Dear heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I
ask you this special one (Mention Favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and

Perhaps you are a live at home mother, juggling the plethora of tasks
that make up the job of running a household. The ability to multi-task is
central to the business-world, and a nightcourse is just the way to find
out if you have got what it takes. There are many courses provided for
those seeking to harness their creativity. It is very difficult to sit down
at home, with all its distractions, and bash out a short-story or painting.

Mayhem and Merriment at
Youghal Medieval Festival
The stunning surroundings of St. Mary’s Gardens, Youghal once
again proved to be the location for the biggest and best of the
country’s medieval celebrations of Heritage week. In excess of
5,000 visitors enjoyed the sunshine on Sunday 24th August in
what has now become an annual event for Youghal.
The event organised by Youghal’s Municipal Heritage Committee
was designed to ’bring the heritage of Youghal to life,’ for The Irish
Walled Towns Network’ celebration of National Heritage Week.
The aim of the festival was to provide a unique insight into life in
medieval times. Anna Loughlin, Rose Sheehan and
Theresa Lucey- Redbarn Arts and
Catherine Desmond of the organising committee commented on Crafts
Youghal town cryer Cliff Winser
the day: "We are once again delighted to give visitors the opportu-
nity to step back in time, and witness a piece of Youghal’s
medieval history. The re-enactments, Kid’s Kingdom, puppet
shows, and this years inclusion of live music, made this an enter-
taining day out for all the family. The fact that RTE’s Nationwide
were on hand to capture the event made it all the more special."
Sunday’s events which began at 12.00pm included a theatrical
piece entitled ’The Florence Newton Witch Trial Re-Enactment,
composed by local historian Kieran Groeger, and directed by Ms.
Teresa Cudlip. The production brought passion, colour and excite-
ment to an action-packed day.
UCC Medieval and Renaissance Society demonstrated their fight-
ing skills in a carefully choreographed ’battle siege re-enactment
in the upper garden. The group performed a series of archery dis-
plays, cookery displays and many other medieval events.
Children of all ages were able to enter the ’Kids Kingdom’ for a The Walsh family

the day. Fun-packed hours were spent in particular with face-
painting, magic shows, and stilt walkers, together with everyone’s
favourite, Prince August Toy Soldier Factory.
Visitors in their thousands savoured the delights of the extensive
range of stalls on ’Maid Marion’s Food & Craft Fair, - hosted by
local traders and producers.
A live music spectacle with performances by local band ’ISIS’ and
the ever popular ’Bombshells’ from Cork City only added to the
already unique and electric atmosphere.
The festival concluded with performances from Youghal Pipe
Band followed by a presentation of prizes to Fancy Dress

AWARE REQUIRES
VOLUNTEERS IN CORK
FOR DAISY DAYS
Wilma and Hugh Carson and Monica Cullen
Aware s national annual fundraiser, Daisy Days, takes place
throughout Co Cork on September 11th, 12th, and 13th next and
the organisation is now seeking volunteers to help with the event
in their local area. Aware relies on fundraising events like Daisy
Days for approximately 80% of its budget each year, and local col-
lections simply cannot go ahead without volunteers. To volunteer
for Daisy Days or for further information please call 01 661 7211
or email fundraising@aware.ie
Over 5,000 volunteers are required nationwide to make this event
happen. One can help out by either organising a rota of volunteers
in their local area, or else by collecting for two or three hours on
any of the days. By assisting with Daisy Days, volunteers will be
making a very real contribution to the fight against depression and
suicide. It is estimated that more than 400,000 people in Ireland
Alice Terry with Michael, Grace and Amy Crotty experience depression, and one in three of us will be affected by
the condition at some time in our lives. Experts suggest that up to
80% of suicides can be traced back to depression.
Proceeds from Daisy Days go to the maintenance and develop-
ment of Aware s vital services for those affected by depression.
Services include a network of support groups nationwide, for
those who experience the condition, as well as for relatives. The
organisation also operates a loCall helpline open 365 days a year
(1890 303 302), a nationwide secondary schools awareness pro-
gramme called Beat the Blues, regular public lectures and free
information service. For information on Aware services in Co
Cork, including the support group in Cork City, see www.aware.ie

