Concept note;
Mindanao ethnic music is based on two musical and cultural
traditions namely, the Islamic and Non-Islamic cultures.
Islamic culture and traditions are observed among the
Maguindanao, Maranao, Yakan, Samal, and Tausug while the
Non-Islamic traditions are practiced by the Manobo, Bagobo,
Subanon, Bilaan, Tiruray and T’boli.
15 minutes The music found and heard in Northern and
Southern Mindanao is exhibited in the vocal and instrumental
genre. The vocal collection is performed either in solo or in the
call-response manner. In call-response, the parts of the song
are alternately sung in solo or in groups. The basic vocal
technique used among the Mindanao ethnic groups is called the
melisma technique. This is characterized by long phrasings, a
narrow range and the fluttering of unsteady tones called
tremolos. Adding melodic embellishments or decorations as well
as using nasal enunciation to interpret a song is part of the
Mindanao vocal style.
