On Monday 19th of October the 6th year Home Economics stu-
dents were delighted to welcome Mr. Eamonn Lonergan of
Knockanore cheese to give a talk about his successful Irish
Farmhouse Cheese business. Students enjoyed the talk where they
learned how Knockanore Irish Farmhouse Cheese was established
and had the opportunity to sample the beautiful cheeses that
recently won two Gold medals and one silver at the International
Cheese Competition and also won Gold and Silver at the World
Cheese Awards for their Oakwood Smoked Cheese. The Home
Economics department would like to thank Mr. Lonergan for his
excellent presentation to the students and wish Knockanore
Farmhouse Cheese every success in the future.

CREDIT UNIONS UNDERSTAND MEMBERS' NEEDS
According to Kieron Brennan CEO of the Irish League of Credit
Unions.
"Credit unions are based in the heart of local communities and
have a real understanding of the needs of their members. In these
uncertain times, more and more people are turning to credit unions
as they become disillusioned with other financial providers. Credit
unions are all about people. They exist to serve members, not to
profit from their needs".
The ILCU represents 103 Credit Unions in Northern Ireland, with
almost 380,000 members, and assets of £885 million.
Earlier this year, credit unions in Ireland announced a new associ-
ation with Irish international rugby player Brian O'Driscoll. Over
the coming year Brian will be working with the Irish League of Paggy Lawton, Helen Waide and Nuala

Credit Unions to promote both credit unions and credit union ini-
tiatives. This association will seek to highlight the very signifi-
cant contribution that credit unions make in local communities at
every level.
Commenting on the announcement Brian O Driscoll said "I am
delighted to have become involved with the credit union move-
ment at this time. I believe it is an important time for our commu-
nities and I have always greatly admired the valuable role that
credit unions have played in fostering a sense of belonging and
team work".
The Irish Credit Union movement is among the most successful in
the world with the highest membership per capita. Started in 1958
by 3 pioneers, Nora Herlihy, Séamus P Mac Eoin and Sean Forde,
the Irish Credit Union movement has steadily expanded its servic-

First Meeting of GIY Youghal From 6.30pm on Wednesday the
4th of November the library in Youghal will be the venue for the
inaugural meeting of GIY (Grow it Yourself) Youghal. GIY
Youghal will meet thereafter on the first Thursday of each month.
GIY networks aim to take the ''self'' out of ''self-sufficiency'' by get-
ting back-garden growers together on a regular basis to talk, learn
from each other and exchange tips, produce and war-stories! The
meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing at
all levels, i.e. from growing a few herbs on the balcony to complete
self-sufficiency, from beginners to old hands. Hundreds of people
are involved in existing GIY groups around Ireland and activities
include talks on specific food-growing topics, garden visits, seed
swaps, produce bartering, mentor panels and the return of the
meitheal (where growers get together in one another's gardens to

