

Students who return from a study abroad program often see it as an experience which matured
them personally and intellectually. They praise being exposed to new ways of thinking and
living, which encourages growth and independence. For many students, going abroad to study is
the first time they have really been away from 'home,' from familiar surroundings of the INDIA,
as well as from friends and family. This is seldom an easy experience, but it is universally
praised as worthwhile, often even life-transforming. After immersing themselves in a new
culture, mastering the challenges of learning in a new and different academic environment, and
experiencing the many highs and laws of being a 'foreigner,' students typically return home with
increased self-confidence and justifiable pride in what they have achieved.

New Perspective on World Affairs

7|Page
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Study abroad can broaden your intellectual horizons and deepen your knowledge and
understanding of international, political, and economic issues. It is almost certain that you will
return from your sojourn abroad with a more informed and accurate perspective on world affairs.
You will also have first-hand knowledge of how another culture approaches the tasks and
challenges of everyday life, a sense of how 'global' the international culture has become, and an
appreciation of the importance of international cooperation.

You will probably also gain a broader understanding of, and appreciation for the India, its way of
life, and its role in international affairs. Through your professors, the other students in your
program, and people you meet, you'll learn how others view the United States and its world role.
If you live in a country where English is not the native language, or is spoken only by some, you
will learn the practical importance of learning another language and using it.

Career Enhancement
But study abroad does more than promote academic enrichment and personal growth. It also can
enhance your employment prospects, especially in the fields of business, international affairs,
and government service. Employers increasingly seek graduates who have studied abroad. They
know that students who have successfully completed a study abroad program are likely to
possess international knowledge and often second-language skills. Such students are also likely
to have other transnational competencies that graduate and professional schools and employers
value just as highly: cross-cultural communication skills, analytical skills, an understanding of
and familiarity with local customs and cultural contexts, flexibility, resilience, and the ability to
adapt to new circumstances and deal constructively with differences.

There are a host of valid reasons of students wanting to experience foreign study.

For getting good Foreign Universities/Colleges proper guidance and learning is required. And for
this good Counsellor or Overseas Education Consultant is needed to help and guide the Students.
Thus proper Counselling of student is required which is done by the Counsellors.

8|Page
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Role of Counsellor is to do Counselling and give proper guidance and information services

"Information, guidance and counselling services" refers to services intended to assist individuals,
of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational
choices and to manage their careers.

“Guidance and Counselling” includes a wide range of activities:

1) Activities within schools to help students clarify career goals and understand the world of
work

2) Personal or group-based assistance with decisions about initial courses of study, courses
of vocational training, further education and training

Benefits of counselling

The aims of Guidance and Counselling can be summarized as follows:

 “Guidance helps to build confidence and to empower individuals as well as making

people aware of new career possibilities, including civic, leisure, learning and work
opportunities and promotes the balance of life and work

 It promotes employability and adaptability by assisting people to make career decisions

both on entering the labour market and on moving within it

Importance of guidance and counselling within education system

 Career education has an important role to play within education in laying the foundations
for lifelong career development

 Guidance and Counselling are particularly important in post compulsory education. Here,
wider curriculum choice results in more diverse and complex routes into later stages of
education, into employment, or into both

This can help to:

9|Page
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

➢ reduce dropouts from and back-tracking within education systems, and thus improve
internal flows

➢ improve flows between different levels of education, thus raising national levels of
educational attainment

➢ improve transitions from education to the labour market

These outcomes help to make better use of educational resources, and to increase both
individual and social returns to investments in education.

If you are an Indian student going abroad for your studies(USA / UK / Australia / New Zealand
/ Russia / Singapore / Japan), you must know the importance of health insurance. Student
Medical Insurance is mandatory for all the universities worldwide, especially when you are an
international student.

But the question is, whether you should buy it from your home country, or from the university
itself? All universities, in association with local Insurer, offer Campus Medical Plan for their
students (domestic / foreign). However, they also waive it if the international student could get
any other insurance policy meeting its requirements.

