Attempt All questions IS 456-2000 is permitted Assume any other data Suitably Max Marks: 50 1. a. A rectangular beam of overall cross sectional dimension 230mm x 600mm with 50 mm effective cover is reinforced with 5 numbers of 25 mm diameter bars in the tension side and 3 numbers of 16 mm dia bars on the compression side. It is carrying an imposed load of 50 kN/m over an effective span of 7 m. check the adequacy of the design. The permissible stress in concrete and steel are 7 N/mm2 and 230 N/mm2 respectively. m = 15.Compressive stress in steel bar is 1.5 times compressive stress in surrounding concrete. Use WSM b. Explain the various Design Philosophies? Also comment on the suitability of steel as a reinforcement material? 2. a. A RC beam of overall dimensions 300 x 500 mm rests on a brick wall 300mm thick clear span is 5 m. The beams are spaced at 3.5 m intervals.Thickness of slab supported by the beam is 120mm, Live load on the slab is 200 kg/m2. Floor finish weight 60 kg/m2. Concrete adopted is M20 and mild steel is used for reinforcements. Effective cover to the reinforcement is 50 mm. Design the reinforcements required for flexure and shear. Draw a net longitudinal section of the beam and indicate the placements of reinforcements. Use LSM b. Design a beam for a bending moment of 200 kN-m, shear force of 120 kN and twisting moment of 48 kN-m. Use M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Take b = 400 mm. Use LSM 3. a. Design a simply supported slab to cover a room with internal dimension 4.0 m x 5 m and 230 mm thick brick walls all around. Assume a live load of 3kN/m2 and a finish load of 1 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Assume the slab corners are prevented from lifting up. Use LSM b. Design a short circular column 6 m long to carry an axial load of 250 kN, if both ends of the column are fully restrained. Use helical reinforcement. Use LSM 4. A roof beam slab system of a hall of 6 m width and 12 m length is to be supported on only the 4 corner columns and two 6 m long end walls. The 110 mm thick roof slab is monolithically constructed with two main beams of 12 m span each, and two interior secondary beams of 6 m span each dividing the slab into 3 equal panels of 4 m shorter span each. The 20mm thick ceiling plaster of the slab is of density 20 kN/3 and the roof finishes on the slab weigh 1.5 kN/m2. The slab has to sustain a live load of 2kN/m2. Design a secondary beam in M15 grade concrete with Fe415 grade tensile steel reinforcements using WSM. Limit the overall depth depth of this beam to 400 mm and design it as a T- beam. 5. Design a staircase slab in figure below. The stairs are simply supported on beams provided at the first riser and at the edge of the upper landing. Assume a finish load of 0.8 kN/m2 and a live load of 5.0 kNm/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