TIDY TOWN'S 2009
REPORT REVEALS
YOUGHAL IMPRESSION

Youghal Town Cllr Mary Linehan Foley delivered a synopsis of
the Adjudication Report from 2009 Tidy Towns Competition
(Cork South) to the October meeting. The report's comments
seemed surprisingly positive, given the dog turds, fag butts, beer
cans, abandoned plastic bags, Moll Goggin's corner apartment
block, etc., that one encounters on an average stroll through the
jurisdiction. Possibly, the adjudicators like to emphasise the posi-
tive by way of encouragement, in the manner of an art teacher
telling a student he has 'a good eye for colour' while disregarding
the squashed pizza effect on the canvas. (Crosshaven got similar
commentary and finished 36 points below us.)
In any case, Youghal's 272 marks from 400 beat Midleton's pal-
try244. The report is too lengthy to repeat in full but the adjudica-
tion report contained the following pats on the head:
Overall Development Approach:
Local people very well informed of plans and activities and con-
tact with schools on six different contexts very worthwhile.
The Built Environment: New enterprises were found to be blend-
ing well with traditional businesses, Katrina in the visitor centre
was "very helpful" and the heritage trail was very impressive. The
Visitor Centre and Youghal Town Council Offices were "beauti-
ful" and the Market Square "supreme," with the cut-stone monu-
ment to Danny "Duis" McCarthy much admired. Gaelscoil
Chorain, its railings and piers, were much appreciated, as were the
town's churches and major historical structures. The report notes
busy, attractive shops "with no sign of the recession" (!) at the end
of June. On a detrimental note, the compiler felt "some suitable
protective structures" could be installed at Buttimer's and Harvey's
Quays "to avoid people accidentally falling into the docks." So the
Tidy Town's adjudicators committee would recommend the 800
year-old quayside be fenced off?!!
Landscaping: Memorial (Green) Park was lauded, with high
praise for the "magnificent" and "exciting" Youghal Tidy Town's
Committee booklet. Wildflowers growing out of stone walls were
considered excellent."
Wildife and Natural Amenities: Sadly, much appreciation here,
with the scenic splendour and tranquil ambience of the Slob Bank
described as "a rough road surface not that suited to walking" and
bedecked with "lots of vegetation and all kinds of briars." It was
recommended it be chemically treated. That'll go down well with
the underage drinkers!!
Litter Control: Litter was deemed "well controlled, with only iso-
lated bits" on the road to the recycling centre, near the Strand
Church, around the docks, plus a few more places! Bizarrely, the
reporter noted that, "some of this may have come from passing
motorists" and "doubts if much of it was discarded by locals." The
town centre was deemed "almost litter free" and "was being tidied
up by a gentleman."
Waste Minimisation: The compiler was "surprised" to find "a
mattress and lots of other items, some in plastic bags, dumped at
the rear of the old Youghal Carpets building." A local man said this
was prevalent in other areas too, particularly since the €3 entrance
fee to the ('free') recycling centre was introduced. The centre itself
was described as "busy" with the depot and landfill "clean and
orderly." It was noted that the schools' waste minimisation initia-
tive programme had been completed but that it was unclear
whether this was in connection to a relevant 'green flag' education-
al programme.
Tidiness: The town was considered "orderly and tidy, especially
in the town centre," with weed-free, well-swept kerbs. It was rec-
ommended that rear of Youghal Carpets be boarded up and that the
Tidy Towns Committee attend to "the walk starting at the dump,"
i.e. the Slob Bank, if under it's control.
Residential Areas:
The name signs were praised, especially the stone sign for Dr.
stone sign for Dr. Kennedy's Place. The estates were considered to
be generally well kept, with some attractive to excellent landscap-
ing. Likewise the traditional town houses were largely "well pre-
sented" with "attractive colour schemes, beautiful hanging bas-
kets, window boxes and tubs of flowers." Sever private hoses, it
was noted, had "brilliant displays of flowers, shrubs, trees and
hedging," all of which "bolster the public flora to show to town at
its best." Mention was made of "a bungalow at the back of St.
Mary's Collegiate, across from a small car park, that has excep-
tional landscaping to the front where the house nestles peacefully
on the side of a hill."
Roads, Streets and Back Areas: The roads were generally "in
good condition," with road signs "clean and distinct." Youghal
was found to have "great footpaths that lead out long distances
from the town centre, with many people walking on a sunny day."
(Sure sign of recession at last?!). The roadside verges at the town
entrances were "well maintained" and helped extend "a welcom-
ing feeling at the glorious landscaping at the roundabouts" and
thereafter.
General Impression: The writer said, "it was a pleasure to visit
Youghal," after a ten year absence. He had found "great improve-
ments" towards its current "high standard" and was impressed
with 'the way the back areas have been developed." He thanked all
for the Tidy Town's Committee for its efforts and presentation.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING
RE-EMPHASISES
PRE-TENANCY COURSES

Future local authority tenants may or may not be aware that, part
of the process in gaining the keys to the new residence involves
attending a pre-tenancy course. The matter was briefly re-empha-
sised by Town Clerk Liam Ryan at the October Town Council
meeting.
Mr. Ryan first explained that the purpose of such a course was to
explain the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlord in all
aspects of management and upkeep of property. Further issues
include the council's Anti-Social Behaviour Policy, waste recy-
cling, differential rent schemes, various rent payment methods and
options with regard to purchasing the property. He added that
agencies invited to send representatives also to attend the course
include the Garda, MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service)
and the Community Welfare Office.
He summarised the ore-tenancy course format thus:
1) Introduction; 2) Meeting addressed by Garda MSBS and CWO
representatives; 3) Letting Agreement read; 4) Tenants advised
they are responsible for insuring contents of property; 5) Councils
Anti=Social Policy explained; 6) Tenants encouraged to establish
Residents' Association or join existing one; 7) Tenants advised o
waste disposal, recycling and composting options; 8) Rents calcu-
lation and payment methods explained; 9) options for purchase
outlined; 10) Town Foreman/Engineer advised s on electrical,
plumbing and maintenance issues; 11) Letting Agreement signed
and keys handed over; 12) On completion of course, tenant signs
a Declaration stating that the Letting Agreement has been fully
explained, that they understand the terms and conditions and have
been given a copy of the Tenant Handbook.
Youghal Bowling Club
Last Tuesday's competition was very closely contested with very
few points separating the teams. The winners on the day were :-
Mary Sheehan, Emily Fitzgerald and Ann Galvin. Well done
ladies. Best score in the Pairs competition went to Kitty shields