South & East Cork Area Development (S&ECAD) has nominated
two Youghal business initiatives to contest this year’s Ulster Bank
Business Achievers Awards. Youghal Comhaltas (Ceolta Si) and
Aquatrek sailing, cruise and power boat services were nominated
for a Community Social Entrepreneurship Award and Best Business
Start-up Award, respectively. They are the only two companies in
the region nominated by S&ECAD. Edel Smiddy, development
officer with S&CAAD, says, the businesses are prime examples of
how "innovative and sustainable success can be achieved and nur-
tured in a community. They certainly deserve the recognition and
the positive profile that arises from being nominated."
Ceolta Si has travelled from being a homeless organisation reliant

stance as a major cultural, educational and tourism attraction. In an
impeccable display of fiscal management it built its grant-assisted
headquarters Bru ni Si in 2004, and has already cleared the
300,000 bill. A similarly priced extension is now at the planning
stage.
Aquatrek was formed in 2007 and has regenerated water sport activ-
ity in the harbour. As well as supplying a vital tourist attraction, the
company runs sailing courses to meet every age, category and qual-
ification. Nominations for the Ulster Bank Achievers awards are
accepted under seven categories: Environmental/ Sustainability;
Community/ Social Entrepreneurship (including arts and crafts);
Mr. R presents the hot shot prize to Edel Morrissey Ethnic Entrepreneurship; Business Going International; Family Run
Business Award One to Watch; Best Business Start-up. Businesses
can enter -or be entered- in more than one category.
Applicants will be shortlisted from which each Irish province will
produce seven category winners, to be announced at an awards
lunch next November. These 28 winners can look forward to local
and national media coverage, including a feature in the Irish
Independent Business section and a profile page on the Business
Achievers website
The 28 companies will then be invited to an awards ceremony in
March, where seven National (Republic & Nth Ireland) category
winners will be announced. From those, one business will be
crowned the all-Ireland Overall Business Achiever.

Ireland, more national media coverage and a state-of-the-art laptop,

Youghal Comhaltas Chairman Micheal de Buitleir says the nomina-

that Bru na Si was built and paid for within a three-year timespan.
The ongoing success of Bru na Si and our performing branch,
Ceolta Si, obviously counted too," he adds.

THE MALL BBQ An A to Z of Youghal
Wednesday, September 3, sees the publication of An A to Z of
Youghal, part of a series of new guides to Irish towns and cities.
The publisher is Youghal native Tom FitzGerald. "Youghal is an
ideal choice for this guide,"says FitzGerald. "The story of Youghal
reflects the story of Ireland - with a unique local twist in the tale.
The format of the guide aims to make these incidents accessible to
readers."
Ranging from pre-history to the Twenty-
first Century, An A to Z of Youghal looks
at the various saints and scoundrels who
have lived in the town among them
duellists, sailors, soldiers and spies as
well as pirates, rebels and witches.
Topics include the impact of the Black
David Twohig, Za and Ben McCarthy, Dennis Wallace
Death in the Fourteenth Century when
half of the town was wiped out, the story
of veteran soldier Dominic Collins who
became a Jesuit and met with the most
gruesome fate in Youghal at the begin-
ning of the Seventeenth Century and the
trial of Florence Newton from Youghal as a witch the last witch-
trial in Ireland. Youghal people who made an impact on history
include Abraham Dowdney who became a US Congressman as
Nevien Hassan, Emma Varney, Stephen
Skipping at the mall
well as another US Congressman Mike Walsh. It was Walsh who
and Emily Murphy
started the infamous Gangs of New York, when he formed the
Spartans to lend muscle to his political platform. His arch-enemy
Bill "The Butcher" Poole, wasn’t long in following suit and formed
rival gang the Bowery Boys.
Other episodes in Youghal’s history include an account of the
Knights Templar and their fortress at Rhincrew and Youghal’s part
in the legend of the Templars’ fabled treasure, the fate of the
Duncannon, a frigate that blew up in Youghal harbour for all the
wrong reasons and the infamous story of the Cork and Youghal
Railway Company one of the biggest financial scandals of the
Emily Murphy and Lucy Goggin Richard serving Champagne Nineteenth Century.
"The guide includes a range of almost fifty topics that readers can
dip in and out of," says FitzGerald. "Each item gives the back-
ground to events in Youghal, that some readers may not yet know
about."

A beloved son and devoted father
God looked around His garden, and saw an empty space,
He looked down upon the earth, and saw your tired face,
If we could have a lifetime wish, He put his arms around you, and lifted you to rest,
One dream that would come true, God s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best.
We d pray to god with all our hearts, Gold knew you were in pain, and a cure not to be,
So He closed your weary eyelids, and whispered come to me.
And precious memories too.
With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you slip away,
We never wanted memories Joe, Although we loved you dearly, we knew you could not stay.
We only wanted you. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
