III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s activity
A. Routinary Activities
1. Opening prayer
Class, please stand up and let The pupils will stand up and pray
us pray (call a pupil to lead the
prayer)

Good morning class! Good morning ma’am!

You may take your seats Thank you, ma’am!
2. Checking of attendance No one is absent ma’am
Is there someone absent today
miss secretary?

B. Preparatory Activities
1. Review
Do you still remember our Our lesson yesterday is about Prime and
lesson yesterday? What is it? Composite numbers

Very good!

Can someone tell me what is A prime number is a number with only

Prime numbers? How about two factors: one and itself
Composite numbers? A composite number is a number with
more than two factors.

Very good!

And what are factors? Factors are numbers that we will multiply
to get a product
Very good, always remember
that the number of factors
determines whether a number
is prime or composite

Ok let us check if you can

determine what is a prime and
composite numbers (show
flashcards with prime and
composite number, call
someone in class to answer)
1. 17
2. 40 Prime number
3. 11 Composite number
4. 18 Prime number
5. 13 Composite number
Prime number
2. Motivation
Show a picture of two girls.
One girl gives an apple to the
other girl.

A girl giving an apple to the other girl

Random answers from pupils

Possible answer: Yes, it is good to share

because by sharing we are helping
someone who is in need and we also
share the blessings of God and we gain
Ask pupils to tell something about the friends. (pupils have varied answers)
picture. Elicit the value of sharing.
In what way can we share at home?
How about in school?
Is it good to share? Why?

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Today we are going to find the
Common Factors and the Greatest
Common Factors

D. Lesson Proper
Present a problem in the Class
(show a strip of cartolina, Have the
pupils read the problem)

Mary has 12 apples and Claire has

18 apples. Each of them will share
the apples to their friends. What is
the greatest number of apples Apples
each of their friends get, if Mary
and Claire will give the same
number of apples?
Mary has 12 apples

Then ask:
What kind of fruit does Mary and Claire has 18 apples
Claire will be sharing to their
friends? To their friends

How many apples does Mary

have?

How about Claire?

To whom they are sharing the

apples?

Now the problem is asking us,

what is the greatest number of
apples, each of Mary and
Claire’s friend will get?

So, we will find the Greatest

Common Factor (GCF) of the
given numbers which is 12 and 18.
(put the numbers 12 and 18)

Now class there are 3 methods in

finding the Common Factors and
the Greatest Common Factors

Method 1: Listing
We can get the answer by listing
the factors of 12 and 18.
Again, when we say factors, these
are the numbers multiplied to get a
product.

You will just think of two number

that when multiplied the answer is
12 and 18 (call pupils to give their
answer and have them paste the 12: 1 x 12
printed numbers on the board) 2x6
3x4
First the number 12
18: 1 x 18
2x9
3x6
How about 18

From what you have answered on

the board, can you tell me what
are the factors of 12?
(List all the factors of 12 and 18 Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12
and arrange them in increasing
number) Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18

First number 12:

Second number 18:

Yes
From your answers what can you 12 and 18: 1, 2, 3, and 6
noticed with the factors of both
numbers 12 and 18?
Are there similar numbers?
What are those?
(encircle the numbers)

Very good! The numbers that are

both present in 12 and 18 are 1,
2,3, and 6 and this is what we
called Common Factors- are
factors common to two number 6
numbers.
(Paste the definition on the board)

Now class, what is the biggest

number that is both present in 12
and 18?

Very good! And this number is

what we call the Greatest
Common Factor or GCF- is the
biggest factor common to two
numbers.
(Paste the definition on the board)

Method 2: Prime Factorization

Steps
a) write each number as a product of
its prime factors using a factor
tree. (Write on the board)
Common Factors are factors common to
two numbers.

Greatest Common Factor or GCF

is the biggest factor common to
two numbers.

We find the Greatest Common Factor or

GCF of two numbers by Listing method,
Prime factorization, and Continuous
division
b) Copy prime factors
12 = 2 x 2 x 3
18 = 2 3x3

c) Copy the common prime factors

and multiply them to get the
Greatest Common Factor

Common factors of 12 and 18:

2x3=6
Greatest Common Factor is 6

How about
Method 3: Continuous Division
We can also find the common
factors and the GCF using
Continuous Division

Steps
a) Write the numbers horizontally.

b) Find a prime number that will

divide both numbers.

c) Divide the numbers by the given

prime number and write the
quotients below the dividends.

d) Continue the process until none of

the two numbers have a common
prime divisor.

e) Multiply all the prime divisors

common to the given numbers to
get the GCF.

Common Factors: 12 = 2 x 3
18 = 2 x 3

Greatest Common Factors:

2 x 3 =6

Thus, each of Mary and Claire’s

friend gets 6 apples

E. Generalization
What are Common Factors?
What is Greatest Common Factor
or GCF of two numbers

How do we find the Greatest

Common Factor or GCF of two
numbers?

F. Application
I will group you into 3 groups.
Each group will be given a manila
paper and write your solution in
finding the Common factor and the
greatest common factor.

Group 1- Use listing method in

finding the Common Factors and