Vicious attack on a humble lady
West Waterford has once again hit national news headlines and
sadly for all the wrong reasons - The shocking story of the brutal
attack and robbery of a local lady - has left everyone in a state of
fear and disbelief. The vicious attack began early on Saturday
morning when it is believed that three men broke in to the victim's
house, tied her up and beat her until she handed over her savings.
She was then taken out side her home where she was again tied her
up and beaten again by the raiders before they left the scene.
Eventually the lady managed to free herself and call for help. She
was taken to Hospital where she is presently being treated for her
injuries.
Knowing the victim - she is a most humble, gentle and unasuming
lady who devoted many years of her life caring for her elderly par-
ents both of whom are now deceased. From a farming background
- she worked hard all her life and would not be easily intimidated.
She loves the simple things of life, to reside in the comfort and
security of her own home would be of great importance to her -
sadly this attack has robbed her of that too We pray she will make
a full and speedy recovery.
While none can compare with this most recent attack -we have had
a series of robberies right throughout the West Waterford area, in
recent weeks. Including a break in at our church in Piltown last
week. Meanwhile it is inexcusable that people should have to live
in fear of their lives in their homes. We all seem to be sitting idly
by like stroke victims - helpless and totally frustrated at our inabil-
ity to help those who have already been victimised, or to prevent
further attacks in the future.
Equally inexcusable are the reasons being given to justify these
crimes - that the perpetrators were under the influence of drugs or
drink. Crime like this is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Community Alert -Revived
In response to all the terrible events that have taken place in our
community in recent weeks it has been decided to revive
"Community Alert". In this past this group was a very active force
in the parish and no doubt it was a great deterrent for criminal
activity and hopefully it will be again in the future.
Our first meeting to revive Community Alert in Clashmore and
Piltown area, took place last Thursday evening in Kinsalebeg Hall
and there was an overwhelming response from the public.
A similar meeting followed in Ardmore later that evening both
meetings were addressed by members of An Garda Siochana.
Kinsalebeg Macra AGM
We had an excellent turn out at the Decies Bar for our Annual
General Meeting of Kinsalebeg Macra. Great to see lots of new
faces and we have a big increase in our membership for the com-
ing year. Our team of officers were returned unopposed with
Seamus Barron returning as Chairman, Aileen Barron returns as
secretary. Our outgoing treasurer did not seek re-election - our
new treasurer is William Keane. P.R.O again for the coming year
will be Edmond Og Ledingham - you can text or call him with any

Sympathy
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mary Murray Kilmaloo and
Catherine Hourigan and their families on the death of their moth-
er Mrs Maisie Fitzgearld The cliff Ardmore. Predeceased by her
husband Michael and son Edmond Maisie is also survived by her
brothers Michael and William Tobin her grandchildren nieces
nephews relatives friends and neighbours. Her removal took place
on Tuesday evening to St Declan's Church Ardmore and following
requiem mass on t Wednesday Maisie was laid to rest in Holy

Autumn Stations
The seasonal celebration of Autumn Stations in homes throughout
the parish has commenced. While this traditional celebration of
mass in homes in small areas within the parish is still very strong
in other areas station masses are struggling to survive.
Do please try to keep this lovely costume alive by hosting the sta-
tions - and if you are hosting the stations this Autumn do please
contact our parish priest and he will be happy to arrange a suitable
date with you.

Thursday Club - hosted an afternoon tea dance in Kinsalebeg
Community Hall. Members of the Youghal Cumann Na dAoine

Bill Lackey Marie McGrath and Teresa Lenane stepping out on the dance floor.
Aglish and Villerstown joined us. The ever popular Pat Tobin pro-

The 20/25 strong committee has been chaired by Ned Brennan for

Abernethy Cup
On Saturday evening last our senior hurling team took on Cloyne
in the final of the Abernethy Cup. This competition is run by the
East Cork Juveniles Board to raise much need funds for our under
age divisional teams so its nice to see that the seniors take an inter-
est in the stars of the future.
With a league semi final against Sars coming up this game for the
lads this was a measure of where we were at not to mention friend-
ly local rivalry, pride of parish and all that goes with winning any
trophy.
Against a strong breeze in the opening half Joe Deane opened our
account from a 40 yard free before Cloyne responded with a goal.
The lads settled and points came from Joe Deane, Larry Collins,
Paudraig McCarthy, Sean Long and Joe Budds while our defence
worked tirelessly to repel any Cloyne attack. The loss of Brendan
Barry due to injury unsettled us momentarily but we managed to
go in at the break 0-8 to 1-2 up. The second half was by no means
a classic and unfortunetly saw tempers flare on several on occa-
sions to see James Birmingham flash four red cards. When play
resumed Joe Deane and Andy Walsh added two points a piece
before Joe Budds slipped in behind the Cloyne defence to put him-
self in a one on one situation with Donal Og. He made no mistake
firing it to the left corner of the net. That was to be the final nail
in the coffin. Captain Paudraig McGrath accepted the Abernethy
Cup from Regina Abernethy, Chairperson of the East Cork
Juvenile Board.

