DATA WAREHOUSE ASSIGNMENT

Question:
Assume you are in the insurance business. Find two examples of type 2 slowly changing
dimensions in that business. As an analyst on the project, write the specifications for
applying the type 2 changes to the data warehouse with regard to the two examples.

Answer:
Two examples of changing dimensions in the insurance business are customer Geographic
location and product. When applying type 2 changes there should be a way to separate a
customers’ insurance policy period from their geographic location. For example, a customer
has an insurance policy for the period of Jan – Aug while at the restaurant address of M.G
Road, Bangalore during this policy period the customer reports that the restaurant address
has been changed to Hyderabad. Due to the change of the customers restaurant address
there should be a way in the data warehouse to separate any incidents that took place while
the address was in Bangalore and incidents that took place in Hyderabad. We should avoid
updating the new location in the policy to past incident that have an occurred at a different
location. Therefore, if a claim took place while at the Bangalore address, we should be able
to see that the claim was filed while at that address instead of updating the policy to a new
address and that address is changed everywhere in the data warehouse.
In the same way, if a customer changes their location the features for the policy in different
geographic location changes therefore what a customer in Bangalore may be eligible for a
customer in Hyderabad will not be eligible for. In this case, we want to be able to separate
within the same policy what benefits the customer received while having a Bangalore
address and what benefits there are now receiving while at the Hyderabad address.
