STEM Classes

- number of females (106/1334 =7.9% ) students vs. males (95
/1506=6.3%) in AP science and math classes
- AP Physics - 24 F out of 71 total students - 1/3 females only - why?

- Look at national data, state data, county data, and district data
- Percentage of practitioners in the STEM majors
- Share data with staff members during meetings
- Availability of classes
- Students are not encouraged to take those classes

What are the Risks?


- Tension between teachers and counselors
- Barriers to access STEM courses
What fears do you have?
- Students will not do well in those classes
- “ girls dont want to be in these classes/ dont sign up for them”
What can we do about those fears?
- 60 females not enrolled in AP or honors Science and Math
have a GPA of 3.0 or better (they’re capable!)
-survey students and gauge interest and awareness of
options
Knowledge
- Professional Development for staff on gender inequities
in STEM so that entire team has same outlook/mentality
- Inform parents, stakeholders, and staff of new school
initiatives towards equitable access to STEM activities
creating scheduled times to bring community to learn
about these initiatives so they are in the loop
- Identify dates in the school calendar where we can bring
women in STEM fields from the community so they can
share advocacy for this initiative
- Target:
- 10% increase in juniors and seniors STEM class enrollment
Ability
- Create clubs for women in the STEM majors
- Involve women mentors from the community
- Invite guest speakers who are in the field
- Provide support for students in STEM classes
- Additional tutoring
- Taskforce
- Team responsible for making sure STEM enrollment is equitable