Should one buy Student Insurance from India itself?

Actually, it does make sense when you buy insurance from India for a simple fact that it is far
cheaper and you save precious Forex. Buying insurance in Indian rupees costs you
approximately 1/5th of buying in Foreign Currencies. You can choose an insurance policy that is
university complaint and thus get the same or better benefits at a much lower price.

Moreover, most universities offer just the medical cover. But as you are staying in a completely
different country all alone, it is wise to get covered for other non-medical risks also. These may
include personal liability, luggage damage, passport loss, bail bond, Study interruption,
Repatriation of remains, Sponsor protection etc.

10 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Here are a certain things you need to keep in mind while buying your Student Health Insurance
from India:

Ensure it is University Compliant.

Your University would give you a waiver only if the insurance policy is compliant with the
university’s requirements. So be sure that all your insurance needs are compiled with. You may
pick your choice Tata-AIG Student Guard or ICICI Lombard / Bajaj Allianz Insurance plans .
They are University Compliant insurance policies for over 500 universities worldwide.

Protect yourself against non medical risks from TATA AIG Student Guard Plus

As mentioned before, most universities may require only medical coverage. But you should get
covered for other non-medical risks also, as even if they are not mandatory, they are extremely
important.

Check various plans offered by TATA AIG Student Guars Plus -coverage against personal
liability, luggage damage, passport loss, bail bond, Study interruption, Repatriation of remains,
Sponsor protection and much more.

Always check out the third party tie-ups

You do not want to be stuck in a claim. To ensue a smooth claim in future, always check the
Third Party Administrator tie up of the company you are buying insurance from. Check the
hospital network of the area/ country you are going for studies.

What are the average costs of medical treatment abroad?

Please refer to the table for average costs of medical treatment abroad in the U.S. vs India

O
verseas Travel Insurance for Students
Today foreign education is no longer the privilege of just elite people. With low interest rates on
student loans, going abroad for higher studies has become quite manageable. Lacks of Indian
students are now opting to study in US, UK, Australia and Germany to pursue higher education
since a degree obtained from universities of these countries holds greater value and assures a
promising career ahead. However, if you are a starter you have to make sure that you are well
prepared for your new temporary home. Buying a proper student mediclaim insurance is a
priority that demands proper attention.
Student medical insurance is a mandatory requirement at most foreign universities . Some
universities do provide students with an insurance plan. However, it is recommended that you
get a mediclaim health insurance from your home country and apply for an insurance waiver
simply because insurance from the home country is relatively cheaper and provides the same
coverage (and sometimes more) at a lower cost. The availability of dozens of insurance providers
may baffle you. Nonetheless, you have to be vigilant when it comes to choosing the right student
mediclaim health insurance policy.

12 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

TATA AIG Student Gurad Plus offers Student Medical Insurance that covers medical and
non-medical benefits . Buying in India means that you pay premiums in rupees and get benefits
in dollars! Our plan offers flexibility in extending the policy term to two years. Besides covering
hospitalization expenses, we also cover medical evacuation, repatriation, bail bond, trip
cancellation, interruption and delay, emergency medical treatment or evacuation, etc.

Industry Profile

India Travel Insurance is one of the latest introductions that have come about in the Insurance
Sector of India . Before delving deep into Indian Travel Insurance, let us get to the very root of
the topic.

With the advent of a host of liberalization measures taken up by the Government of India in
1991, the insurance sector has expanded radically. The issue of licenses to private companies
is seen as a major cause of such an expansion. It activated healthy competition between the
various players (both public and private) who started emerging with new policies and ideas.
Travel Insurance is a product of such a situation.

Travel and tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in India. With an improvement in the
standard of living, domestic and international travel for business as well as personal purposes has
become a widespread phenomenon. Coupled with this, both domestic and overseas travel has
become increasingly unpredictable which has risen the need for services that would cater to
traveling requirements in the event of occurrence of any such unprecedented consequences. Such
an assurance is provided by Travel Insurance in India .

