UNIT 5: LINEAR EQUATIONS UNIT PLAN
Title: Unit 5 Linear Equations for Algebra 1 CL

Grade Level: 9th – 10th

Unit Rationale: Linear equations can be used to model everyday situations whether it is
predicting the amount of money you have in 10 years if you save a given amount every month,
or if you are curious to find out how many total calories you can burn if you worked out
consistently twice a week. It is important for students to discover the value of understanding
linear equations and their applications in order to be able to use this knowledge to make rational
predictions in real-world situations. By grasping this content students will be able to build the
basic foundation to learn that math really does occur in everyday life and will be able to move on
to more complex modeling (aside from linear relationships) in the future.

Goals: Students will be able to distinguish the slope and y intercept of a line given a table of
values, a graph, or an equation and they will also be able to create a table of values, a graph, or a
linear equation. Students will also be able to model a scenario mathematically using linear
equations in either standard form or slope-intercept form and make predictions based on their
calculated linear equations.