TEAM YOUGHAL
RAISE €3,042 FOR
THE EMER CASEY
FOUNDATION
At a function at Farrells Summerfield Bar recently Team Youghal
handed over a cheque to the Emer Casey Foundation for €3,042.
This was the proceeds from sponsorship in the recent Race Around
Ireland 1,350 mile Cycle.
Ranked as the second toughest ultra-endurance race in the World
by the Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association it was always going to
be tough going for all the competitors.
This was the first event of its kind in Ireland and it attracted the top
ultra distance riders in the World including the World Champion
Caroline Van Den Bulk and current World Cup leader Fabio
Biasiolo as well as runner up in Race Across America 2008 Mark
Pattinson.
Team Youghal finished in 9th place overall from a start list of 30
and were the first 8 man team to finish in a time of 90 hours and 6
minutes.
Team would like to thank all those who supported them especial-

IRWIN'S POINTING THE
WAY WITH DIGITAL
WIZARDRY

Few areas of activity have become more enhanced and advanced
by digital technology than photography, with each year bringing
fresh innovations. Irwin's of Youghal is testimony to this and down
in its North Main Street shop, they are pretty proud of the latest
developments (literally) in their services.
For a year now the shop has staff and customers to process digital
images by way of a computerised multi-media, Kodak 'Kiosk'
located at the counter. This touch-screen system effectively dupli-
cates the process that qualified technicians, with elaborate
patience, used to do in dark rooms in times gone by, only moreso
and far faster.
So far so picturesque, but now additional software installed on the
system has brought a dramatic increase in options. The kiosk is
linked to a Kodak Adaptive Picture Exchange (KAPEX) on the
premises. This fridge-sized machine controls several printers, each
of which performs distinct functions. These options are displayed
on the touch-screen menu, giving camera users a wide menu of
choices that allows even the most novice snappers to turn their
photos into modes of perfection. It is the only model of its kind in
the east Cork region.
The range is phenomenal. Any photo can be minimised to passport
size, enlarged to wall poster (on paper or canvas), or be produced
as a collage, calendar or neat and labelled photo book. 'Any photo'
implies much, as the Kiosk accepts a broad range of digital
sources, including camera, phone memory card, USB stick, CD,
Bluetooth transmission or even e-mail.
The KAPEX not only goes beyond modern camera technology but
also before it. "One of our most popular services is duplicating and
enhancing old photographs" says proprietor Eddie Irwin. "Black &
white comes up very well and for only €6.50 we can store old
prints from a minimum of 60 up to 200, onto a CD or photo book."
Regardless of tone or colour, shadows and 'red-eye can be elimi-
nated to deliver the vividness and detail that matches one's mem-
ory of the event.
Prices vary according to service, size and time but are highly com-
petitive. An averaged sized print from a digital camera, for exam-
ple, can be processed in seconds for 75c a print. However, with
next day processing by staff, it cost just 20c per print, while spe-
cial offers apply for prints of 100 or more. Photo books take about
an hour to process and emerge as neatly ordered, titled packages
to requested dimensions, starting from €29.99 for 10 double-sided
pages. Passport/ID sized photos cost €9.99 for eight.
Symbolic of space-age technology, the system is a processing
plant in miniature. Even five years ago it's speed, flexibility and
user-friendly manoeuvrability would have been unimaginable. It is
the future arrived.
Digital technology represents "about 80% of our business nowa-
days," comments Eddie. Yet he also welcomes the old 35mm and
ABS films. "They are dying out rapidly but are still fairly popular
through disposable cameras," he explains.
Disposable cameras, by definition, contravene modern values of
course, with anything disposable deemed deadly in these environ-
mental-conscious days. And it's bad enough being disposable, but
if you're messy as well, then you're future address is a place called
Oblivion. "The old method involves usage of chemical," says
Eddie in the manner of a doctor breaking bad news. "The extra
advantage of KAPEX is that its dry technology. Its very green."

