Fireworks night goes off with a bang

Ellesmere Port Lions raised £5500 for local good causes at the Community
Firework Display organised at the Whitby Club last month.
Mike Bradley, Lions Fundraising
Committee Chairman thanked
the numerous organisations and
businesses who had assisted in the
preparation and execution of the event
which attracted over 4000 people.
Special Thanks was made to the
councillors whose budget financed the
fireworks, the police and fire service for
their contributions, the Sea Cadet Unit
from TS Forward who marshalled the
free Car Park kindly supplied by Whitby
High School.
Mike said “it is encouraging to be involved in an event that brings together so many
organisations and gives the people of Ellesmere Port a value for money experience in
a safe and controlled environment” We look forward to planning and organising next
years event with the Whitby Club.
Any local organisations who know of good causes looking for funding should write
to Ellesmere Port Lions Club through www.ellesmereportlions.co.uk or fireworks@

Passenger short cut is a big risk

PEOPLE are putting their lives at risk by walking across the railway tracks at
Capenhurst in an attempt to avoid a temporary diversion
British Transport Police (BTP) report a big increase in the number of people who have
taken a shortcut across the electrified line, rather than walk to the road bridge while the
repairs are carried out to the footbridge. The work is due to end this month.

Help to brighten up railway station

Ellesmere Port residents are being asked to come forward with plants and shrubs
following the theft of plants outside the town’s Railway Station.
Employees from the recycling and waste management company Veolia Environmental
Services became Friends of Ellesmere Port station and landscaped the front of the
building two weeks ago.
Central and Westminster Councillor Derek Bateman, said: “We are really pleased that
a local company wanted to give time and resources to help improve a key gateway in
Ellesmere Port. The station forecourt is now more welcoming.
“However it is appalling that thieves have stolen plants and local people are being
asked to kindly bring along any shrubs they can donate on Saturday, October 30
between 10am and 12noon to fill in the missing gaps in the planting.”
Sally Ralston, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Merseyrail, said: “We are
delighted that we have been able to build these important partnerships at Ellesmere
Port and it is a shame that others want to destroy the improvements being made.
To get involved please contact Sally Buttifant, Transport Officer, Cheshire West and
Chester Council on 01244 976788.

notch up
10 years
The Rehab Link Team has celebrated its tenth birthday, with an event at Sutton Beeches
Community Support Centre in Ellesmere Port.
Staff were joined by service users past and present, Executive Member for Adult Social Care
and Health Councillor Brenda Dowding, and Director of Adult Social Care and Health Mark
Palethorpe for the celebrations.
Formed in 2000, the joint health and social care team provide a rehabilitation service to
people following illness or significant loss of independence.
Mark Palethorpe said: “I would like to congratulate the team in completing ten successful
years. The Rehab Link Team provides an important service helping to prevent re-admission
to hospital or long-term care.
“This enthusiastic and committed team gives help and support to assist people to regain
their independence. It’s really positive to see so many past and present service users here
today to join in with the celebrations and I am sure I can speak on behalf of everyone when I
say, a big thank to the team.”
The team - made up of social workers, nurses, clinical psychologists, an occupational
therapist and a physiotherapist - plays a vital role in helping people to get back and keep
daily living skills, to enable them to live an active a life as possible.
Councillor Dowding said: “One of the most significant social care issues of today is the
increase in population of older people. Services such as rehabilitation are vital in order to
ensure we can cope with those changes.

Kathryn Kearns and Julie Durrans from the NHS join service user Steven Smith
and Director of Adult Social Care Mark Palethorpe as Stephen cuts the cake to
commemorate the Rehab Link Team’s tenth birthday.

Wartime
spirit
returns to
Little Sutton
Pupils from Little Sutton
C of E School stepped back in
time to the 1940s where they
presented a radio broadcast in
their best ‘Queen’s English’.
They put on a good show for the
audience with songs, flag waving
and a rendition of the national
anthem It was all part of the
school’s work around Remem-
brance Sunday and the Poppy
collection.
Pupils stepped into the shoes of
evacuees, billeting officers, moth-
ers, soldiers, the dad’s army and
the women’s land army to share
the experiences of these groups
during World War Two.
The school always sells the poppies of the Royal British Legion and decided this year to
boost the funds raised for the charity by designing and making their own ‘limited edition’
fabric poppies (below) to sell alongside the traditional emblem. Children heat treated
fabric circles to create petals which were layered and stitched by hand, each poppy stun-
ning and unique. The sale of these 40 limited edition poppies raised £83.60!
The older children in Silver Birch class created a business, making flowers to produce
accessories such as headbands and brooch-
es which will be on sale when they launch
their business in the summer term.
Last year’s business, ‘The Paper Jewel-
ler’, was a big success with all Year 6
pupils and their teacher earning them-
selves Green Blue Peter Badges for their
environmental achievements. They are
featured in the ‘Hall of Fame’ on the World
Land Trust website from whom they
bought an acre of rainforest to protect
with their profits.

Mayor keeps it local: The Mayor of Ellesmere Port Councillor Gareth

Anderson is arriving at functions in the town in the new mayoral car – a
locally built Astra.
He said: “My first decision on becoming Mayor was to replace the mayoral
Vauxhall Vectra with an Astra – the pride of Ellesmere Port. Its colour also
matches the town’s crest.
“I have toured the Vauxhall plant and believe that we should celebrate the
Astra’s success. I am extremely proud that the Astra is built here in Ellesmere
Port and believe it is only right and proper that an Astra should be the
mayoral car which helps me carry out my civic duties.”

Benefits cheats pay the penalty

An Ellesmere Port woman must carry out 270 hours community service after pleading
guilty to benefit fraud.
Kristin Patricia Fagan, 30, previously of 20 Milton Close, Ellesmere Port, appeared
at Chester Magistrates Court, where she pleaded guilty to one offence of dishonestly
making a false representation in order to claim housing benefit.
Miss Fagan failed to declare that her landlord was the father of her child, resulting in
overpaid benefit totalling £18,472.77, a substantial loss to public funds.
Miss Fagan is also required to fully repay the overpaid benefit to Cheshire West and
Chester Council.
Also at Chester Magistrates’ Court, Ian Smethurst, 29, previously of Flat 2, 8
Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on
Thursday 11 November, where he was convicted of falsely claiming more than £3,000
in benefits. He was fined £150, ordered to pay £100 towards prosecution costs and is
required to fully repay the overpaid benefit to Cheshire West and Chester Council and
the Department for Work and Pensions.

Corks are popping at Pryors Hayes Golf Club. The 18 hole parkland club has won
the prestigious Club Mirror ‘Golf Club of the year Award’ for 2010.
Following on from last year’s second place award in the same event the club went one
better in 2010 winning the top UK Golf Club accolade. Pryors Hayes won against stiff
competition from the cream of the UK golf clubs.
This year’s annual award ceremony was held in November at the Palace Hotel
Manchester where, during a sparkling occasion the awards were presented by TV sports
personality Steve Rider. Pryors Hayes proprietor Martin Redrup was delighted to receive
the winners’ commemorative plate which he says will occupy pride of place in the club
house.
Martin continued “Being chosen as runner up in 2009 was an absolute honour, to win the
top award for 2010 is just fantastic.
“The award justifies all the hard work undertaken by the whole team”
