Abstract Depression is a common mental disorder in the world, but remains a
contributing factor to the derivation other diseases’ recovery time. The prevalence of major depressive disorder is one of the highest which it has continued to increase over the past ten years. There are several factors that contribute to decrease depression are widely done. One study in the United States showed that individuals who were depressed or had depressed symptoms tend to have low levels of mindfulness. It was evidenced by the opposite neural activity in depressed individuals and individuals with high level of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability of one to be aware and notice what are happening at that time. One who has dispositional ability to mindful can accept any experiences that occur receptively and openly, making it less likely for individuals to do the ruminations. People with high mindfulness ability tend to have low levels of depression. On the contrary, people with high level of depression are known to have low levels of mindfulness. There were few publications that discussed adolescent depression comprehensively, though some studies had found that the onset of depression began since the beginning period of life. It is notable to know the relationship between mindfulness and depression in adolescents of Indonesia since it can be used as preliminary data for further research and guidance for mindfulness therapy in alleviating depression in adolescents of Indonesia. This research used quantitative method and correlational design. Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and a depression questionnaire, BDI, were distributed to 200 adolescents. From the result of the analysis using Spearman correlation, it was known that there was a negative and significant relationship between mindfulness and depression, particularly in the dimensions of acting with awareness and non judging of inner experience. These result indicated that the higher the mindfulness score on the dimensions of acting with awareness and non judging of inner experience, the lower the depression score that adolescents have.
Discussion This study aims to measure the level of depression in adolescents.
Depression is a mental disorder that is common in the world (World Health Organization, 2015). Although common, depression remains a contributing factor in decreasing the speed of healing of various other diseases. As many as 800,000 suicides have been reported each year with depression as the main cause (WHO, 2015). The prevalence of major depressive disorder is one of the highest and the number has continued to increase over the past ten years (Richards, 2011). In Indonesia, depression is categorized as a mental-emotional disorder and its prevalence is as high as 6% of the total population (Riskesdas, 2013). The effects of depression vary and some depend on the mediator. One of the juvenile delinquents is reported to have a correlation as a result of depression, and the degree varies depending on the extrovert-introvert personality of the individual (Ibaniati, 2005). Drug use is also proven as a result of depression and because of the greater prevalence in men, depression and comorbidities are influenced by gender differences (Costello et al, 2003; Franko et al, 2005). In Indonesia alone, it is not clear that drug use is a direct consequence of depression in adolescents, previous news shows that 90% of drug users in Indonesia are late teens (Kompas, 2001). Overall, susceptible behavioral disorders occur as a consequence of depression in adolescents (Abela & Hankin, 2008). And those who have high mindfulness ability tend to have low levels of depression, whereas individuals with high levels of depression are known to have low levels of mindfulness (Heath, Carsley, De Riggi, Mills, & Mettler, 2016). Thus, researchers see further research needs to be done about the relationship between mindfulness and depression in adolescents in Indonesia, so that more information about the relationship between these two variables in adolescents in Indonesia. Conclusion Based on the results of the discussion above, it is known that there is a relationship between mindfulness and depression. These results are expected to be the basis of further research, in knowing the extent of the influence of the Journal of Psychogenesis techniques, carried out on reducing depression in adolescents. And is also expected to be able to sensitize the Indonesian community specifically to pay more attention to their teenagers to avoid depression.