GARDAI HOPE PARENTS
CARE ON HALLOWEEN

Youghal gardai are keen for parents to be particularly aware of
their children's whereabouts and intentions over the coming
Halloween. Speaking on the station's weekly CRY report, Garda
Peter Queally recalled that last year was a particularly disruptive
and depressing Halloween in east Cork and asked parents to
understand the potential for problem, whether through peer pres-
sure or personal intent. He also reassured that extra garda
resources would be deployed throughout the region.
Eggs; Garda Queally also requested retailers to be alert for signs
of intended disruption, such as a sudden increase young people
purchasing eggs "They are unlikely to be baking cakes!" he sug-
gested ruefully, adding that, "throwing eggs, even against a hard
surface like a wall is deemed a criminal offence of defacing prop-
erty." The garda's concern coincides with a report that Tesco's in
Youghal and Midleton had decided, almost unbelievably, to locate
their eggs near the stores' entrances, at €1 per ½ dozen. Given the
time of year, there are those who would consider the initiative
more cynically opportunistic than coincidental.
Fireworks: The radio report also outlined firework offences relat-
ed to Halloween. Possessing unlicensed (bought from unlicensed
dealers) fireworks carries a fine of up to €10,000 and/or five years
imprisonment. Similar penalties apply for throwing an unlicensed
firework or having possession with intent to supply. Types of fire-
work thus considered include loud Black Cats, whereas such as
Sparklers are normally licensed for sale.
While it is not an offence to conduct firework display in one's gar-
den, it may be offensive, Garda Queally explained. He recom-
mended that people consult with their neighbours or consider pos-
sible disruption to them, especially regarding the welfare of small
children who maybe sleeping, or possibly pet animal concerns,
before dispatching fireworks.
Alcohol: Garda Queally rounded off the Halloween agenda by
submitting that Halloween partying on the beach was not illegal
but the same didn't apply to consuming alcohol there simultane-
ously. That in turn prompted him to remind parents to check also
on their offspring's activities during this week of school holidays.
"We have a serious underage drinking problem," he explained.
Garda patrols : The spokesman then addressed an unfortunate
misconception regarding garda patrols. "Recently," he said, 'some
elderly people have called to the station seeking reassurance of
Garda presence or even reporting suspicious disturbances in the
vicinity of their homes late at night. Some callers mistakenly
believed that, with the station closed overnight, Youghal gardai are
dispersed to Midleton. "That's not the case. In fact, we have extra
resources on patrol in town because the station is unmanned,"
reassured Garda Queally. "And if someone rings us, the phone will
be answered in Midleton and a message relayed to us immediate-
ly." Garda Queally also reported that a woman declined to ring the
gardai on a Saturday night because she was afraid they'd be too
busy. "We are never too busy for a call. We have the resources," he
said.
Crime: From a quiet week previous, there were two particular
incidents recalled. A burglary at the Walter Raleigh resulted in a
fast arrest, with the alleged culprit due to appear before Youghal's
November court sitting.
On October 17th, between 8 and 10 pm, damage was caused to
property at the new St. Raphael's building. Garda Queally said
CCTV footage was quite good and several youths may be identi-
fied in due course. However, he said gardai are also eager for any
information on the incident, with full confidence assured. He
repeated the possible consequences arising from of arrest for such
incidents. "You only get one or two chances at the Juvenile
Diversion programme before court appearances ensue. A convic-
tion there stays with your for a long time and can badly affect job
and travel prospects," he concluded. Youghal gardai can be con-

 YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB
The Weekly Spin - Sunday 18th
October.
It finally came. The Rain turned up
on Sunday morning as the Youghal
Club gathered as always by the Clock Gate for our weekly spin.
The planned spin for the morning was going to be wet 60km spin
around East Cork. Fair Play to the peleton of 16 that left Youghal
at 9.00am sharp and headed directly out the main road to Killeagh
and Castlemartyr before turning left for Ladysbridge, Garryvoe,
Shanagarry and Ballycotton. From There we rode over the climbs
to Churchtown South and on to Cloyne, back past Ballymaloe
House, Garryvoe, Ballymacoda and on to the Bog Road before
arriving back in Youghal for 12.30pm. It was a tough morning on
the bike for all. We started out with 16 riders but only finished up
with 8 riders in the peleton. 4 separate groups of 2 returned early
due to a large number of mechanical problems and punctures for
some of the riders as well as 3 riders carrying injuries into the spin
so they were all wise to turn off and complete shorter spins. So a
very tough morning indeed for all those who showed up for the
spin on our first wet spin of the winter.
The Weekly Spin - Sunday 25th October.
After two wet spins the previous two weekends we were all glad
that the sun was shinning last Sunday. The Youghal Club gathered
as always by the Clock Gate and the planned spin for the morning
was going to be 70km spin around West Waterford. A group of 18
left Youghal at 9.00am sharp and headed directly out the main road
to Dungarvan before turning left at the garage for Cappoquin. We
were all glad of the coffee stop in Cappoquin as a strong headwind
had made life interesting at the head of the peleton. All refreshed
from the coffee, we headed back into the wind and made our way
to Lismore & Tallow. It must be said though that riding through
Tallow was like riding through the Arenberg Forest in Paris -
Roubaix. We will have to get the Secretary to have a quiet word
with the powers that be in his native home. After bouncing our
way through Tallow, we headed directly up the climb to Youghal
where there was lots of panting and very little banter. We all sur-
vived the climb though and were glad to open up the throttle on the
scenic decent into Youghal. We all arrived back in Youghal for
12.30pm. It was a tough morning again on the bike for all due to
the headwinds but with everyone doing their bit on the front it was
also one of the most enjoyable spins of the new winter training
season.
Weekend Spins.
As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every
Sunday morning at 9.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub
by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every
week usually takes between 2 to 3 hours ( weather permitting ) and
covers on average between 50 to 70km ( 35 to 50 miles ). The pace
is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee or
tea.
A second group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning
at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock
Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually
takes around 2 hours to complete and covers on average between
30 to 40km ( 20 to 25 miles ). The pace is again very comfortable.
This is the perfect time for someone new to start with the group.
With a steady pace and friendly people you are assured of an
enjoyable spin. New members or visitors to the area are always
welcome.

The AGM of Claycastle Pitch and putt Club was held in Tides bar
on Monday 19th of October.Yet again the turnout was extremely
low with just 20 members present, this is a trend that will have to
change in future years if people want to continue playing on our
great course.