Travel Insurance Policies cater to all worries related to traveling. It secures travelers in events
such as:

• Cancellation or interruption of travel plans

• Damage or loss of luggage

• Travel delays

• Illness or accidents

35 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Travel Insurance is insurance that is intended to cover medical expenses and financial (such as
money invested in nonrefundable pre-payments) and other losses incurred while traveling, either
within one's own country, or internationally. Temporary travel insurance can usually be arranged
at the time of the booking of a trip to cover exactly the duration of that trip, or a more extensive,
continuous insurance can be purchased from travel insurance companies, travel agents or directly
from travel suppliers such as cruiselines or tour operators. However, travel insurance purchased
from travel suppliers tends to be less inclusive than insurance offered by insurance companies.
Travel insurance often offers coverage for a variety of travelers. Student travel, business travel,
leisure travel, adventure travel, cruise travel, and international travel are all various options that
can be insured.

What is a Deductible?

Some insurance plans include a deductible. The deductible is a fixed dollar amount that an
individual must pay out of pocket before the insurance company will begin to cover the costs of
any health care services. For example, if a plan has a deductible of $100, then the insured party
must spend $100 on services out of pocket. After that $100 mark has been reached, the insurance
company will begin to assume responsibility for health care costs, usually either via co-insurance
or a co-pay, depending on the type of plan.
Typically, a health insurance plan with a high deductible has a much lower monthly premium,
while plans with lower deductibles will feature higher monthly premiums.

THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

70 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Research Methodology
Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. Research
methodology constitutes of research methods, selection criterion of research methods,
used in context of research study and explanation of using of a particular method or
technique so that research results are capable of being evaluated either by researcher
himself or by others. Why a research study has been undertaken, how the research
problem has been formulated, why data have been collected and what particular
technique of analyzing data has been used and a best of similar other question are usually
answered when we talk of Research methodology concerning a research problem or
study. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and which has not
been discovered as yet.

Meaning of Research

71 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

“Research is common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. In fact research is an act of
scientific investigation.”
The project was divided in to the following steps :

1. To decide objective of the Study:-

This step is also Research problem. Problem definition is the most critical part of the research
process. Research problem definition involves specifying the information needed by
management. The main objectives of the study are:
• To Study the market of Counsellors for Travel Insurance.
• To find out the interested Counsellors who are ready to do tie up with the company and
thus taking up TATA AIG Student Guard Plus plan for students.
2. To decide research design & application:-

72 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Research design involves defining the research problem, determining how to collect the data and
from whom, establishing the way the data will be analyzed estimating costs and the preparation
of the research approach. For this study, exploratory research was selected.
3. To decide Source of data there are two sources of data
 Primary Data
 Secondary Data
Primary data:-
Primary data is the original data collected specifically for the problem.
Reason for selecting primary data:-
In terms of primary data a questionnaire has been used to interview desire sample units that give
accurate and up to data information as well better to research problem.
Research approaches: - Primary data can be collected in five main ways: through Observation,
focus groups, surveys, behavioral data, and experiments.
Research instruments: - Instruments in collecting primary data:
 Questionnaires: - A questionnaire consists of questions presented to respondents for
their answers. Because of its flexibility, the questionnaire is by far the most common
Instrument used to collect primary data. Questions can be open-ended or closed Ended.

Secondary data:-
Data potentially useful in solving a current problem but that were collected for a different
purpose.

Reason for selecting secondary data:-

Secondary data can be gathered quickly and inexpensively, compared to primary data, it is clear
useful to study analyzing the recent development in the industry.

