The Okinawans eat vegetables, fruit, fish, soy, and rice. They usually serve portions of fruit and vegetables a
day. People do not usually drink much alcohol or smoke. They do not eat much meat or fast food.
2. ___________________________________________________
Physical activity is very important to the people of Okinawa. Martial arts, walking, traditional dancing, and
gardening are very popular with people of all ages.
3. ___________________________________________________
In many countries, people have healthy diets and exercise. But the unusual thing about the people in Okinawa
is that they are not stressed. They are relaxed and take time. Buses are hardly ever on time, and people often
arrive an hour late for meetings. Every evening hundreds of people, young and old, go to the beach to watch
the beautiful sunset. People often meditate to relax.
4. _____________________________________________________
Another important thing is that people often work until they are 80 – sometimes until 90! In the Okinawan
dialect, there is no word for “retired”. They are busy and active all their lives. Older people do not stay at home
– they go out and meet friends.
When journalists ask people “What is the secret of your long life?”, they answer “We are happy, we are always
positive, and we are never in a hurry.”
INSTRUCTIONS: Read the rest of the article. Put the headings in each blank.
Always active – Exercise – Low stress – A healthy diet

Nature!. This program tries to help both animals and plants in our countryside, beaches and
mountains.
Animals and plants are disappearing because we humans are not taking care of them. We
are throwing our rubbish in the sea, on the streets and in the country. The animals are
getting trapped in the plastic bags, or getting ill because we are throwing chemicals and
rubbish in the forest. Forest fires are also killing thousands of animals and plants.

INSTRUCTIONS: Read the text. Which country do you think Hapland really is? Why?
Are large, rich countries like the USA happier than the rest of the world? Are countries with
nice weather and good food, like Italy and Spain, happier?
It seems the answer is ‘no’. Research says that little Hapland, with its five – and – a – half
million people, is happier than other countries in the world. Why?
The weather in Hapland is cold and rainy. The neighbors, the Norwegians, are richer than
they are and their neighbors, the Swedes, are just as tall and blond and more sporty, but it
seems they are not as happy as the Haplanders. Maybe Tahiti and Bali are more beautiful
than Hapland but the people of Hapland are happier than the people in those exotic places.
So why are the Haplanders happy? Some students at the University of Hapland give their
opinions…
‘Hapland is the European cup winner of 1992. I know there are bigger and stronger teams
than our team. We are the European winners of that year, and that makes us happy. And
you know, they say blond people have more fun than the rest of the world; we have more
beautiful blondes than anywhere else. Just joking!’
Fritz
‘Hapland is safe. Our capital city, Copenhagen, is less dangerous than New York or London
and there is not much crime here. We have more freedom, we work less – we have a six-
week holiday every year – and we are not workaholics! We enjoy life.’
Lars
‘I think small countries like our country are happier than big countries like the USA. America
is rich and powerful but that does not make people happy there. In our country, the
differences between the rich and the poor are smaller.’
Agneta
‘People in southern Europe, you know, Italy and Greece, look happier – maybe they laugh
more than we do, but they are not as content as we are. We are not as stressed as they are
– we do not worry about things like losing a job because here we have good social assistance
– the state takes care of us.’
Eva

INSTRUCTIONS: Read the following text and answer the questions provided.
Most human beings are awake during the day and sleep all night. Owls live the opposite
way. Owls are nocturnal. This means that they sleep all day and stay awake at night. Because
owls are nocturnal, this means they eat at night. But finding food in the dark is difficult. To
help them, they have special eyes and ears. Owls have very large eyes. These eyes absorb
more light than normal. Since there is little light during the night, it is helpful to be able to
absorb more of it. This helps owls find food in the dark. Owls also have very good hearing.
Even when owls are in the trees, they are able to hear small animals moving in the grass
below. This helps owls catch their prey even when it is very dark. Like owls, mice are also
nocturnal animals. Mice have an excellent sense of smell. This helps them find food in the
dark. Being nocturnal helps mice to hide from the many different animals that want to eat
them. Most of the birds, snakes, and lizards that like to eat mice sleep at night— except, of
course, owls!