Ballycotton ‘10’ 2010 -
Important Announcement
Due to circumstances outside of our control, we have had to move
the date of the 2010 Ballycotton '10' from Sunday March 7th to
Sunday March 21st. We apologise for any inconvenience caused
as a result of this change.
Our original date of March 7th clashes with the AAI National
Senior & Junior Cross-Country Championships. In 2009 these
championships were held on Sunday March 1st but as the first of
March next year falls on a Monday, they have been moved forward
to the 7th. In the past, these championships were always held at the
end of February so that's why this problem hasn't arisen before.
Our second choice of Sunday March 14th clashes with the Cloyne
Point-to-Point race meeting and with the resulting huge volume of
traffic in the area it would be impossible to hold both events on the
same day. We did consider moving back to February 28th but felt
this would detract from the elite side of the race as it is just a week
before the National C-C.
So the date of the 33rd Annual Ballycotton '10' is Sunday March
21st 2010. Details of the entry procedure will be published on the
Ballycotton website www.ballycottonrunning.com on Thursday
next, October 22nd.

Winter League
Last season we had a record number of 16 players enter the Winter
League, it was a great success and we are delighted to be able to
report that we have 34 players entered this year!! The format of
the competition has the league drawn into four sections. The sec-
tions are seeded with the top players from the ladder being evenly
mixed through the four sections. Players will match off against
each other over the coming months. The top four from each sec-
tion will then qualify for the Winter Cup and the bottom for the
Winter Plate. The sections have thrown up some good combina-
tions and we are looking forward to seeing how players like Simon
Primm, Brian Walsh & Mark Walsh do in Section A. Meanwhile
in Section B we will be looking to see how Jimmy Keogh, Billy
O’Callaghan, Brian Coakley & Brian Fitzgerald perform. Section
C new players to watch are John Malone, Jason Browne & Martin
Pierce, while in Section D John Kenefick, Kevin Power & Stuart
Hickey will be looking to make a dent in their sections also.

Racquetball Association Of Ireland Fundraiser
A few weeks ago the RAI held a fundraiser in Kingscourt, Co
Cavan. Local man Keith Gallogley travelled from Youghal to
compete. The format of this competition was an open draw, where
you could get drawn against Ireland top players. Keith did very
well and managed to beat some very stiff opposition in the open-
ing rounds as he caused a bit of an upset as he progressed to the
semi-final and knocked out a couple of B players on the way. In
the semi-final he was drawn against Sean Keane from Fermoy.
Sean is an open player and also an established player on the Irish
Team. This was a bridge too far for Keith, but we are all delight-
ed with his progress in this competition.
National Club Championships
These are being held in O’Loughlin Gaels on the weekend of
November 21st & 22nd. Entry form is posted in the alley for those
interested.
Munster Junior Championships
These are being held in Rossmore on the weekend of October 31st.
This year we have Keane McCarthy (U11) & Killian McCarthy
(U13) entering from Youghal, we wish them the best of luck!
AGM
The Club AGM was held and we were delighted to have a big
attendance for the meeting. There was much lively discussion and
overall consensus that the membership is delighted with how the
Club has progressed over the past 12-18 months. The new com-
mittee was elected and is as follows: Chairman – Keith Gallogley,
Vice-Chair – Olan McCarthy, Secretary – Wayne Fitzgerald,
Treasurer - Bill Kelly, Committee – Brian Fitzgerald, Jody

Munster Senior League 1st Division
Youghal United 2 – 0 College Corinthians
After last weeks disappointing 3 – 0 away loss to Tramore
Athletic, Youghal United had to regroup and refocus this week for
the league leaders College Corinthians. As it was last week
Youghal had a few out with injury and guys who couldn’t be there
because of work commitments. We were down to the bare mini-
mum again but credit to the lads they got stuck in there from the
off. We wanted to make Ardrath Park a difficult place for away
teams this season and I think we sent out that message after send-
ing the top side home empty handed.Corinthians started the better

they arrived at the Youghal United penalty box that the home side
dealt with them and took the ball off them. Slowly the midfield got
to grips with the pace of the game at which College exerted on

side throughout the game giving their back four no time on the
ball. All that pressure paid off when Mossie was put through on
goal took one touch and drove the ball pass the outrushing keeper
into the far corner. This exercise was practiced in training the night
before and it was good to see it come off on the pitch.The lads sat
back a little and let College play again until they came around the
box where challenges were put in and a good defensive unit of
Diarmuid Shuel, Anthony Kelly, John Brennan and Conor O’
Sullivan dealt with everything thrown at them. The away side
resorted to long range efforts and over hit through balls. Half time
1-0.We went in at half time and spoke of the fact we were giving
too much possession away and if we could hold onto the ball a bit
more it would relief some pressure on our back four. We knew our
opponents would start the second half bright and we were up to the
challenge. Youghal grew in confidence and had a couple of decent
efforts on goal. At the other end David Kearns kept Youghal’s lead
in tact with some fine keeping, shot stopping and under high balls.
This was a battle to the death and Youghal’s energy and persist-
ence paid off when Mossie got on the score sheet again with min-
utes left. He went at the College defence and was taken down by
the keeper but no whistle from the referee as we were all looking
for penalty claims but to Mossie’s credit he got straight back up
and tapped in for a two nil win. The boys saw out the remainder of
the half to record their first victory of the season against a very