73 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Contact methods: - Once the sampling plan has been determined, the marketing researcher must
decide how the subject should be contact:
 Mail questionnaire: - The mail questionnaire is the best way to reach people who would
not give personal interviews or whose responses might be biased or distorted by the
interviewers. Mail questionnaires require simple and clearly worded questions.
 Telephone interview: - Telephone interviewing is the best method for gathering
information quickly; the interviewer is also able to clarify questions if respondents do
not understand them. The response rate is typically higher than in the case of mailed
questionnaires.
 Personal interview: - Personal interviewing is the most versatile method. The
interviewer can ask more questions and record additional observations about the
respondent, such as dress and body language. Personal interviewing takes two forms. In
arranged interviews, respondents are contacted for an appointment, and often a small
payment or incentive is offered. Intercept interviews involve stopping people at a
shopping mall or busy street corner and requesting an interview.
 Online interviews: - There is increased use of online methods. There are so many ways
to use the Net to do research. In this method, researcher can include a questionnaire on
its Web site and offer a people to answer the questionnaire.
4. To decide the form of data collection:-
For this project, survey method was selected which was carried through person interview
because more information from different counsellors were required for the analysis.

5. To organize & collect data:-

Once the researcher has formulated and development a research design including
Questionnaire second thing he has to decide whether he has to collect the information from all
the targeted customers. There can be two types of survey are possible.

74 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

 Sample Survey
 Census Survey
“For this project sample Survey was chosen”
Characteristics of the sample survey are:-
 It is cheaper than census survey
 It requires less time
 It is economical
 More detail information can be collected
 Deciding the sample plan requires following decisions
 Sample unit “Who is to be surveyed”

AREA OF STUDY
The area of the study was related with getting correct information from the Counsellors, residing
in Delhi about their market.

SAMPLE DESIGN

A sample design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample from a given population. It refers to the
techniques or the procedure the researcher would adopt in selecting items for the sample. Sample
design may as well be drawn from the population to be included in the sample i.e. the size of the
sample. Sample design is determined before data are collected. Sample is the true representation
of the population by studying of the sample we can predict the behaviour of the population.

Population Size : A total of 192 Counsellors are in Delhi.

During my study I have taken 30 Overseas Education Consultants as the size of sample.
Sample Size: 30 (in this case)

75 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

Method of Sampling:-
In this project, the survey was done within the market that means probabilistic convenience
Sampling was carried out.
6. To process & analyze data:-
After the data was collected it was tabulated, analyzed and interpreted to the conclusion reach.
Techniques Applied
Bar Chart: - A chart in which the length of the bar represents the amount of the item associated
with the bar.
Pie Chart: - A circle divided in two sections, such that each section represent the percentage of
the total area of a circle associates with one variable.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

 The research done is Exploratory Research as data is collected

1) From Secondary data Via Internet from various websites.
2) FOCUS GROUPS via Questionnaire

 Population Size = 192

 Sample Size = 30
 Random Sampling used

Limitations of the study

➢ Market research is limited to Delhi city only due to limited time period.
➢ On the basis of 30 sample size all the inferences has been made.
➢ Limited time period due to which unable to make the counsellors Collection
Representatives for the Organization.
➢ Inability to meet all the Counsellors residing in Delhi due to limited time period.
➢ While designing the questionnaire it was kept in mind to gather more and more
information from each target person. For this neither short nor descriptive questions
could have served the purpose. Therefore the questionnaire contained in the open-ended
questions.
➢ The study is based on the information gathered from the Overseas Education Consultants.
Therefore in such a case it is possible that the information supplied might be biased
because the counsellors might have shown partiality towards giving correct responses.

77 | P a g e
THOMAS COOK INDIA LTD.

➢ Since the survey was limited to 30 Overseas Education Consultants it is rather difficult to
give a precise conclusion but I have tried to the best of my capability to give the
conclusion in a comprehensive manner.

RECOMMENDATIONS / SUGGESTIONS

INSURANCE COMPANY LIMITED and it sell its TATA AIG Student Guard Plus Plan,
which is one of the best plan providing many benefits with additional features attached
to it.

➢ Appointment should be taken before meeting the Counsellors and if the appointment gets
