3. A sample of 1000 USIU Union voters revealed the following concerning three
candidates;

Nyambane, Bill and Patel, who were running for the University’s Chairman, Secretary
and Treasurer respectively,.
140 preferred both Nyambura and Bill
490 preferred Nyambane or Bill but not Patel
210 preferred Bill but not Patel or Nyambane
610 preferred Bill or Patel but not Nyambane
320 preferred Patel but not Nyambane or Bill
70 preferred Nyambane and Patel but not Bill.
Required:
i. With the aid of a Venn diagram, determine the number of voters that were in favor of
all the three candidates. Assume that every member voted for at least one candidate.
(3 marks)

ii. Determine the candidate who went unopposed if a rule of 50% majority were used in
such a decision (2 marks)
4. A carpenter sells chairs. For an order of y chairs, his total cost in dollars is
C  0.05 y 2  15 y  25 and his total revenue is R  0.025 y 2  25 y
i. Find the profit P on an order of y chairs (2 marks)
ii. Find the profit on an order of 50 chairs. (2 marks)