Girls U16 Match Report Premier Division
Youghal Utd 1 - 2 Ballinhassig 11/10/09
Ballinhassig travelled to Youghal as favourites to take the points in
this game. However it was the Youghal girls that started the better,
and following a ball sent in to the Ballinhassig area it was Ann
McCarthy who got her head to the ball and found the net to give
Youghal the lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. Both
defences had to work hard as this game was going from end to end,
Katie Manning in the Youghal defence, on her first game at under
16 level, played a fine first half. Youghal continued to hold on to
their slender lead and went in at half time one up.
Ballinhassig came out in the second half and were determined to
push Youghal to the limit, and brought a fine save out of the
Youghal keeper, Sarah Louise Flaherty, with a shot that had goal
written all over it.
With four minutes left it looked like the Youghal girls had done
enough to hold on for their first win, however Ballinhassig kept
playing football and were rewarded when Ciara O’Leary picked
up a great pass on the edge of the Youghal area and rode a strong
challenge to get into the Youghal box where she weaved passed the
Youghal defence to set herself up and shoot into the far corner and
level the game.
Following the kickoff the Youghal girls to their credit pushed for-
ward to try to get the lead back but two minutes later when the
Ballinhassig girls won the ball inside their own half they played
the ball quickly through the midfield with some lovely passing and
Aisling O’Brien made no mistake and finished with a strong shot
to the Youghal net to snatch a win with one minute left in the
game.
Excellent for Ballinhassig were Miriam O’Riordan, Emma
O’Donovan, Claire Christopher and Jane O’Leary, While excellent
for Youghal were Kirsty Mason, Biane Roche, Katie Manning and
in goal Sarah Louise Flaherty. A very entertaining game and a
credit to both teams.
Girls U12 Match Report Division 2
Youghal Utd 0 - 1 St Mary’s 10/10/09
St. Mary’s travelled to Youghal for this fixture that had been
scheduled to be played at St. Mary’s Park, Kilcully but by mutual
agreement the fixture was reversed and played in Youghal. The
game kicked off at 11.30 in bright sunshine on a perfect day for

football. From the start this game was a tough tight affair, with the
St. Mary’s defence proving too strong for the Youghal girls and
limiting Youghal’s top scorer Holly Twomey to very few chances
on goal. St.Mary’s scored what was to prove the winning goal
when Orláith O’Leary got on to the ball just inside the Youghal
box and picked her spot and finished with a beautiful strike to take
the lead and win the game for St. Mary’s.
The players that stood out for St. Mary’s were Emma Price, Niamh
Ryan and Aisling McKenzie while for Youghal were Holly
Twomey, Sarah Roche and Lizzie Perry.
U18 Girls Match Report Premier Division
Youghal Utd 5 - 2 Douglas Hall 4/10/09
Youghal went in to this game looking for their first win in the pre-
mier division. They started off in determined form and battled hard
and pushed Douglas Hall in to their own area. They were reward-
ed when following a corner Aisling Coleman was on hand to give
Youghal the lead when she finished coolly from a group of play-
ers. Youghal continued to play good football and when Kate
Sheehan passed a diagonal ball to the left wing Lisa O’Sullivan
picked it up and looked like she was going to be closed down but
somehow made room for her shot from outside the box and the
ball finished in the top corner of the Douglas Hall net. Douglas
Hall however did not lie down and just before half time made it 2
- 1 at the break. Carol Keniry had done some great running on the
right wing and was by far the superior in her battle with the
Douglas Hall full back.
The second half started with Sarah Goggin going close however
the Youghal girls didn’t have to wait long for their next goal.
Following a through ball by Kate Sheehan, Gemma Lyons was
first to get a touch and was behind the Hall defence and finished
from the edge of the box to make it 3 - 1. Lisa O’Sullivan was next
on the score sheet for her second and Youghal’s fourth. Kirsty
Mason had to come off the Youghal defence with a leg injury and
was replaced by Elaine Meade who had some good play putting
pressure on the Hall defence. Douglas Hall were still pushing for
a goal and were rewarded when a ball over the top was chased
down by the number 8 who finished to the Youghal net to make it
4 - 2. Shortly after this the Douglas Hall girl again found her way
clear on goal only to have Biane Roche make the tackle of the day
to save Youghal girls conceding another goal. The Youghal girls
kept pushing the Hall girls all the way to the end and were reward-
ed when Gemma Lyons who saved the best for last finished the
game off when she carried the ball into the Douglas hall area and
beat three defenders to blast the ball to the back of the net.
Best for Youghal were Gemma Lyons, Lisa O’Sullivan, Kate
Sheehan and making her debut in goal Evelyn O’Brien.
KGK COMMUNITY HALL
The American Tea Party at the KGK Community Hall on Saturday
24th October was a great success. Well done to all involved in
organizing this fundraising event! Your hard work, long hours and
cooperation was clearly evident and greatly appreciated by all who
attended.
The tables were beautifully arranged and dressed amid the soft
lighting around the hall. The dinners and desserts, supplied by our
hosts, were of the highest standard. In line with the theme of the
evening, each of the 20 tables was given a US state-name. There
was a general US trivia quiz to keep the party going. Novelty
prizes were handed out to various participants. A raffle was also
held with prizes to be won, which were generously donated by
several sponsors.
Dancing to the music of the local Bride Valley Boys kept the
atmosphere alive until the wee small hours. A great night was had
by all.
The KGK Community Hall Committee would like to give a very
special thanks to all of our sponsors, organisers and young adults
who helped throughout the night and most importantly to all of
you who attended which made the night a fantastic success.

