GENERIC NAME: Sodium-Potassium-Chloride-Dextrose, Electrolytes-Dextrose
BRAND NAME: AdvancedCare, Classic Liters, Freezer Pops, Sparkling

Rush
DRUG CLASS: Fluid & electrolyte replacement.

MOA: Allows the homeostatic mechanisms of thirst and renal

function to remain intact; and avoids the risk of death from

severe dehydration. Thirst determines the amount of

rehydration required, and normal renal function allows

excretion of any excess water and salts.


DOSE AND ROUTE: <1yr: see manufacturer instructions

≥1yr:1–2L/day for as long as diarrhea continues.


INDICATION: Used to replace fluids and minerals (such as sodium,

potassium) lost due to diarrhea and vomiting. It helps

prevent or treat the loss of too much body water

(dehydration).
CONTRAINDICATION As sole therapy in severe continuing diarrhea. Intractable

: vomiting. Adynamic ileus. Intestinal obstruction or perforated

bowel. Anuria, oliguria, or impaired homeostatic mechanism.


SIDE EFFECTS: Mild nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness, swelling of

ankles/feet, mental/mood changes, seizures,


ADVERSE EFFECTS: Allergic reactions such as rash, itching/swelling (especially

of the face, tongue, throat), severe dizziness and trouble


breathing.

NURSING 1. Check the doctor’s order

RESPONSIBILITIES: 2. Check expiration date and make sure packaging

is not tampered with.

3. Monitor blood pressure (detect shock due to

severe dehydration)

4. Monitor body weight ( to determine rehydration of

the recurrence of dehydration)

5. Monitor stool volume, color and consistency

6. Assess for signs of rehydration such as good skin

turgor, normal urine flow, normal pulse rate and

volume.

7. Instruct patient not to take the drug with fruit juices

eat food with added salt unless directed by the

physician.

8. Asses for signs of hypersensitivity

9. Encourage patient to increase oral fluid intake

10. Regulate IVF regularly (if patient has IV)
