Course Description:
This course introduces the students to the historical literature on the late Ottoman Empire. Each week we
focus on a topic and examine the available literature from a critical perspective. The course aims to help
students develop a basic knowledge of the nineteenth-century Ottoman history. It aims to situate the late
Ottoman history within the context of long term nineteenth-century world history. We pay due attention to
theoretical discussions and examine the topics from a comparative and historiographical perspective.
Format:
We meet once a week for three hours. Twelve sessions will be used to discuss common readings for each
week. One session will be devoted to paper presentations.