Christmas Tournament
An adult mixed doubles tournament will take place on Thursday
26th November at 7.30pm. This will be our traditional Christmas
tournament with prizes up for grabs. This is a good opportunity to
catch up with fellow members in the pre-Christmas season. All
members are encouraged to attend. Proceeds will be donated to the
St. Vincent de Paul society.
Adult Club Night
The adult club night continues every Thursday from 7.30pm-
9.30pm. This is a mixed doubles event and is open to all levels,
members and non members. Entry fee is €2 for this event.
Fortunately there is usually a good turn out for this event. We look
forward to seeing more members coming out to play on Thursday
nights.

have held a night out for members and we look forward to seeing

Adult Coaching
Adult coaching ended on Friday 17th October. Many thanks to
our coach Ger Flynn, who traveled to us from Sundays Well
Tennis Club. Thanks also to the large number of members who
enthusiastically signed up for coaching. Participants were very
pleased with the coaching session and we hope to have Ger back
again in the near future.

We are fortunate to have four courts to cater for the increasing
number of members playing tennis, two of which were completed
earlier this year. All courts are also floodlit so members can play
throughout the winter even when the evenings are dark.
Membership is steadily increasing at the club and it is great to see
so many people out playing tennis at all times, in many weathers.
Ladder Tournament
The club recently purchased three ladders for tournaments. The
committee are keen to put the ladders to use immediately and so a
ladder tournament is underway for ladies and men.The ladders can
be seen in the club house. If you are interested in taking part in
the ladies or mens ladder tournament please write your name and

Department of the Environment have approved the following
additional funding for Cork County Council under the Housing
Adaptation Grant Schemes for Older People and People with a
Disability.

SIMI Launches Nationwide Safe
Car Campaign 2009 offering
Motorists Free Car Safety Check
The SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry on the 31st
August) launched its ‘Safe Car Campaign 2009’ . The SIMI
is offering motorists a visual car check, free of charge, at
participating dealerships for the months of September and
October 2009, just in time for the back to school run!
The Safe Car Campaign 2009 will highlight the importance
of regular vehicle servicing and encourage drivers to be
aware of the necessity to check their vehicle on an ongoing
basis. The SIMI has devised a Visual Check Sheet which
garages will provide to the customer on completion of the
check. The visual check will include checks on tyres, brakes,
suspension, steering, levels, battery & hoses, interior con-
trols, lights and exhaust.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, SIMI’s Director
General, Alan Nolan said, “We are encouraging all motorists
to avail of this free, 10-point car check which is being
offered at all participating SIMI member garages. With chil-
dren back to school and the inevitable increase in traffic, it
is important that people are mindful of the importance of
checking items such as tyres and brakes on a regular basis.
This free check will identify any major problems that may
exist in the car and make drivers aware of the areas that they
should be vigilant of and check regularly.”

3rd & 4th October
The Cork 20 International Rally was the final round of the Tarmac
Championship and there was a strong east Cork presence on the
event.Gareth macHale won the event with an impressive fastest
time on every stage but Eugene Donnelly in the Skoda won the
Tarmac Championship with a controlled drive to take second.A
very impressive 4th overall and 4th in the Tarmac Championship
was Midleton driver Daragh O ' Riordan who was an easy winner
of class A6a and was first two wheel drive car home.
Another impressive drive from Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald in
the Class 13 corolla, the sideways Allen was 4th overall in the
National section of the rally and first in class.
The battle of the rally was in class 11 between Jason Ryan , Moss
Fitzgerald and Wesley Daly seconds seperated these lads all week-
end the win going to Jason Ryan in the Youghal Kia Motors Civic,
a mere 4 seconds behind was Moss Fitzgerald in the Corolla and
20 seconds later the Escort of Wesley Daly , other finishers in that
class included William Walsh /Ed O Neill and Michael Murphy
/Pat Cashman both in Corollas.
William Kenneally / Finbarr Fogerty finished 4th in class 12 and
James Cunningham and Joe Fitzgibbon finished 4th on the Sunday
run.

there in comfort and style.
