The Chords and Lines question below is part of the old A-Level syllabus, but it is useful for

developing your analysis and composition skills.

Use the extract below to answer the following questions, this will help you develop your
approach to analysing music, which is an important skill to have for A-Level music.

Understanding chords and lines. 


1. What key is the extract in (tonic)? 
2. How do you know that? (give at least 3 reasons) 
3. Write out the triad chords for the scale of this key in root, first and second inversion
e.g.

4. Label each chord of the scale using roman numerals and letters for inversions

e.g. Ia, Ib, Ic

5. What are the related keys of the key this piece is in (relative minor, tonic minor,
subdominant, dominant)?
5. Describe how these keys relate to the tonic, (use the roman numerals to help you and
describe the key signature for each of the related keys)
6. Give the meaning of the following non-essential harmony notes/dissonances  
An anticipation   
An appoggiatura – this probably isn’t what you think it is research it.
A passing note 
A suspension  
 
 
 Once you have done this research use it to answer the questions below.
